The story of this bakery is deeply intertwined with the local history of the Bronx. It represents a time when local businesses were the lifeblood of the street, and food was prepared with a level of care that prioritized flavor and texture over mass production. As a staple of the New York region, this bakery has stood the test of time, providing the foundational element of many family dinners: a perfectly baked loaf of Italian bread. What is worth choosing
When you step into this Unionport Road establishment, the primary choice is clear: the classic Italian bread. This is the product that built the bakery's reputation and has kept it thriving in a competitive New York market. Unlike the plastic-wrapped loaves found in supermarkets, the bread here possesses a soul. It is worth choosing the standard long loaf, which features the signature golden-brown crust that local New Yorkers look for. The texture is designed to be sturdy enough for a hearty hero sandwich but delicate enough to serve alongside a fine meal. Many locals have fond memories of "sneaking" a piece of the warm bread on the walk home, a testament to its irresistible quality.
Beyond the bread itself, what is worth choosing is the experience of the bakery's history. For many, a visit here is a nostalgic journey. Long-time residents and former students from St. Dominic's often recall the days of running into the shop for a fresh snack. The bakery represents a specific era of New York City life where the relationship between the baker and the customer was personal. Choosing to shop here is a way to support the legacy of artisanal baking and to enjoy a product that has been perfected over decades. Even as rumors of the shop's closing circulate among the heartbroken community, the quality of the bread remains unchanged, making every loaf a precious piece of the Bronx's culinary identity.
If you are a connoisseur of authentic NYC carbohydrates, the rolls and smaller bread items are also highly recommended. They offer the same high-quality dough and bake as the larger loaves but in a more portable format. Whether you are looking for the perfect base for a breakfast sandwich or a side for your dinner, the options at 1723 Unionport Rd provide a level of satisfaction that only a true local Italian bakery can deliver. Do not miss the opportunity to taste what many consider a "gem" of the borough while the ovens are still warm.

Italian bread Reviews

I love this store and am sad to hear they are closing at the end of the year. When I was a student at St. Dominic's school they would walk the classes over to mass, we would run into the bakery to by bread with the nuns yelling at us. Lol I asked if there was anything I could do to help save this little gem of an Italian bread store and was told "no". I am heartbroken!
