Kossar's Bagels & Bialys

367 Grand St, New York, NY 10002, USA

4.0
This was my first time to eat here and immediately I noticed the window into to prep area where you can see the bagels being handmade on site. That's as fresh as it gets. They have a full selection of bagels and cream cheeses, as well as an all day breakfast menu and classic sandwiches, too. Fresh baked pastries and cookies, yogurt, juice, coffee ... I had the bacon egg & cheese on a plain toasted bagel with a large coffee. They have some seating inside and I had my choice of where to sit, but it was slow and not that many people there. If it's busy and people don't take their orders to go, you might not find a seat. There are a few (3, I think) 2-top tables & two seats at a bar at the window. The staff is friendly. I'm glad I went and I would definitely go again. 10/10 recommend - Rebecca Meador

Kossar's Bagels & Bialys Introduce

For any true New Yorker, the Lower East Side is the spiritual home of the city's most iconic breakfast staple. Standing as a monument to this rich culinary history is Kossar's Bagels & Bialys. For decades, this establishment has been a cornerstone of the neighborhood, serving up the kind of authentic, chewy, and perfectly crusty dough that defines the New York experience. While many shops have come and gone, Kossar's remains a mandatory stop for anyone seeking a taste of old-school Manhattan mixed with the vibrant energy of the modern-day city. It is a place where tradition is baked into every batch, and the smell of fresh yeast and toasted seeds provides a warm welcome to everyone walking down Grand Street.

The experience at Kossar's Bagels & Bialys is as much about the atmosphere as it is about the food. Upon entering the shop, visitors are immediately greeted by a large window looking directly into the preparation area. This "open-kitchen" style allows you to see the bagels being handmade on-site, ensuring that what you are about to eat is as fresh as it gets. The sight of trays piled high with steaming bialys and bagels straight from the oven is a quintessential New York moment. Whether you are a local picking up a dozen for a Sunday brunch or a visitor looking to cross a legendary bakery off your bucket list, the shop offers a friendly, professional environment that honors its historical roots while providing the fast-paced service today’s New Yorkers expect.

Location and Accessibility

Kossar's Bagels & Bialys is located at 367 Grand St, New York, NY 10002, USA. This prime location puts it in the heart of the Lower East Side, a neighborhood famous for its grit, glamour, and world-class food scene. It is situated near the intersection of Grand and Essex Streets, making it an easy destination to find for those exploring the area's many boutiques and museums. The shop is a short walk from the Essex St Station (J, M, Z trains) and the Delancey St-Essex St Station (F train), providing excellent connectivity to the rest of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.

For those who prefer a scenic walk, the shop is easily accessible from the East Village or Chinatown. While the shop does have some limited seating for those who want to dine in, it is a popular spot for "to-go" orders. If you are planning to sit down, keep in mind that the space is cozy; it features a few 2-top tables and a small window bar with two seats. During slow periods, it is a peaceful place to enjoy a coffee and watch the neighborhood wake up, but during the morning rush, the limited seating fills up quickly, highlighting its status as a bustling community hub.

What is Worth Choosing

If it is your first time at Kossar's, you absolutely must try a bialy. While bagels are famous, the bialy is the true soul of this shop. A bialy is distinct because it is baked rather than boiled, and instead of a hole in the middle, it has a depressed center filled with savory onions or garlic. It is a lighter alternative to the bagel that pairs perfectly with a simple layer of butter or cream cheese. For those who prefer a traditional New York staple, the "Bacon, Egg & Cheese" on a plain or everything bagel is a top-tier choice. It is quintessential comfort food that hits the spot during a busy Manhattan morning, especially when paired with a large, hot coffee.

For those who love fish, the everything bagel with lox cream cheese is a popular pick. The lox cream cheese is known for its tasty, rich flavor and generous application. However, if you are looking for that specific punch of garlic and onion, keep in mind that the seasoning on the everything bagels can vary by batch, so feel free to ask the friendly staff which bins came out of the oven most recently. If you are looking for something sweet to follow your savory sandwich, don't overlook their fresh cookies and pastries. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite at the window bar or taking a dozen bialys home to share, Kossar's Bagels & Bialys offers a 10/10 experience that remains a highlight of the Lower East Side.
