Fat Witch Bakery Introduce
Nestled within the iconic, industrial corridors of Chelsea Market, Fat Witch Bakery has become a staple of the New York City dessert scene. Known primarily for its specialization in brownies and "witches" (their signature small-batch baked squares), this bakery has carved out a niche that appeals to both local New Yorkers looking for a consistent treat and visitors exploring the High Line. Since its inception, the bakery has focused on the concept of the "dense, fudgy brownie," moving away from cake-like textures to provide a rich, indulgent experience that fits perfectly into the fast-paced, high-quality culinary landscape of Manhattan.
For residents of Chelsea and the surrounding Meatpacking District, Fat Witch Bakery is more than just a tourist stop; it is a recognizable brand that represents the creative spirit of New York's artisanal food movement. The atmosphere within the shop is whimsical yet professional, often bustling with the energy characteristic of 9th Avenue. While the city offers countless dessert options, this establishment has maintained its relevance by leaning into a specific specialty and perfecting a branding aesthetic that is as memorable as the treats themselves. It serves as a go-to spot for gift-giving, afternoon pick-me-ups, and sampling unique flavor profiles that deviate from the standard chocolate fare.
Location and Accessibility
Fat Witch Bakery is located at 75 9th Ave, New York, NY 10011, USA, situated inside the world-famous Chelsea Market. This location places it in one of the most vibrant and accessible parts of the city. The market itself occupies an entire city block, and the bakery is positioned to benefit from the high foot traffic of both the 9th Avenue entrance and the connection to the High Line elevated park. For locals, this means the bakery is a convenient detour during a weekend walk or a lunch break for those working in the nearby tech and fashion hubs of Chelsea.
Accessibility via public transportation is excellent. The bakery is just a short walk from the 14th Street / 8th Avenue subway station, which serves the A, C, E, and L lines. Additionally, the 1, 2, and 3 trains at the nearby 7th Avenue station provide easy access for those coming from uptown or downtown. For those using the city's bus system, the M11 and M14 lines run frequently in the immediate vicinity. Because the bakery is located within Chelsea Market, the facility is ADA-compliant, offering flat surfaces and wide corridors that make it accessible for strollers and wheelchairs, a significant advantage in a city where older storefronts can often be challenging to navigate.
Services Offered
Fat Witch Bakery focuses on a streamlined service model that emphasizes quality and convenience. They have mastered the art of the "grab-and-go" dessert, which is essential for the busy New York lifestyle. Their primary services include:
- In-store retail sales: Customers can browse a wide array of brownies and blondies, many of which are displayed to highlight their unique textures and ingredients.
- Individual packaging: Each brownie is individually wrapped, ensuring freshness and making them incredibly easy to transport throughout the city without the need for immediate refrigeration.
- Gifting and custom bundles: The bakery specializes in curated tins and gift boxes, making it a popular choice for corporate gifts, birthdays, and holiday presents.
- Flavor variety: Unlike traditional bakeries that may only offer one or two brownie types, Fat Witch provides an extensive menu of diverse and often seasonally rotating flavors.
- Bulk orders: They accommodate larger requests for events and parties, providing a scalable dessert option that maintains a handcrafted feel.
Features / Highlights
The bakery is defined by several key features that contribute to its reputation as a must-visit destination in the Chelsea area. These highlights include:
- Signature Fudgy Texture: The bakery is famous for its dense, moist brownies that prioritize a rich cocoa experience over a light, airy crumb.
- Unique and Global Flavors: Moving beyond simple chocolate, the menu features innovative options such as black sesame, yuzu, matcha, and red velvet, catering to the diverse and sophisticated palates of New Yorkers.
- Aesthetic Branding: The "witch" theme and the charming, illustrated packaging make the products instantly recognizable and highly "Instagrammable," a major draw in the modern New York food scene.
- Bite-Sized Portions: Many of their offerings are sized perfectly for a quick indulgence, allowing customers to try multiple flavors without the commitment of a full-sized cake or pie.
- Central Chelsea Market Presence: Being part of the Chelsea Market community means the bakery is surrounded by other world-class food vendors, creating a holistic culinary destination.
- Consistent Quality: The bakery maintains a high standard of production, ensuring that the brownie you buy today tastes exactly like the one you enjoyed years ago.

What is Worth Choosing
When standing before the display at Fat Witch Bakery, the "Snow Brownie" is frequently cited by regulars and food critics alike as a top-tier choice. This white chocolate-based treat offers a creamy, sweet alternative to the traditional dark chocolate brownie and is highly recommended for its smooth consistency and delicious flavor profile. It stands out as a "must-try" for anyone looking to experience the bakery's range beyond their namesake dark chocolate witches.
For those who enjoy more adventurous or international flavors, the matcha and black sesame brownies are worth choosing. These flavors reflect the global influences of New York City and provide a less traditional, more nuanced dessert experience. If you are a fan of aesthetics and individual portions, the bite-sized brownies are perfect for sampling. While some patrons note that the price point of approximately $3.75 per piece reflects the premium location and the brand's boutique nature, the individual packaging makes them an excellent value for those who need a portable, high-quality treat. Whether you are looking for a classic fudgy brownie or a unique yuzu-infused blondie, Fat Witch Bakery offers a curated selection that captures a specific, sweet slice of Manhattan life. It is an ideal stop for a small, high-quality indulgence that stays true to its identity as a specialist in all things brownie.

Absolutely delicious! I tried a variety, the best by far was the Snow Brownie, would highly recommend. The reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5 is because the prices are very high for the size of brownie that you receive.

The brownies are bite-size and individually packed. There’s plenty of unique flavors to choose from: black sesame, yuzu, matcha, white chocolate, red velvet, etc. Each piece cost around $3.75, which in my opinion is a little bit expensive as the brownies did not amaze me in a spectacular way. The flavors are decent, but it’s really on the ordinary side. You’ll be paying for the aesthetics, not the flavors.

Fat Witch Bakery/White Chocolate Brownie: On a positive note, the packaging has an artistic nature and it definitely caught my eye. But it’s kind of strange for a bakery to have a Halloween theme all year round. For a brownie that was the size of an Oreo, I could have lived without it.

The packaging is cute and they ship quickly. A friend keeps buying these for me bc *they* like them; I wish there was a polite way to say, “no thanks, I’m good!” They taste like a Little Debbie Cosmic Brownie that’s been un-cosmic’ed. They’re almost flavorless except for the odd flavor that permeates them, and the texture isn’t like a traditional brownie-it’s more crumbly. It just falls apart in pieces when I try to eat one. I gave the brownie-loving hubby one to see if I was judging too harshly and he took one bite and wanted no more. His review was, “(((bleagh)))”. He also said they tasted kind of like the un-cosmic brownie. Even the brownie lover was unimpressed. If y’all like ‘em, though, enjoy!

We got three small brownies: citrus had a great flavour, and Macha one had a full matcha flavour which I loved (considering some bakeries have just a hint of macha flavour). Unfortunately, their texture was not fudge or brownie-ish. It is more like a dense cakey texture. I wasn't much fan of a ginger one even though I usually love ginger flavour. Great place to visit and explore, but don't hold your expectations high up there.
