William Greenberg Desserts Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the heart of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, William Greenberg Desserts stands as a living monument to New York City’s rich culinary heritage. Since opening its doors in 1946, this legendary institution has transitioned from a local post-war dream into a globally recognized symbol of artisanal baking. Founded by William Greenberg Jr., who famously used poker winnings to sign his first lease, the bakery has remained a steadfast presence on Madison Avenue for eight decades. It is a place where the recipes haven’t changed, but the fans span generations—from long-time neighborhood residents to international tourists seeking the "gold standard" of New York sweets.
While many bakeries chase the latest viral trends, William Greenberg Desserts prides itself on the perfection of the classics. The bakery is most famous for its Black and White cookies, which have been voted the best in the city by New York Magazine and featured in iconic cultural touchstones like Seinfeld and Mad Men. The atmosphere at the 1100 Madison Avenue flagship is a blend of retro charm and modern sophistication, following a recent remodel that expanded the space to better serve its ever-growing community. As a fully kosher-certified establishment, it remains an essential destination for holiday staples, special occasion cakes, and the simple, daily joy of a high-quality butter cookie.
Location and Accessibility
William Greenberg Desserts is located at 1100 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10028, USA, positioned elegantly between 82nd and 83rd Streets. This prime location places the bakery just a single block away from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the lush greenery of Central Park, making it the perfect "sweet treat" stop for a weekend of museum-hopping or a park stroll. The shop’s signature red-and-white exterior is an unmistakable landmark in the sophisticated retail landscape of Madison Avenue.
For those navigating the city via public transit, the bakery is highly accessible. It is a short walk from the 86th Street Subway Station (serving the 4, 5, and 6 lines) and is well-served by the M1, M2, M3, and M4 bus lines that run directly along Madison and Fifth Avenues. The 1100 Madison Avenue flagship has been recently updated to include a convenient delivery window and an expanded interior shopping area. For those who prefer to enjoy their treats on-site, there is a small, charming outdoor seating area that allows customers to soak in the Upper East Side atmosphere while indulging in a pastry. The store maintains consistent hours throughout the week, though it is a popular spot on Sunday mornings, so arriving early is often recommended for the best selection.

Features / Highlights
What truly distinguishes William Greenberg Desserts is its unwavering dedication to tradition and its status as a cultural icon. Here are the highlights that make every visit special:
- The Iconic Black and White Cookie: Unlike the dry, bread-like versions found in delis, Greenberg’s version features a soft, cake-like texture and a signature hand-applied fondant icing that remains supple.
- Heritage Recipes: Current owner Carol Becker has preserved the original 1946 recipes, ensuring that the flavors today are identical to those enjoyed by New Yorkers eighty years ago.
- Celebrity and Media Recognition: Endorsed by the likes of Ina Garten and Oprah Winfrey, and featured on major television networks, the bakery is a frequent stop for food critics and celebrities alike.
- The Famous Red Cookie Tin: A symbol of New York gifting, their desserts are often packaged in iconic red tins that have become collectible items for many families.
- Authentic Jewish Confections: Highlights include their "Schnecken" (a traditional yeasted bun with pecans and cinnamon), fudgy brownies, and flaky rugelach.
- Vegan and Gluten-Free Options: In response to modern dietary needs, the bakery has introduced high-quality vegan and gluten-free versions of their most famous treats, including the black and white cookie.

What is worth choosing
If you only choose one thing at William Greenberg Desserts, it must be the Black and White Cookie. It is the quintessential New York experience, offering a perfect balance between the chocolate and vanilla sides on a base that feels more like a delicate drop-cake than a standard cookie. For those who find the traditional version a bit too sweet, the Signature Chocolate Brownies are an excellent alternative—rich, fudgy, and decadent, they have earned their own devoted following over the decades. If you are visiting during the Jewish holidays, their Schnecken and Hamantaschen are considered some of the best in the city, frequently resulting in lines that stretch around the block.
For special occasions like weddings or large celebrations, the bakery is highly sought after for its custom cakes. However, a helpful tip for those placing large custom orders: communication is key. To ensure your order is perfect, it is best to call and speak directly with a manager to confirm your pickup window and design details, as the high volume of orders means phone confirmation is more reliable than email. When you pick up your order, especially for delicate items like iced cookies, it is always a good practice to double-check the presentation before leaving the shop. This ensures that the high-quality product you expect—and that William Greenberg is famous for—arrives at your venue in pristine condition. Whether it’s a single cookie for a snack or eighty for a wedding, a visit to this Madison Avenue landmark is a delicious journey through New York history.

Ordered 80 cookies for my wedding. Cookies were fantastic and were loved by guests, however many had their icing smudged a bit. If you order from here, please make sure to triple check what you want with the bakery. I called three times, each time to confirm what I wanted and timeline for when I wanted to pick it up. I received exactly what I wanted, but the bakery assumed the incorrect pickup window after confirming three times on the phone and email. The bakery was nice enough to deliver the cookies for free to my wedding venue later in the day due to this. I assume the icing was smudged a bit due to the cookies not being able to dry due to the miscommunication about pickup time. Do not email the bakery. You will not get a response. I have been wanting a receipt for my purchase and still have not Received one after asking multiple times. Overall, the bakery was nice to work with, but communication between employees/ management checking email and communicating to the customer can be improved. I would swing by again for a black and white cookie.

They have a small outdoor seating area that I really liked, but the cookies weren’t quite my style. They were just a bit too sweet for me, especially the white side.

I recently visited after my mom told me some family lore about William Greenberg’s. Apparently, in the 60s and 70s, my grandma used to fly with boxes of their treats to Puerto Rico upon request of a friend that used to live in New York. It seems like every New Yorker with generations of lore has something to say about William Greenberg’s. My neighbor says it’s where his mother bought his Bar Mitzvah cake and says that he sends their famous chocolate cake whenever the occasion arises. Going there feels like stepping back in time from the moment you see their retro red and white exterior. But most impressive to me were the BEST BLACK AND WHITE COOKIES I’ve ever had. And I’m not even usually a fan. But the cookie is light and flaky, and the icing has just the right amount of give before melting away in your mouth. And they come in super cute colors? I ate four immediately. They also have vegan options!

Yum cookies and supporting a long time local business! This place is such a treat, service was really great and helpful and I tried a mini black and white cookie, linzer cookie and a mini pecan roll. Conveniently located near the park and museum too. I'll be back to try more! The black and white cookie was legit, need to try the red velvet one!

Really one of the most “correct” black and white cookies available. Lacks almond extract but otherwise the textures, construction, and flavors are perfect.
