Mille-feuille Bakery Cafe Introduce
In the competitive culinary landscape of the Upper West Side, where every block offers a promise of something sweet, Mille-feuille Bakery Cafe stands as a refined destination for those seeking a true "slice of Paris" in New York City. Located prominently at 2175 Broadway, this charming establishment is the brainchild of Chef Olivier Dessyn, who transitioned from a career as an IT architect in France to train at the prestigious Ritz Paris. Since opening its doors, the bakery has become a staple for Manhattanites who prioritize technical precision and high-quality ingredients over the mass-produced alternatives found elsewhere in the city. The name itself, "Mille-feuille," refers to the iconic "thousand-leaf" French pastry, a moniker that signals the bakery's dedication to the delicate art of puff pastry and layered confections.
Walking into the Broadway location, visitors are greeted by an atmosphere that strikes a balance between a high-end Parisian patisserie and a cozy neighborhood hub. The air is consistently perfumed with the scent of high-grade vanilla beans and fermenting dough, a sensory confirmation of the bakery's commitment to traditional methods. While the space is intimate and can become bustling during peak morning hours and weekends, it remains a favorite for locals looking for a sophisticated start to their day. For New Yorkers navigating the intersection of Broadway and 77th Street, Mille-feuille offers an experience that is both a daily ritual and a celebratory destination, making it a critical player in the local 10023 food scene.
Location and Accessibility are key factors for this Upper West Side gem. Situated at 2175 Broadway, New York, NY 10023, the bakery occupies a prime spot near the historic Hotel Belleclaire. Its position makes it exceptionally accessible for those exploring the Upper West Side’s cultural landmarks. It is just a few blocks away from the American Museum of Natural History and the sprawling greenery of Central Park’s West Side. For those utilizing the New York City subway, the 79th Street station (serving the 1 train) is only two blocks north, and the 72nd Street express station (serving the 1, 2, and 3 trains) is a short five-block walk south. This makes it a convenient stop for commuters heading downtown or visitors staying in the neighborhood's many boutique hotels.
The bakery is also well-served by local bus routes, including the M104 which runs directly along Broadway. The storefront features a traditional street-level entrance, providing easy access for the many parents with strollers and residents with dogs who frequent this family-oriented neighborhood. While the interior seating is limited—true to the style of many authentic Parisian cafes—the shop's proximity to public benches and parks offers ample opportunities for patrons to enjoy their treats in the classic "New York picnic" style during warmer months.
Services Offered at Mille-feuille Bakery Cafe are comprehensive, catering to the needs of the casual coffee drinker and the serious pastry aficionado alike. The establishment prides itself on its artisanal approach, with every item crafted under the guidance of Chef Dessyn. Key services include:

- Authentic French Lineage: Founded by a chef trained at the Ritz in Paris, ensuring that techniques like lamination and cream stabilization are performed to European standards.
- Signature Vanilla Use: The bakery is known for its "immaculate" vanilla flavor, using high-quality beans that are often visible as delicate specks in their creams and custards.
- Freshness Guarantee: A focus on small-batch baking to ensure that the flaky layers of the croissants and the crispness of the mille-feuille are maintained throughout the day.
- Clean Aesthetic: A bright, well-lit interior that showcases the pastry case as the centerpiece of the room.
- Warm Hospitality: Staff members, such as the widely praised baristas, are known for providing a welcoming environment and immaculate service.
- Seasonal Innovation: A menu that evolves with the seasons, offering limited-time items like peach crumble tarts or blueberry hibiscus croissants.
Contact Information is essential for those looking to secure a specific pastry or inquire about large-scale orders. Given the bakery's popularity, calling ahead for holiday pre-orders is highly recommended for Upper West Side residents.

What is worth choosing when you visit Mille-feuille? For a first-time visitor, the namesake "Mille-feuille" (Napoleon) is a non-negotiable choice. It is widely regarded as one of the best in the city, praised for pastry cream that is fresh, airy, and not over-sweet, sandwiched between layers of perfectly caramelized puff pastry. If you are looking for a morning staple, the Pain Au Raisin and the Almond Croissant are local favorites, often described as having "immaculate" texture and a rich, buttery finish.
For those with a preference for beverages, pairing your pastry with a "dirty chai latte" or a cappuccino with masterfully executed latte art is highly recommended. If you are in the mood for something smaller, the macarons—particularly the pistachio and the raspberry—offer a perfect ratio of thin, crunchy shell to moist, flavorful filling. While some items may sell out quickly on busy weekends, the consistently high quality of the "decently priced" staples makes every trip to this Broadway corner worthwhile. Choosing Mille-feuille means choosing a business that prioritizes the craft of French baking, ensuring that your morning coffee break feels a little more like a trip across the Atlantic. This looks like a French cafe but does not feel like a French cafe, except, maybe, in prices. In most cafes in Paris, you want to try everything! Here – not so much. Some items looked like they were made yesterday and left overnight. The milk station was messy and there were papers on the floor and a box of napkins in the hallway leading to the bathroom. The cappuccinos and the pasties we had were pretty decent.
