L’Appartement 4F Introduce
For New Yorkers, the quest for the perfect croissant is a never-ending journey through the city's diverse culinary landscape. However, every so often, a destination emerges that resets the standard entirely. L’Appartement 4F, located in the picturesque West Village, is one such establishment. Originally born from a passionate home-baking project in a Brooklyn apartment (specifically unit 4F, hence the name), this bakery has transitioned into a brick-and-mortar sensation that captures the romantic essence of a Parisian boulangerie while remaining firmly rooted in the local New York community. For residents in the Manhattan region, it offers a refined yet intimate "walk-up" experience that feels like discovering a well-kept secret on a quiet, tree-lined street.
The bakery is the brainchild of a couple who turned their personal love for French baking into a professional pursuit that has garnered a cult-like following. At L’Appartement 4F, the focus is on quality over quantity, with each pastry reflecting a commitment to traditional techniques and high-quality ingredients. The atmosphere is undeniably charming, designed to evoke the feeling of a cozy home kitchen. It is the kind of place where the staff might surprise a regular with an extra treat just because, fostering a sense of warmth that can sometimes be hard to find in the hustle of the city. For those who appreciate the finer details of a laminated dough or the complex crumb of an artisan cookie, this West Village spot has quickly become a non-negotiable stop on the local bakery circuit.
Location and Accessibility
L’Appartement 4F is perfectly situated at 119 W 10th St, New York, NY 10011, USA. This location is nestled in one of the most desirable sections of the West Village, a neighborhood famed for its historic brownstones, winding streets, and sophisticated retail. Positioned on West 10th Street between Greenwich Avenue and 6th Avenue, the bakery is easily accessible for locals who enjoy starting their mornings with a walk through the neighborhood's quiet blocks. Its proximity to Jefferson Market Garden and Washington Square Park makes it an ideal place to grab a morning snack before heading to a nearby green space.
Public transportation accessibility is excellent, serving as a major advantage for commuters and visitors from across the New York region. The bakery is a short walk from several major subway hubs. The Christopher St-Sheridan Sq station (1 train) and the W 4th St-Wash Sq station (A, C, E, B, D, F, and M trains) provide a multitude of transit options. Additionally, the PATH train is nearby at the 9th Street station, making it a convenient destination for those coming from New Jersey. As with most of the West Village, street parking is extremely limited and highly regulated, so arriving via the subway or on foot is highly recommended. The shop’s "walk-up" nature fits perfectly with the pedestrian-heavy culture of the area, allowing for a quick and seamless transaction during a busy morning.

Features / Highlights

- Parisian-Level Quality: Baked goods that customers frequently describe as being on par with top-tier bakeries in Paris, particularly regarding the consistency and flavor of the dough.
- Intimate Atmosphere: Often described as the "cutest little walk-up spot," the shop’s aesthetic is perfectly aligned with the romantic charm of the West Village.

What is worth choosing
When visiting L’Appartement 4F, the most important piece of local advice is to arrive early. To ensure you have access to the full menu, getting there closer to opening—ideally before 10:00 AM—is essential, as many favorites sell out rapidly. The primary reason many people make the pilgrimage to this West 10th Street location is for the plain butter croissant. It is a masterclass in texture: flaky on the outside, buttery throughout, and perfectly aerated. For those who prefer a flavored twist, the Raspberry Almond and the Pistachio Rose croissants are frequently cited as "must-snag" items that offer a sophisticated, floral sweetness that isn't overpowering.
For a non-croissant option that has gained legendary status among regulars, the Tahini Chocolate Chip Cookie is an absolute must-order. The earthiness of the tahini perfectly balances the sweetness of the chocolate, resulting in a flavor profile and consistency that many customers claim has "ruined all other baked goods" for them. If you are lucky enough to find the almond croissant in stock, its rich filling and expertly baked exterior make it a standout choice that rivals any found in France. Whether you are there for a quick morning coffee and a classic pastry or looking to sample their more creative combinations, L’Appartement 4F provides a high-caliber experience that justifies every bit of its local hype. In a city of a million bakeries, this small West Village shop proves that when you do the classics with absolute perfection, the world—or at least all of New York—will beat a path to your door.
In summary, L’Appartement 4F is a quintessential New York success story, moving from a Brooklyn apartment to a Manhattan landmark through the sheer quality of its craft. For anyone in the New York region looking for an authentic, high-quality bakery experience, 119 West 10th Street is a destination that promises to deliver more than just a meal; it delivers a moment of genuine culinary joy.

baked goods here are absolutely perfect. the croissants are buttery, flaky, and delicious. it’s also the cutest little walk up spot and they gave me 2 free croissants too just because which was sooo sweet. already can’t wait to come back. they sell out of a lot of their baked goods pretty early so I’d def recommend going closer to opening bc i went on 10am on a Friday the second time and they had everything. loveeed the raspberry almond and pistachio rose- snag those if you can come early

Unfortunately, all other baked goods have now been ruined for me. The tahini chocolate chip cookie and almond croissant are reason enough to visit NYC again. The consistency, texture, and flavor of both were excellent, on par with Parisian bakeries. Please, please open a store in Colorado soon.

You can’t go wrong with any of the pastries here. There’s usually a line outside, but the wait is absolutely worth it. We got a plain croissant and a raspberry kouign-amann, and both were delightful. The croissant was perfectly flaky, and the raspberry pastry had just the right balance of sweetness. I’m already planning to go back to try their other pastries.

I think this is the best croissant I’ve ever had in the US. I had the everything croissant today, I am going to try the pain chocolate tomorrow. I have had 100s of croissants from NYC, upstate, to DC, La, SF, Boston. Hands down deserve their hype. Buttery, crispy, full of flavor, warm out of the oven. Delectable. Delicious. Perfect. The only other ones in this tier come from Nick & Son’s in Williamsburg. If you’ve been there then you know. Brooklyn with the bakeries.. boom! Also I live in Paris part time, I have had a very very good share of croissants in France. These are excellent. Photo is of the chocolate almond, which I promptly had the next day and have updated my review.

Cute bakery window with incredible baked goods and solid coffee. I was very pleased to find out that L’Appartment 4F had a location in the west village, and that they had a couple of croissants left at around 11.15 am on Christmas Eve. The croissants were excellent and this place definitely lives up to the hype - definitely worth a shot if you’re around here!
