Bagels & Schmear, located at 116 E 28th St, stands as a cornerstone of the New York breakfast experience. This central location makes it an ideal stop for those working in the NoMad district or residents living in the nearby residential towers of Kips Bay and Murray Hill. The storefront is easily recognizable and maintains a bustling presence that reflects its popularity within the community.
Accessibility via public transportation is excellent. The shop is just steps away from the 28th Street subway station, served by the 6 train, making it a breeze for commuters traveling along the Lexington Avenue line to hop off and grab a meal. Additionally, several major bus routes traverse the nearby avenues, providing multiple points of entry for those coming from different parts of Manhattan. For those on foot, the shop is a pleasant walk from Madison Square Park and the Flatiron District. While the shop is primarily designed for high-volume takeout to accommodate the busy New York lifestyle, it does offer a thin wall table equipped with stools, allowing for a quick and convenient dine-in experience for those who wish to enjoy their meal immediately.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Bagels & Schmear, the sheer variety of options can be overwhelming, but certain items consistently stand out as must-try selections. For the purist, a warm, plain, or everything bagel with a standard cream cheese schmear allows the quality of the dough and the baking process to truly shine. The bagels here are notably large, making them a very satisfying and value-driven choice for a meal that will keep you fueled throughout the morning.
However, for those looking for a more "dynamic" flavor profile, the light chive cream cheese combined with fresh sprouts and tomatoes is highly recommended. This combination has been described as exceptionally fresh and bright, providing a satisfying crunch and a savory depth without feeling overly heavy. It is a perfect example of how the shop balances traditional staples with fresh, modern ingredients. Additionally, if you are a fan of texture, their bagels offer a specific "pillowy yet dense" quality that is rare to find done correctly. The pastries should not be overlooked either; the beautiful display of sweets often features seasonal items that pair perfectly with their hot coffee. Whether you prefer a savory lox sandwich or a simple bagel with a generous layer of flavored schmear, the freshness of the ingredients ensures that every choice is a quality one. For the best experience, aim to visit during the morning hours when the bagels are at their peak temperature, fresh out of the oven.

Five Stars – The Perfect New York Morning Bagels & Schmear is exactly how a morning in New York should begin. Absolute perfection. The bagels were fresh out of the oven, still warm and lightly steaming when sliced. You can taste the difference immediately. Crisp on the outside, soft and perfectly chewy on the inside. This is the real deal. I ordered the light chive with sprouts and tomatoes, and it was dynamic. The balance was spot on. Fresh, bright, flavorful, and satisfying without being heavy. Everything tasted made that morning because it was. The selection is impressive. A huge variety of bagels and pastries, all displayed beautifully. There is a steady flow of people coming through, which is always a good sign. Busy, but not chaotic. Just the right energy. The staff was friendly, efficient, and welcoming. No attitude, no rush, just professional and upbeat. All five stars across the board. If you want a proper New York start to your day, this is it.

I was happy that the bagel was on the large side! It was very pillowy, yet dense and chewy. Texture was just right for a NY bagel but something fell short with me, that the bagel overall was a bit too dry. Boyfriend enjoyed it. There’s a thin wall table with stools that allow for a dine-in experience.

$5.39 got an egg bagel untoasted with strawberry cream cheese. Was in and out quickly. The bagel was fine but expensive given they hardly gave any cream cheese and it was clumpy/curdly. Not sure why the reviews here are so high, I was excited for this one!

I’ve only gotten two types of bagels orders. The pictures below are egg everything bagels with in house made veggie cream cheese! Delicious 😋😋😋 I’ve also had their house special which is lox with cream cheese and capers on an egg everything bagel! That was good too 😋 but for $16, that will be a treat

The bagels were very good, we got the house special and a vegetable cream cheese one. I think the house special was expensive ($15) in comparison to their other bagels. But it was very good, I loved that the capers were so mild.
