It is a place where the visual aesthetic is just as enticing as the aroma of freshly baked goods wafting through the air. In a city that is constantly rushing, Empire Cake provides a welcoming space where the focus remains on simple pleasures executed with a high degree of craftsmanship. From their famous gourmet takes on classic snack cakes to their robust coffee program, the bakery serves as a community hub for those who appreciate quality ingredients and a friendly, neighborhood vibe.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Empire Cake, there are several standout items that have earned praise from the local community. For a quick and satisfying snack, the chocolate chip cookie is a top recommendation. It is celebrated for its traditional execution, featuring a generous distribution of chocolate and the ideal contrast between a crunchy exterior and a tender heart. Pairing this with one of their smooth lattes makes for an excellent afternoon "sweet escape."
For those looking for something a bit more whimsical, their selection of reimagined snack cakes is a must-try. These treats offer a sophisticated take on classic American lunchbox staples, using elevated ingredients that provide a much richer flavor than the mass-produced versions. They are perfect for gifting or as a conversation-starting dessert at a small gathering.
However, it is important for customers to communicate their specific preferences clearly when ordering more complex items. While many enjoy the decadence of their layered cakes, some specialty items like the Black Forest cake are known for being very icing-forward. If you prefer a higher cake-to-frosting ratio or a specific crumb consistency, the attentive staff is available to discuss these details to ensure your purchase meets your expectations. Whether it is a simple cookie or a grand celebration cake, Empire Cake remains a go-to destination for New Yorkers who value nostalgia, craftsmanship, and a friendly neighborhood atmosphere.

Empire Cake: A Sweet Escape in Greenwich Village I stopped into Empire for a peak inside (that is my story and I am sticking with it) and ended up with a chocolate chip cookie and a latte, and both hit exactly the right notes without any fuss. The cookie was well executed: crisp edges, soft center, generous chocolate distribution. The latte was smooth and well-balanced. Classic comfort executed well…sometimes “done right” is all you need. What really charmed me was the atmosphere. This place feels like a 1950s malt shop collided with a kid’s sugar-fueled fever dream—colorful, nostalgic, and genuinely welcoming. The staff was warm and attentive, and the prices were refreshingly reasonable for what you’re getting. If you’re in the Village and need a quick coffee and something sweet, Empire Cake delivers simple pleasures, done well.

Bought their black forest cake recently for my husband’s birthday. Terrible texture and consistency. It crumbled and fell apart the moment we cut it, ruining the bday cake-cutting experience. Also, it felt like each slice had too much icing and very little actual cake

I hate leaving poor reviews on businesses, so I want to highlight how delicious, and worth every penny our cake was! However, my son endured the worst service after calling and asking to pick his cake up later in the day; the person on the phone said that the store closed at 10pm and that he could grab it anytime before then. It turns out they closed at 9pm that day and he waited outside for 20 minutes in the cold last night, because the workers that were closing the store wouldn’t open the door. They made eye contact with him, then pretended he wasn’t there. All that was necessary was walking up to the door to say “Sorry, we’re closed”, and he could have explained the situation. But they ignored him as he awkwardly continued knocking and waving. Finally, a young man came to the door despite his colleagues choice to act unaware, and my son was able to explain and receive the cake. Thank God, because he would have had to show up to the party empty-handed. The young porter who came to the door was very kind, however his superior could use some customer service training. This is NOT a reflection of the business as a whole, and the cake was great. But the ordeal was stressful and I hope that the team can avoid doing this to another customer.

I recently ordered the Liz Lemon cake from Empire Cake for a birthday celebration, and I couldn't be more pleased. The cake was absolutely delicious, moist, flavorful, and perfectly balanced in sweetness. You can really taste the quality ingredients and care that went into making it. From placing the order to pickup, the process was smooth and professional. The staff was friendly and helpful, which made the experience even better.
