Schmackary's

362 W 45th St, New York, NY 10036, USA

We tried Schmackary’s cookies while visiting friends who absolutely raved about them and generously shared some with us. I had high expectations going in, but honestly, I’ve had better cookies. That said, it’s very possible this was because the cookies were a day old. They were a bit hard and didn’t have that fresh baked softness I usually love. It made me realize these are probably best enjoyed fresh in the store, which surprised me a bit since they also ship nationwide. With that in mind, I can see how they would be much better right after they’re baked. I’d be open to trying them again next time I’m in New York City, or San Diego since that location would be closer for me, to see how they compare when they’re fresh. - MeeshElle

Schmackary's Introduce

In the high-energy corridor of New York City’s Theater District, few places have captured the local imagination quite like Schmackary’s. Nestled in the heart of Hell's Kitchen, this bakery has become an institution for Broadway performers and theater fans alike. Known colloquially as the "Stork of Broadway," Schmackary’s has built its reputation on a dizzying array of inventive cookie flavors that rotate seasonally, ensuring that no two visits to the shop are ever quite the same. For New Yorkers navigating the hustle of Midtown, it serves as a sweet sanctuary where the classic American cookie is reimagined through a lens of modern creativity and urban flair.

The experience of Schmackary’s is deeply intertwined with the rhythm of the city. While many bakeries close their doors as the sun sets, this shop thrives on the late-night energy of the Broadway crowd. It is a place where high expectations are the norm, and the shop meets them by offering a product that is distinct from the traditional "thick and gooey" style found elsewhere in the city. Instead, Schmackary’s focuses on a slightly flatter, more texture-focused cookie that emphasizes bold, often experimental flavor profiles. Whether you are a local resident or a visitor guided by the raves of friends, the shop offers a unique window into the competitive and colorful world of New York City desserts.

Location and Accessibility

Schmackary’s is conveniently located at 362 W 45th St, New York, NY 10036, USA. This prime location puts the bakery right on the edge of the Theater District and the residential charm of Hell’s Kitchen. Being situated on West 45th Street, it is just a short walk from some of the most famous theaters in the world, making it an ideal destination for a "post-show" treat. The shop’s proximity to the heart of the city means it is constantly surrounded by the vibrant street life that defines Manhattan, yet it retains a cozy, neighborhood feel once you step inside.

For those utilizing the New York City transit system, accessibility is exceptional. The bakery is within walking distance of the 42nd St-Port Authority Bus Terminal (A, C, E lines) and the 50th St station (C, E lines). Additionally, the major transit hub at Times Square–42nd St (1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, S lines) is only a few blocks away. This makes Schmackary’s a highly convenient stop for commuters heading home or for those spending a Saturday night in the city. Its central location ensures that whether you are walking from a nearby office or taking a detour during a night out, the shop is easy to find and perfectly integrated into the Midtown grid.

  • Experimental Flavor Profiles: From the tea-infused Earl Grey Lavender to the eclectic "Hangover" cookie, the shop isn't afraid to push boundaries.
  • Texture-Focused Baking: The cookies are known for a specific bite—best enjoyed fresh to appreciate the balance of a firm exterior and a soft heart.
  • Frosting-to-Cookie Ratio: Many of their specialty cookies, like the Key Lime, feature generous frosting that acts as a focal point of the dessert.
  • Saturday Night Energy: The shop is a popular destination for weekend night owls, providing a lively alternative to traditional bars.
  • Freshness Priority: While the shop ships nationwide, locals know that the cookies are at their absolute peak when enjoyed right out of the oven in the store.

What is worth choosing

Navigating the menu at Schmackary’s can be an adventure in itself due to the sheer number of options. For those who appreciate bold, traditional flavors, the Peanut Butter cookie is a standout choice. It is widely regarded as a favorite among regulars for its strong, authentic peanut butter taste and excellent texture. It captures the essence of a classic cookie while maintaining the shop's signature style. If you are looking for something that highlights the bakery's creative side, the Key Lime cookie is worth choosing for its decent frosting-to-cookie ratio and its mild, pleasant pie-inspired flavor.

For fans of chocolate, "The Classic" is a staple, though it is worth noting that it leans into a saltier profile which many New Yorkers find helps to balance the sweetness of the dough. If you are a fan of floral notes, the Earl Grey Lavender tea cookie offers a very distinct lavender taste that is unique in the Manhattan cookie scene. However, the most important tip for any visitor is to enjoy these cookies fresh. While the shop is famous for shipping, the consensus among local critics and customers is that the "fresh baked softness" is best experienced in the store. If you happen to visit on a Saturday night or after a Broadway show, grab a freshly baked Peanut Butter or White Chocolate cookie and enjoy it while it's still warm—this is where the bakery's reputation truly comes to life. Whether you are a fan of their experimental "Hangover" cookie or prefer the simplicity of a classic chocolate chip, Schmackary’s offers a colorful, quintessentially New York dessert experience that is always worth a try when you are in the 45th Street neighborhood.
