Orwashers Bakery Introduce
In the high-energy landscape of Manhattan’s Upper West Side, few names carry as much historical weight and culinary prestige as Orwashers Bakery. Established in 1916, this legendary New York institution has spent over a century perfecting the art of the bake, transitioning from a beloved local storefront to a city-wide symbol of quality. Located at 440 Amsterdam Avenue, the Upper West Side location brings the rich heritage of the original East Side bakery to a new generation of New Yorkers, blending old-world Jewish baking traditions with contemporary global influences. For residents of the 10024 area, Orwashers isn't just a place to buy bread; it is a piece of living history that continues to define the standards of artisanal craftsmanship in the 21st century.
The story of Orwashers began with a Hungarian immigrant family dedicated to serving their community with the dense, flavorful rye and grain breads of their homeland. Today, under the stewardship of Keith Cohen, that legacy has been expanded to include a sophisticated "Bread Lab" philosophy. By collaborating with local farmers and even wineries to create unique starters, Orwashers has revolutionized the local bread scene while remaining fiercely loyal to the classics like pumpernickel and challah. The atmosphere at the Amsterdam Avenue shop is warm and welcoming, featuring a blend of rustic charm and modern efficiency that makes it a perfect neighborhood hub for a quick morning pick-me-up or a leisurely weekend treat.
Location and Accessibility
Orwashers Bakery is situated at 440 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10024, USA, occupying a prominent spot between West 81st and West 82nd Streets. This prime location places the bakery right in the heart of one of Manhattan’s most culturally rich neighborhoods. It is just a short walk from the American Museum of Natural History and the sprawling greenery of Central Park, making it an ideal destination for locals and visitors alike who are exploring the historic district.
Accessibility is a hallmark of this location. For those traveling via the New York City Subway, the bakery is conveniently close to the 79th Street station (1 train) and the 81st Street-Museum of Natural History station (B and C trains). Multiple bus lines, including the M7 and M11, run directly along Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues, providing easy transit from across the West Side. The storefront features both indoor bar seating and inviting outdoor tables, allowing patrons to soak in the vibrant Upper West Side street life. Whether you are a local resident walking the dog or a commuter stopping in on your way to the office, the bakery’s central position makes it an easy and essential stop in any daily routine.

Features and Highlights
What sets Orwashers apart from the myriad of bakeries in the New York region is its unique fusion of heritage and innovation. Key highlights that define the Orwashers experience include:
- Unique Sourdough Starters: Their breads utilize starters sourced from local New York State grapes and specialized fermentations, creating a complex flavor profile unique to the brand.
- Sourdough Bagels: Unlike the standard boiled bagel, Orwashers' sourdough bagels are steamed, resulting in a chewier, more complex crust and interior.
- Award-Winning Pastries: Home to the viral Pistachio Crunch Croissant, which combines French butter pastry with a rich pistachio filling and chocolate accents.
- Old-World Jewish Classics: A reliable source for authentic rugelach, babka, and black-and-white cookies that maintain the "better than Bubbe’s" standard.
- Locally Sourced Ingredients: A commitment to using New York State wheat and flour, supporting regional agriculture while ensuring peak freshness.
- Friendly Community Ambiance: Known for a staff that is as welcoming as the aroma of the bread, creating a true neighborhood gathering place.

The bakery is typically open daily from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, though it is always recommended to check for holiday-specific hours. What is Worth Choosing
When visiting Orwashers, the sheer variety can be overwhelming, but there are a few "absolute essentials" that define the experience. For bread lovers, the Heritage Sourdough is an undisputed must-buy; its uniquely long fermentation produces an open crumb and a burnished crust that is perfect for any table. If you are in the mood for a breakfast treat, the New York Breakfast bagel—an everything bagel schmeared with dill cream cheese, lox, onion, chives, and lemon zest—is widely considered one of the best in the city.
For those with a sweet tooth, the Pistachio Crunch Croissant is worth every bit of its viral fame, offering a decadent, multi-textured experience. Additionally, the hand-filled jelly donuts are a revelation; because they are filled at the moment of purchase, the dough remains light and the fruit preserves stay fresh and vibrant. If you are looking for a savory lunch, the steak sandwich or the "Piglet" (ham, eggs, and cheddar on a sourdough bagel) offer perfectly balanced flavors that satisfy even the most demanding Manhattan appetite. Choosing Orwashers means choosing a century of expertise, a commitment to local ingredients, and a taste of the authentic New York spirit. It is a bakery that honors its Hungarian roots while continuing to push the boundaries of what a modern neighborhood bake shop can be.
Ultimately, whether you are picking up a braided challah for a Friday night dinner or simply grabbing a coffee and a cookie while walking through the Upper West Side, Orwashers Bakery provides a high-quality, soulful experience that has stood the test of time and remains an essential part of the New York culinary fabric.

Very freshly baked food, wonderful tasting. We tried the donuts, pastries, cookies, danishes, and coffee drinks. They had delicious tasting breads (they had samples out of one, which was excellent), but we did not buy any. We liked it so much we went back the next day. Friendly staff, a bit of seating, really nice place to grab a quick snack or breakfast!

I went here back in October of 2024 and forgot to post this review. The Pistachio Crunch Croissant was really delicious! I enjoyed it while sitting outside. Friendly staff, too! The sign outside lured me in. I'll have to come back to try their sandwiches!

The chocolate chip cookie meets the hype. It is buttery and perfectly chewy with the perfect crunch around the edges. Plus it’s also huge (in fact I feel like all cookies should be the size of your face). Definitely swing by to pick up a cookie or two. I also got their New York breakfast bagel, and it was quite good. Lots of people doing take out but bar seating inside and tables outside.

Such a cute place to grab something quick! I found it from a site of the best chocolate chip cookies in the city and they were NOT lying, it’s definitely top ten. Shoutout to Grayson who helped me today and recommended trying the toasted marshmallow flavor in my latte, so good. Highly recommend visiting!

When I saw the sign that the chocolate chip cookie here was #5 on the Infatuation, I had to give it a try. Unfortunately, it was pretty disappointing. The cookie is sweet but otherwise no real flavor. The texture was nice - crunchy and sticky on the edges and soft in the middle but not particularly fresh. The chocolate cake donut was also ok. The almond croissant was excellent. Service was fine, not welcoming but not mean. The atmosphere was nice - busy and lots of people in and out.
