Pick A Bagel on 23rd street Introduce
For over thirty years, the "New York way" of making bagels has been a cornerstone of the city’s culinary identity, and Pick A Bagel on 23rd Street stands as a steadfast guardian of this tradition. Located in the vibrant Gramercy neighborhood, this establishment is part of a celebrated Manhattan mini-empire that first opened its doors in 1988. Unlike mass-produced bread rings found in grocery stores, the bagels here are crafted using time-honored techniques: they are hand-rolled and kettle-boiled before they ever see the inside of an oven. This specific process is what creates the legendary contrast that New Yorkers demand—a distinctively crisp, shiny exterior that yields to a dense, chewy, and slightly malty interior. For locals, Pick A Bagel isn't just a shop; it’s a reliable morning ritual and a reliable source of high-quality carbs in a neighborhood that values both speed and authenticity.
The atmosphere at the 23rd Street location is a blend of a classic New York deli and a high-volume bakery. It is a space designed for efficiency, catering to the diverse crowd of the East Side—from students at nearby colleges to professionals heading toward Midtown. The shop features expansive glass cases filled with a colorful array of house-made cream cheeses and fresh-baked pastries, creating a sensory experience that hits you the moment you walk in. While the establishment has faced the typical challenges of a high-pressure city service environment, its longevity in the competitive Manhattan market speaks to the quality of its core product. Whether you are a regular who has been visiting for decades or a newcomer looking for your first "real" NYC bagel, the focus remains squarely on the craft of the boil and the bake.

What is worth choosing
When you find yourself at Pick A Bagel on 23rd Street, the "Everything Bagel" is the undisputed king of the menu. Locals often describe it as the perfect canvas for a variety of toppings—try it toasted with plain cream cheese for a classic experience, or get creative with a savory spread like the Scallion or Lox Capers Dill. The seasoning on the everything bagel is robust and well-distributed, offering that essential New York mix of salt, garlic, onion, and seeds. For a unique international twist mentioned by some savvy regulars, an everything bagel toasted with cheese—and perhaps a bit of Vegemite if you're feeling adventurous—creates a flavor profile that is both comforting and bold.
Beyond the standard bagel and schmear, the Smoked Salmon Sandwich is a premium choice that showcases the shop's commitment to quality. Featuring thinly sliced Norwegian salmon and your choice of cream cheese, it is a sophisticated breakfast or lunch that feels like a true Manhattan indulgence. If you are looking for something lighter, the Low-Cal Veggie Cream Cheese is a fan favorite, providing plenty of flavor without the heavy richness of the traditional spread. For those with a sweet tooth, the Black and White cookie is a mandatory add-on; it is soft, cake-like, and provides the perfect nostalgic finish to a salty breakfast. Finally, don't overlook their "Fourteen to a Dozen" deal if you're buying for a group—it’s the best way to sample the wide variety of bagels, including the Flats and Bialys, ensuring there is something for everyone at the table. Whether you're grabbing a single "hand-rolled" ring or an "Executive Breakfast" platter for the office, sticking to the signature kettle-boiled items is the surest way to experience why Pick A Bagel remains a 23rd Street staple.

The owner is such a pretentious, arrogant, MEAN person. What kind of restaurant owner replies to a customer’s honest review like this?? Do you think someone needs to have worked at a bagel shop in order to have a valid review of one? That’s ridiculously pompous and stupid to think so! SOMEONE’s PAYING FOR YOUR FOOD- THEY HAVE A RIGHT TO TELL OTHERS ABOUT THEIR BAD EXPERIENCE! Just cause you have your ego hurt, doesn’t mean you should openly blast honest reviewers of your food like a bully. Do better.

I came in & I looked at the menu and was met with stares from the 4 guys behind the counter. They rushed me with their eyes but I took my time to see what I wanted. The man rudely asked me”Can I help you?” I said “One sec, I’m looking at the menu.” They continued to stare as another person entered the store and he shouted out”next!”. I ordered a pastrami egg and cheese. They made my sandwich and charged me $10.99. I’m including a picture of the sandwich, please look at how much pastrami they gave me purposely. Literally 2 pieces of pastrami. To make your customers feel rushed and then mess with the quality of their food and I did nothing but walk in on a beautiful saturday afternoon to just eat. I’ll make sure to skip this place going forward. And please exercise caution when you come here. I guess it depends on how they’re feeling or maybe how you look that determines how you’ll be treated. In times like this, this behavior is very disappointing.

Bagels are nice and chewy. Just a bit dense and the prices a bit high which is to be expected in NYC and the heart of 23rd street. But it’s nice to have choices of mini bagels and flat bagels. The toppings and cream cheese flavors are super fresh and good. Lots of tuna, whitefish, salmon, lox, and vege choices. Nice healthy juices and coffee made here. The best part the staff were very nice. That always makes me appreciate the place more than the food.
