In the heart of Manhattan's vibrant Chinatown, Happy Star stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of traditional Cantonese-style bakeries and quick-service eateries. Located on the bustling corridor of East Broadway, this local establishment has become a neighborhood staple for those seeking authentic flavors without the high price tags often found in modern New York City dining. Happy Star bridges the gap between a traditional bakery and a casual cafe, offering a warm atmosphere where the aroma of fresh bread and simmering congee greets every visitor. Whether you are a local resident grabbing a quick breakfast or a visitor exploring the rich culinary landscape of Lower Manhattan, Happy Star provides a genuine glimpse into the daily food culture of the community.
The essence of Happy Star lies in its commitment to value and tradition. The bakery side of the business showcases a variety of classic Chinese pastries, while the kitchen side focuses on savory staples that have fed generations. It is a place where the pace is fast, the food is hot, and the experience is undeniably New York. For those looking to support local businesses while enjoying high-quality, soul-warming food, Happy Star offers a reliable and delicious destination that captures the spirit of the East Broadway neighborhood.

What is worth choosing
If you are visiting Happy Star for the first time, there are several standout items that come highly recommended by the local community. The absolute "star of the show" is the Pork and Egg Congee. This dish is celebrated for its perfect consistency and nostalgic flavor, often compared to traditional family recipes. At a price point of approximately $2.50, it is arguably one of the best food values in all of Manhattan. It is particularly popular during the colder months or as a soothing meal for those feeling under the weather.
For those interested in the dim sum offerings, the Shumai and the Rice Rolls with Fresh Shrimp are essential picks. The shumai are known for being packed with meat, offering a satisfying and savory bite. Meanwhile, the shrimp rice rolls are praised for their incredibly soft texture and fresh shrimp filling, making them a delicate yet flavorful addition to any order. On the bakery side, the cocktail buns (Gai Mei Bao) are a classic choice, especially when purchased fresh in the morning. These buns provide a sweet contrast to the savory kitchen items. When visiting, it is highly recommended to arrive early to ensure the widest selection of fresh baked goods, as popular items can sell out quickly given the bakery's popularity with the local New York crowd.
While the majority of experiences at Happy Star are defined by delicious food and incredible savings, it is always important for customers to remain observant. Like many high-volume, traditional establishments, the focus is primarily on the speed of service and the affordability of the product. This creates an environment that is quintessentially New York—energetic, straightforward, and deeply rooted in the local community's needs. For a total of around $10.00, one can enjoy a three-item feast that rivals much more expensive establishments in terms of flavor and satisfaction, making Happy Star a true hidden gem on East Broadway.

I'm giving this place a five star for the egg tart! I've been a egg tart fan for years and would drive drive up and down to Eastern coast for good egg tarts. For the tart to be a quality equivalent to Asia, I'm looking for the right consistency of the custard and flaky crispy shell. Harpo on Grand Street is good but crust not flaky. This is definitely my go-to spot for cup of tea and egg tart. Birthday fruit cake and pastries are awesome and not too sweet at all. I would not fault the rude attitude or customer service which is pretty normal depending on the cultural background. I won't fault the food in here because of service.

very nice and chewy bread with a delicate texture that i thoroughly enjoyed. not the best filling around but it is well seasoned and the filling was adequate for the amount of bread. can't wait to come back! it has an A grade and the lady working the front was super nice

Good and cheap bakery on East Broadway. There are a lot of cheap and delicious places on this street that not a lot of tourist know about. What I like about this place is that they have unique sweets that I haven't seen in other Chinese bakeries. This is the first time I've seen a sesame swiss roll. The sesame taste wasn't strong, but you can still taste it and the texture is there. It's not too sweet and really fluffy. They also have meat and rice dishes already packaged for $3.50.
