Moon Man

75 9th Ave Suite Merch 3, New York, NY 10011, USA

Was so excited about them opening a permanent location inside Chelsea market but sadly the treats didn’t hit. I’m always on the search for a good pandan dessert to relive my childhood in Singapore but most of them just have the green color with no real flavor. I’m not sure if they use extract or leaves here but the pandan tiramisu barely tasted like it at all, and even more frustrating was that it contained 80% cream and almost no sponge/lady fingers at all. I ordered tiramisu not whipped cream. Also tried the cassava cake duo which had both Kaya (pandan) and ube jam drizzled on top. The cake itself had a good texture, albeit a bit greasy (ate it a couple hours later and saw it had soaked thru the bottom of the wax paper. But again the kaya and ube didn’t taste like much of anything at all. At these astronomical prices I can’t recommend it. - Karen s

Moon Man Introduce

In the ever-evolving culinary landscape of Manhattan, few places offer a more vibrant and aromatic escape than Moon Man. Located within the world-renowned Chelsea Market, Moon Man has transitioned from a beloved pop-up sensation at the Queens Night Market to a permanent fixture in the New York dessert scene. Specializing in Southeast Asian-inspired sweets, this bakery brings the complex and nostalgic flavors of Indonesia, Singapore, and the wider region to a modern urban audience. For New Yorkers looking to venture beyond the standard cupcake or cookie, Moon Man provides an adventurous palette of ingredients including pandan, coconut, ube, and cassava. It is a destination that celebrates the intersection of tradition and innovation, offering treats that are as visually striking as they are fragrant.

The journey of Moon Man is a testament to the power of authentic flavor in a global city. By focusing on street-food-inspired desserts that are often hard to find in a professional bakery setting in Manhattan, they have captured the curiosity of foodies and the hearts of those longing for a taste of home. The atmosphere at their Chelsea Market stall is one of discovery; the scents of toasted coconut and floral pandan leaves often draw in passersby before they even see the menu. While the transition to a permanent location in such a high-traffic area brings new challenges, Moon Man remains a vital representative of Southeast Asian culinary arts, providing a unique sweet experience that reflects the diverse cultural fabric of New York City.

Location and Accessibility are key components of the Moon Man experience. You can find them at 75 9th Ave, Suite Merch 3, New York, NY 10011, USA, situated inside the iconic Chelsea Market. This location is one of the most accessible and popular food destinations in the city, making it a perfect stop for locals and visitors alike. Nestled between the Meatpacking District and Chelsea, the market is a short walk from the 14th Street subway station, which serves the A, C, E, and L lines. Additionally, it is just steps away from the High Line, allowing for a seamless afternoon of sightseeing and snacking. The interior stall is designed for efficiency and visual appeal, fitting perfectly into the industrial-chic aesthetic of the market while maintaining its own distinct cultural identity.

The services offered at Moon Man focus on providing high-quality, specialized desserts that highlight traditional Southeast Asian ingredients. The staff is known for their passion for these unique flavors, often explaining the origins of ingredients like Kaya or Ube to curious newcomers. Their services include:

  • On-site preparation of signature Southeast Asian-inspired desserts and pastries.
  • Crafting of creative fusion items, such as their popular Pandan-infused Tiramisu.
  • Retail sales of traditional jams and spreads, including their famous Kaya (coconut and egg jam).
  • A rotation of snacks featuring tropical tubers like cassava and ube.
  • Quick-service counter experience designed for the fast-paced environment of Chelsea Market.
  • Take-out packaging that allows customers to enjoy their treats while exploring the High Line or nearby Chelsea piers.
  • Occasional seasonal specials that introduce New Yorkers to specific regional holiday flavors.

The features and highlights of Moon Man distinguish it from the countless other dessert vendors in Manhattan. Its focus on a very specific niche of Southeast Asian sweets allows it to provide an experience that is both educational and indulgent. Key highlights include:

  • Authentic Ingredient Profiles: The use of real pandan, ube, and coconut milk ensures a fragrant and aromatic experience that mimics the street stalls of Southeast Asia.
  • Creative Fusion: Moon Man is widely recognized for taking Western dessert formats, like Tiramisu, and reimagining them with Eastern ingredients.
  • From Pop-up to Permanent: The bakery carries the "soul" of the Queens Night Market, bringing a grassroots, community-loved brand to a world-class retail environment.
  • Texture-Forward Treats: Items like the Cassava Cake are celebrated for their unique, chewy, and satisfying textures that differ significantly from airy European pastries.
  • Vibrant Visuals: The natural greens of pandan and deep purples of ube make these desserts some of the most photogenic in Chelsea Market.
  • High-Quality Jams: Their Kaya jam is a standout highlight, praised for its perfect balance of sweetness and coconut fragrance.

When it comes to determining what is worth choosing at Moon Man, there are several items that have garnered significant attention from the local community. For many, the Pandan Tiramisu is a must-try; it is a rich and creamy twist on the classic Italian dessert, balanced by the floral sweetness of pandan and kaya. It is an excellent choice for those who enjoy cream-heavy, decadent desserts with a fragrant aftertaste. If you are a fan of traditional textures, the Cassava Cake Duo is highly recommended. This cake is known for its dense, slightly chewy consistency and is often topped with a drizzle of Kaya or ube jam to enhance the flavor profile. While the texture is rich and sometimes carries a hint of greasiness traditional to cassava preparations, it remains a favorite for those seeking an authentic Indonesian-style snack.

For longtime fans of the brand, the Kaya Jam Coconut Pancakes remain a sentimental and delicious choice, especially for those who first discovered Moon Man in Queens. These pancakes highlight the bakery’s ability to master the "sweet-salty-fragrant" trifecta that defines Southeast Asian street food. It is worth noting that because Moon Man uses authentic, often imported ingredients and operates in a premier Manhattan location, prices are on the higher end for dessert items. However, for many New Yorkers, the opportunity to enjoy a well-executed ube or pandan treat in the heart of Chelsea is a luxury worth the cost. Whether you are reliving childhood memories of Singapore or exploring these flavors for the first time, Moon Man provides a high-quality gateway into the world of Southeast Asian sweets.

In summary, Moon Man at Chelsea Market is a bold and flavorful addition to the New York City bakery scene. By refusing to compromise on the distinct ingredients that define Southeast Asian desserts, they have created a destination that is both nostalgic and excitingly new. The combination of its strategic location at 75 9th Ave and its commitment to unique flavor profiles makes it a vital stop for any dessert lover in Manhattan. While the experience is modern and polished, the heart of Moon Man remains rooted in the vibrant street markets that inspired it, providing a sweet and fragrant "Ray of Light" in the middle of Chelsea.
