Joey Bats Natas Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the bustling culinary landscape of New York City, few treats offer the perfect balance of crispy texture and creamy indulgence quite like the Pastel de Nata. Joey Bats Natas has established itself as a premier destination for those seeking an authentic taste of Portugal right here in Manhattan. Nestled within the iconic atmosphere of Chelsea Market, this bakery focuses on the traditional Portuguese egg tart, a pastry characterized by its blistered, caramelized top and a delicate, flaky crust that shatters with every bite. Whether you are a lifelong fan of European pastries or a curious foodie exploring the city's diverse dessert scene, Joey Bats Natas provides a specialized experience that brings a piece of Lisbon’s rich baking heritage to the streets of New York.
The bakery has gained a reputation for consistency and quality, catering to a local crowd that appreciates artisanal craftsmanship. By focusing on a niche product—the Pastel de Nata—the team at Joey Bats has mastered the intricate process of creating layers of puff pastry that remain light and airy while supporting a rich, egg-based custard filling. In a city where dessert trends come and go, this establishment relies on time-tested recipes and high-quality ingredients to maintain its status as a local favorite for a sweet pick-me-point or a shared treat among friends.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Joey Bats Natas, the most essential item to try is the Original Pastel de Nata. This traditional version allows you to appreciate the pure quality of the custard and the craftsmanship of the puff pastry without any distractions. It is the gold standard for Portuguese baking and serves as the baseline for everything else the bakery produces. The custard is exceptionally smooth and rich, making it a standout choice for those who appreciate high-end confectionery.
If you are looking to branch out, the chocolate-infused tart comes highly recommended by frequent visitors and food enthusiasts alike. It adds a layer of depth to the sweetness that pairs perfectly with the buttery crust. For those who prefer a tart and fruity contrast, the raspberry and blueberry options are reliable favorites that provide a burst of freshness. However, a popular local tip for those buying a variety pack is to handle the packaging with care, as the delicate toppings and light pastry tops can be sensitive during transit through the busy streets of Manhattan. Despite the premium pricing typical of artisanal New York bakeries, the sheer quality and texture of these tarts make them a worthwhile indulgence for any dessert lover in the city.
Whether you are grabbing a single tart to enjoy while walking the High Line or bringing a dozen back to the office, Joey Bats Natas offers a specialized culinary experience that remains a highlight of the Chelsea food scene. Its commitment to the authentic Portuguese style ensures that every visitor gets a true taste of European tradition right in the heart of the United States.

Went here as part of a food crawl at the Chelsea Market. This was our dessert and it was very good overall. The pastries were light, flaky and incredibly sweet. If I recall correctly we got chocolate, original, blueberry, and passionfruit. My favorite was definitely the chocolate and the passion fruit was not good in my opinion; the rasberry and original were both good bit not my top pick. I wished they had better packaging because the pastry topings can mix if you arent careful with your pastries but otjerwise a great experience.

First time tried this Portuguese egg tart, I was pleasantly surprised. It was extremely rich and smooth in texture, with a delicious flavor. The only drawback was that it was too expensive and too small. 😆

Found this place on Chelsea Market. This dessert was so damn good, I went for seconds. I tried the traditional and blueberry one. It tastes like creme brulee but much more softer and gooey. It is warmed up before serving and it was absolute favourite spot in the market.

This was my first time visiting Chelsea Market, and there are so many amazing spots to explore and eat there. I stumbled upon Joey Bats Café and I’m officially obsessed. Their Pastéis de Nata (Portuguese custard tarts) are incredible. I tried the blueberry and the chocolate, and both were perfectly crisp with a rich, creamy filling. The café can be a little tricky to find because the market gets so crowded and there are so many other shops, and I didn’t notice any seating when I was there. But the cashier was friendly and helped me choose what to try. I recommend going earlier in the day because some flavors can sell out fast.
