Sable's Smoked Fish Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In a city where the "appetizing" tradition is as much a part of the landscape as the skyscrapers themselves, Sable’s Smoked Fish stands as a titan of the craft. Established in 1992 by brothers Danny and Kenny Sze, who honed their skills at the legendary Zabar’s for over a decade, Sable’s has spent more than thirty years defining what first-class smoked fish should taste like. While many shops in Manhattan claim to have the best lox, Sable’s has the pedigree and the local following—including celebrity fans like Derek Jeter—to back it up. It is an authentic neighborhood institution that preserves the vanishing art of hand-slicing fish with surgical precision, ensuring each piece is thin enough to be translucent yet bursting with buttery flavor.
Entering Sable’s is a quintessential New York experience. It is not a sprawling supermarket or a trendy café; it is a dedicated shop where the product is the star. The walls are adorned with Polaroids of famous patrons and longtime locals, creating a sense of history and community that you simply cannot find in modern chains. The atmosphere is cozy, often bustling with residents picking up their weekend brunch supplies or commuters grabbing a quick, high-quality sandwich. While the primary focus is on the incredible variety of smoked fish, the shop is a full-service appetizing destination, offering everything from fresh-baked bagels to house-made salads and luxury caviar. For Upper East Siders, a trip to Sable’s is more than just a grocery run—it is a weekly ritual of quality and tradition.
Location and Accessibility
Sable’s Smoked Fish is located at 1330 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10075, USA. Situated on the northwest corner of 76th Street and 3rd Avenue, the shop is in the heart of one of Manhattan’s most prestigious and residential neighborhoods. This location is a relatively recent home for the business, which moved from its original 2nd Avenue storefront in late 2020 to make way for neighborhood development. The transition has only strengthened its bond with the community, placing it even closer to the foot traffic of 3rd Avenue while remaining firmly within the 10075 zip code that has supported it for decades.
Accessibility is a major advantage for this location. It is just a short walk from the 77th Street subway station, served by the 6 train, and the 72nd Street station for the Q train. Several major bus lines, including the M101, M102, and M103, run directly along 3rd and Lexington Avenues, making it an easy stop for those traveling up or downtown. For those looking to enjoy their purchase outdoors, the shop is only a few blocks east of Central Park, providing the perfect opportunity for a high-end picnic. While indoor seating is limited, the shop is designed for efficiency, handling the "schlepping" crowds with the practiced speed of veteran New York countermen.

What is worth choosing
If it is your first time visiting Sable’s, you must start with the sliced Nova on a bagel. While many shops offer smoked salmon, the quality here is frequently described as "incredible" and "easily the best in New York" by discerning locals. The fish is remarkably fresh, never oily, and sliced so thin it practically melts on the tongue. Pair it with their scallion cream cheese, a slice of tomato, and a few capers for the definitive Manhattan brunch experience. For those who want to venture into the shop's specialties, the smoked sable (black cod) is a namesake for a reason—it offers a sweetness and buttery texture that is entirely distinct from salmon.
Another item highly worth choosing is the lobster salad. It is a standout even in a city full of great seafood, known for being heavy on the lobster and light on the filler. For a more adventurous meal, try the "American Sushi Roll," which cleverly uses smoked salmon as the "wrapper" for a trio of their best seafood salads. If you are looking for a hot meal, the matzoh ball soup is a comforting, high-quality staple that locals swear by during the winter months. While you might pay a premium for additions like lettuce or tomato, the quality of the fish itself offers a value that few other places can match. Whether you’re ordering a single poppy seed bagel with lox or a full catering platter, choosing Sable’s ensures you’re eating like a true Upper East Side maven.

Sable's Smoked Fish Reviews

Overall, good bagels/brunch spot. This is firstly a shop to buy fish. Their sliced Nova was incredible, and easily the best I’ve had in New York on a bagel. Thinly sliced and extremely fresh. Bagel was on the better end, chewy, though have had better bagels and spread elsewhere. I also was not a fan of $1 to add one of lettuce/onion/tomato, so $3 for all, though the price was otherwise roughly on market for what I got if not higher value. Atmosphere was average, not a lot of room to move around. Service was also average. Overall, 4 stars from me for the stand out smoked salmon.

Over rated. Nothing specially. I got a cream cheese and lox . I have had better quality and not paid $20 for a regular poppy seed bagel.

Best smoked salmon and tuna salad we ever had. Bagel was thinner than normal which made perfect ratio to the fish. Employees were very nice and helpful. You can sample before deciding on what you’d like
