Nata Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the heart of Manhattan’s historic Greenwich Village, Nata has emerged as a specialized culinary destination that transports New Yorkers straight to the cobblestone streets of Lisbon. This artisanal bakery and coffee shop focuses on a singular, legendary pastry: the Pastel de Nata. For those unfamiliar with this Portuguese treasure, it is a bite-sized custard tart characterized by a blistered, caramelized top and an incredibly flaky, multi-layered puff pastry crust. While New York City is home to countless bakeries, Nata distinguishes itself by mastering this specific European classic, providing an authentic version that locals previously had to cross the Atlantic to find.
The shop’s philosophy is built on simplicity and excellence. By focusing on a narrow menu of high-quality tarts and craft coffee, Nata ensures that every item served meets a professional standard of "Europe-level" authenticity. The atmosphere is vibrant, modern, and youthful, reflecting its prime location near the New York University campus. Despite being a relatively new addition to the Waverly Place corridor, it has quickly become a community favorite where the scent of warm cinnamon and baked custard acts as a constant invitation to passersby. Whether you are a student looking for a quick study-break snack or a dessert aficionado on a city-wide pastry crawl, Nata offers a sophisticated yet friendly experience that celebrates the art of the Portuguese tart.
Location and Accessibility
Nata is perfectly situated at 11 Waverly Pl, New York, NY 10003, USA. This premier location puts the bakery in one of the most culturally rich and academically active sections of Greenwich Village. It is housed on the ground floor of a classic pre-war building, just a few steps away from the iconic Washington Square Park and the bustling NYU campus. This central positioning makes it a natural hub for students, faculty, and local residents who populate the neighborhood's tree-lined streets.
Accessibility is a standout feature for this location, as it sits near some of the city's most significant transit lines. It is less than a two-minute walk from the 8th St-NYU subway station, which serves the N, R, and W lines. Additionally, the Astor Place station (6 train) and the West 4th St-Washington Sq hub (A, C, E, B, D, F, M lines) are both within a five-to-eight-minute walking radius. For those traveling by bus, multiple local routes like the M1 and M55 provide easy access to the immediate area. While street parking in Greenwich Village is notoriously difficult, the high walkability score of the neighborhood ensures that Nata is an effortless "grab-and-go" destination for pedestrians and commuters alike.
Services Offered
Nata operates as a specialized boutique bakery and espresso bar, providing a streamlined service model that emphasizes quality and speed. Their primary services include:
- Fresh Batch Baking: The shop continuously produces fresh Natas throughout the day, often serving them "straight out of the oven" to ensure the pastry remains crisp and the custard stays creamy.
- Craft Coffee Program: A professional coffee service featuring a variety of espresso-based drinks, with a particular focus on pairings that complement the sweetness of the tarts.
- Bulk Box Options: While individual tarts are available, the shop specializes in boxes of 6, making it easy to bring a taste of Portugal to office meetings or social gatherings.
- Customized Toppings: Staff traditionally finish each tart with a dusting of powdered sugar and cinnamon for customers, adhering to the traditional Portuguese serving style.
- Efficient Counter Service: Designed for the fast-paced New York lifestyle, the service is quick and friendly, catering to the high volume of foot traffic from the nearby university.
- Takeout Specialization: Given the compact size of the shop and the lack of indoor seating, the service is optimized for the perfect portable snack.
Features / Highlights
Several distinct features contribute to Nata's standing as a must-visit bakery in Lower Manhattan:
- Authentic European Recipe: The Natas are noted for their authenticity, featuring the signature charred custard top and "glass-shattering" flaky crust that defines the traditional Portuguese style.
- Specialized Menu: Unlike general bakeries, Nata’s focus on one core product allows for a level of consistency and quality control that is rarely seen in larger establishments.
- Signature Drink Pairings: The menu includes unique creations like the Cinnamon Cortado and Lavender Latte, specifically designed to highlight the caramelized notes of the pastry.
- Warm Ambiance: The shop features a fresh, young design with a warm vibe that many customers compare to the inviting atmosphere of a Lisbon cafe.
- High Turnaround: Because the space is often packed with a lively student crowd, the tarts are constantly being restocked, ensuring that the product is never sitting on a shelf for long.
- Personalized Service: Staff are known for being pleasant and moving quickly through orders, often engaging with regulars and newcomers with genuine enthusiasm.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Nata, the choice is delightfully simple but incredibly rewarding. The absolute "must-have" is a box of 6 Natas. While you can certainly buy a single tart, regulars and first-timers alike quickly discover that "one is never enough." The contrast between the buttery, savory layers of the crust and the rich, slightly eggy custard is best enjoyed when the tart is still warm. Be sure to accept the traditional offer of cinnamon and powdered sugar on top; the aromatic spice cuts through the richness of the egg custard and creates a complex flavor profile that is truly addictive.
To round out the experience, the Cinnamon Cortado is the go-to drink recommendation. The boldness of the espresso and the hint of spice in the milk act as the perfect foil to the tart's sweetness. For those seeking something more refreshing, the Matcha Lemonade or the Lavender Latte offer a bright, floral lift that emphasizes the caramelized notes of the pastry. Whether you're stopping in for a quick "bite-size" custard tart on your way to Washington Square Park or picking up a box to share, Nata delivers a high-quality, authentic experience that has rightfully earned its place as the Village's premier Portuguese bakery.

Absolutely delicious, authentic Natas! It’s wonderful to finally be able to get an authentic version of these outside of Europe. I purchased a box of 6 and received a fresh batch straight out of the oven, needless to say, I ate half before I got home 🫢 The space is small and very packed with students during the week but the staff are very friendly and move quickly. I also love that they add the powdered sugar and cinnamon for you. Will be back, often!!

Nata is such a treat! This egg tart shop is a small piece of Portugal in NYC. The egg tarts are superb and I downed one in seconds 😆 You can buy 1 or they also sell a box of 2 (i recommend this bc 1 will not be enough) or 6 if you want to share with friends. There’s several drink options to order with your natas. I asked the staff for recs and they said the cinnamon cortado complements the pastel de nata really well, and i’m here to verify that was the perfect pairing! There’s no seating but there’s a counter to enjoy the quick bite or drink, in European fashion.
