Black Star Bakery & Cafe Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the heart of the Gramercy neighborhood, Black Star Bakery & Cafe has established itself as a premier destination for those who appreciate the intersection of high-quality artisanal baking and a sophisticated cafe culture. Located on East 24th Street, this independent gem has become a staple for local New Yorkers seeking a refined alternative to the city's larger commercial chains. The bakery is part of a celebrated small-chain family founded by Dan and Odehel Magor, who brought a vision of airy, architecturally designed spaces and high-caliber ingredients to the New York culinary scene. At the Gramercy branch, the focus remains steadfast on craftsmanship, with a menu that highlights the "impeccably made" nature of every croissant, danish, and latte served.
Black Star Bakery & Cafe is frequently described by regulars as a place where food is "treated with love." While the aesthetic is modern and clean, the atmosphere remains warm and inviting, offering a bright reprieve from the bustle of Manhattan. For locals, it serves as a reliable anchor for a morning routine or a weekend indulgence. The bakery prides itself on freshness, with a kitchen that emphasizes subtle flavors and high-quality proteins. Whether you are a neighbor stopping in for a quick espresso or a foodie looking to explore their creative pastry rotations, Black Star provides a professional yet heartfelt experience that captures the authentic community spirit of the 10010 area.
Location and Accessibility
Conveniently situated at 241 E 24th St, New York, NY 10010, USA, Black Star Bakery & Cafe is located between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. This prime Gramercy location makes it easily accessible for residents of Peter Cooper Village, Stuyvesant Town, and the surrounding medical and academic institutions. The shop's presence on a relatively quiet side street adds to its charm as a "hidden gem" that is nevertheless in the center of the action. For those navigating the city, the cafe is a short walk from the 23rd Street subway station, which provides access to the 6, R, and W lines, making it a convenient stop for cross-town commuters and visitors alike.
The shop’s physical layout is intimate and focused on efficient counter service. Locals should note that while there is limited seating—consisting of a handful of small tables inside and a few outdoor spots when weather permits—the space is designed for high-quality turnover. The accessibility of the location is further enhanced by its presence on major local delivery platforms, allowing those in the 10010 and 10016 zip codes to enjoy their favorites at home. It is important for visitors to be aware of the specific "house rules" that maintain the cafe's atmosphere: the shop encourages real connection by not providing public WiFi and maintaining a policy against laptop use, ensuring the small seating area remains available for those looking to enjoy a meal and conversation.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Black Star Bakery & Cafe, the standout savory choice is undoubtedly the Apple & Brie Croissant. This sandwich is a masterclass in flavor balance, featuring crisp apple slices and creamy brie nestled within a perfectly laminated, flaky croissant, often finished with a touch of honey and arugula. For those seeking a heartier start to their day, the Breakfast Burrito has been hailed by regulars as one of the best in the city, packed with fresh ingredients and consistently "made to perfection." These savory mains are often the highlight for local professionals who don't mind spending a little extra for a meal that feels genuinely premium.
On the sweeter side, the Cherry & Yogurt Danish is highly recommended for its impeccable construction and fresh, tart flavor. It pairs beautifully with their signature Chai Latte, which is known for its authentic spice profile and creamy finish. For the adventurous palate, the Strawberry or Lavender Matcha Iced Lattes offer a refreshing and colorful twist on the classic tea latte. While prices are reflective of Manhattan's artisanal market, the consensus among local users is that the quality of the ingredients and the "freshness in every bite" make it a worthwhile investment for a superior breakfast or afternoon treat. If you are looking for a place that prioritizes the craft of baking over the convenience of a workspace, Black Star’s Gramercy outpost is the perfect choice.

Having a lovely time here. The food is supurb. Everything taste fresh and is treated with love. The only downside is the prices are a little steep, but isn't that the case with everything nowadays? We spent around 40 for two croissant sandwiches and two drinks. I also added an extra protien. If you got the money to spend, this place is a great choice! Definitely wanna come back here for the sweet treats. Service was friendly and efficient.

Fantastic food; my chai latte, cherry & yogurt danish and apple & brie croissant were all delicious and impeccably made. Great food and a nice pleasant atmosphere. You order at the counter and then get called up to grab your food when it is ready. There's only a handful of small tables and even fewer outside, weather permitting. Note that there is no bathroom, no WiFi, and a sign against using laptops.

The almond croissant is okay, kind of small. There was only 1 left when I went in. It's very small inside, which is okay. The Oatmilk chai 1/2 sweet was just okay. I'll try some others in the area. I'd get it next time without cinnamon on top.

Great coffee, delicious pastries and friendly baristas. I love when coffee shops offer pistachio milk! The pistachio milk cappuccino was delish.
