Pick A Bagel Introduce
For those navigating the vibrant streets of Manhattan, the quest for the perfect New York bagel is a journey that often leads to the doors of Pick A Bagel. Situated in a bustling section of the city that bridges the gap between the theater district and the residential charm of Hell’s Kitchen, this shop has established itself as a reliable anchor for locals and visitors alike. In a city where time is the most valuable currency, Pick A Bagel offers a seamless blend of high-quality culinary craft and the efficient service that New Yorkers demand. It is more than just a quick stop for a morning carbohydrate fix; it is a community staple where the aroma of toasted seeds and fresh cream cheese creates an inviting atmosphere amidst the urban rush.
The experience at Pick A Bagel is defined by its commitment to the traditional New York bagel profile—a crust that provides a satisfying snap upon the first bite, leading into a dense, chewy interior that holds up against an array of heavy toppings. While many bagel shops in the city have shifted toward a strictly "to-go" model, this location on 8th Avenue prides itself on providing a space where patrons can actually sit and enjoy their meal. The interior is noted for being clean, comfortable, and remarkably easy to talk in, making it a rare find for those who want a momentary reprieve from the sidewalk congestion of Midtown West. Whether you are catching up with friends on a Saturday afternoon or seeking a quiet corner to enjoy an americano before a busy workday, the environment here is designed to accommodate the diverse rhythms of New York life.
What truly sets Pick A Bagel apart is the hospitality that accompanies the food. In a city often characterized by its "no-nonsense" service style, the team at this location is frequently praised for their kindness and attention to detail. From the "sweet" demeanor of the order-takers to the thoughtful gestures of the kitchen staff—such as adding a complimentary smear of cream cheese when a customer expresses curiosity—the human element is a major part of why locals keep coming back. It is this combination of a welcoming atmosphere and a high-tier product that has earned Pick A Bagel its reputation as a "10/10" destination for bagel enthusiasts across the five boroughs.
Location and Accessibility
Pick A Bagel is strategically located at 891 8th Ave, New York, NY 10019, USA. This prime piece of real estate makes it exceptionally accessible to a wide variety of users. Positioned between 53rd and 54th Streets, the shop is a stone's throw away from some of the most iconic landmarks in the United States, including Columbus Circle and Central Park. For local residents living in the high-rise apartments of Midtown West or the brownstones of Hell’s Kitchen, it serves as the ultimate "neighborhood" shop that is just a short walk away from home. Its proximity to numerous hotels and local accommodations also makes it a top choice for those staying in the city who want an authentic breakfast experience without a long commute.
Accessibility via public transportation is one of the shop’s strongest suits. It is situated near several major subway hubs, including the 50th Street Station (C and E trains) and the 7th Avenue Station (B, D, and E trains). Additionally, the 59th Street-Columbus Circle transit hub is only a few blocks north, providing access to the 1, A, B, C, and D lines. This means that whether you are coming from the Upper West Side, Downtown, or even the outer boroughs, getting to Pick A Bagel is straightforward and convenient. For those who prefer the bus, multiple lines run along 8th and 9th Avenues, ensuring that no matter how you navigate the city, a fresh bagel is always within reach.

What is worth choosing
When it comes to deciding what to order at Pick A Bagel, there are two primary paths that locals swear by. If you are in the mood for an indulgent, high-end experience, the lox bagel is an absolute "10/10" choice. While it is on the pricier side of the spectrum—often approaching the $20 mark—the quality of the fish and the generous portioning make it a worthwhile investment for any seafood lover. The lox is fresh, buttery, and pairs perfectly with a plain or everything bagel, especially when topped with capers, onions, and a thick layer of cream cheese. It is the kind of meal that lingers in your memory long after the last bite.
For those looking for a classic, hearty New York breakfast, the bacon, egg, and cheese on a toasted everything bagel is a top-tier contender. Customers frequently highlight how "hot and delicious" these sandwiches are, noting that the bacon is cooked to a perfect crispness and the eggs are fluffy. To truly elevate this order, take a cue from local regulars and ask to add a bit of cream cheese to the sandwich; the creamy texture against the salty bacon and savory everything seasoning creates a flavor combination that is deeply satisfying. Pair your meal with one of their solid americanos for a complete New York morning. Whether you are opting for the luxury of lox or the comfort of a breakfast sandwich, Pick A Bagel delivers a consistent, high-quality meal that exemplifies why this city is the bagel capital of the world.

Delicious bagels & great service! • Went around 2 PM—no crowds or lines, which was perfect. • Ordered the egg, bacon, and cheese on an everything bagel. I mentioned I was curious about cream cheese, and the staff kindly added it—such a nice gesture! • Bagel was delicious, hot, and perfectly toasted. • The americano was solid too. • Clean dining area inside and very comfortable. • Conveniently located near my accommodation. • Will definitely be back to try other variants!

Had a lox bagel that just the thought of is making my mouth water here. 10/10. A bit on the pricier side of lox bagels. I paid almost $20 for mine. My friends got a bacon egg and cheese and a bacon and egg and said those bagel sandwiches were satisfactory and tasty but not mind blowing. The service here was great. The guy who took my order was a sweetie. The atmosphere is pleasant to sit and easy to talk in. There’s a good amount of seating if they’re not busy. We went around 2pm on a Saturday and they were pretty busy. 10/10 would recommend.

I haven’t tried their bagel sandwiches yet, but I’ve ordered from this bagel shop twice through Too Good To Go, and I’ve been very satisfied both times. The portions are incredibly generous — I got more than 20 bagels for $6 — and the quality was honestly very good. The staff is friendly, and even though I usually take my order to go rather than eating on site, every visit has been pleasant. It’s the kind of bagel shop that feels nice to stop by, especially since it’s located in a great neighborhood. I definitely recommend it, and I’ll most likely come back to try their bagel sandwiches soon.

While visiting New York City recently I really wanted to find a good bagel place. I searched Yelp and Google Maps and found a highly rated spot within 2 blocks of my hotel! So on a rainy Autumn morning I made my way to the Pick A Bagel at the corner of 8th Avenue and 53rd street. I joined the line and scanned the menu, seeing many choices of bagel flavors and schemer (they have 8 flavors of cream cheese). I chose the everything bagel with regular cream cheese and for my wife the pumpernickel with regular cream cheese as well. I scooted down the line to the cashier and ordered two small mocha to go. Within a few minutes I was walking back to our hotel with bagels and fresh coffee. The bagels were soft and full of flavor - and they were not stingy with the cream cheese - plenty loaded into our bagels. Loved our food so much, I returned the next morning and ordered an Egg Sandwich with bacon and cheese on a plain bagel. It was also delicious. They have 5 locations in Manhattan - will happily return for a breakfast on the go when I make my way back to the Big Apple.

I’ve been visiting Pick A Bagel for years now, and every time I’m back in New York, it’s one of those places that feels non-negotiable. You know the kind — not fancy, not trying to impress, just consistently there — part of the rhythm of the city. After so many visits, it felt overdue to finally write a proper review. The shop is almost always busy, which in many ways is part of its charm. It feels like real New York: people coming and going, locals grabbing their usual, tourists trying to figure out what’s happening, and staff moving at full pace. That said, the layout does make things a bit confusing. With two entrances, a slightly messy queuing system, signs pointing in different directions, and tables scattered about, it’s not immediately clear where you’re meant to stand or wait — especially if you’re new. You sort of just… absorb the chaos and hope you’re doing it right. This morning I came in around 10:30am, right in the thick of the breakfast rush. I ordered my go-to: a bacon, egg, and cheese on a garlic bagel. And honestly — this is why I keep coming back. The bagel was exactly as it should be: chewy with a proper bite, not soft and bready like so many imitators. The bacon was cooked perfectly, crispy but not burnt, and everything came together in that comforting, no-nonsense way that only a proper New York bagel shop can deliver. Food-wise, Pick A Bagel still absolutely delivers. However, this visit wasn’t perfect. Despite how busy the store was, the seating area was noticeably messy. Tables were covered in rubbish, the floor could have used attention, and during my entire visit I didn’t see anyone cleaning or tidying up. It’s not the end of the world, but it does take away slightly from the experience — especially when you’re sitting in rather than grabbing and going. Still, even with the clutter, confusion, and chaos, Pick A Bagel remains a staple of my New York visits. It’s familiar, reliable, and deeply woven into my personal New York routine. I’ll absolutely be back — because when the bagels are that good, you forgive a lot.
