Apollo Bagels Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the evolving landscape of New York City’s breakfast scene, Apollo Bagels has quickly risen from a buzzy pandemic pop-up to a permanent neighborhood staple. Located at 416 3rd Ave, this "new-school" bagel shop is reimagining the traditional New York staple through the lens of artisanal sourdough fermentation. While many local spots stick to the classic high-density boil-and-bake method, Apollo has captured the city's attention by focusing on a naturally leavened dough that results in a lighter, tangier, and significantly crunchier product. It is a destination that appeals to both the lifelong bagel enthusiast and the modern foodie looking for a more complex flavor profile.
The vibe at Apollo Bagels is intentionally minimal and streamlined, reflecting a commitment to doing a few things exceptionally well rather than offering an overwhelming menu. The shop has become a focal point of the Murray Hill and Kips Bay community, often identifiable by a lively line of patrons that stretches out the door—a testament to its "cult status" in the 10016 zip code. Despite the crowds, the operation is remarkably fast and efficient, maintaining a friendly and upbeat energy that makes the wait feel like part of the authentic Manhattan experience. For those seeking a 10/10 combination of value and quality, this shop delivers a polished, modern take on a centuries-old tradition.
Location and Accessibility
Apollo Bagels is situated at 416 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10016, placing it in the heart of the Murray Hill market. This central Manhattan location makes it an ideal stop for those residing in the nearby luxury apartments or for professionals commuting into Midtown South. The shop occupies a clean, modern retail space that stands out on 3rd Avenue with its stylish branding and high-visibility storefront. It serves as a perfect anchor for a neighborhood that has seen a recent influx of artisanal food and beverage concepts.
Accessibility via public transportation is excellent. The shop is just a few blocks away from the 33rd Street subway station, which is served by the 6 train, and is also within walking distance of the 28th Street station. For those traveling by bus, the M101, M102, and M103 lines run directly along 3rd and Lexington Avenues, providing frequent service to the area. For those navigating the city on foot, it is a pleasant walk from landmarks like the Flatiron Building or Madison Square Park. While the shop is primarily designed for takeout and features a "grab-and-go" layout, there is limited interior seating consisting of stools by the large front window, offering a bright spot to enjoy your meal while watching the rhythm of the city outside.

Features / Highlights
What sets Apollo Bagels apart is a specific set of characteristics that define their "new-school" approach. Notable highlights include:
- Shatteringly Crisp Exterior: The hallmark of an Apollo bagel is its extra crunchy, blistered crust that provides a satisfying contrast to the soft center.
- Signature Sourdough Tang: The use of naturally fermented dough provides a noticeable, complex sourdough taste that distinguishes it from grocery-store or traditional deli bagels.
- Silky Smoked Salmon: Unlike standard "brine-soaked" lox, the shop uses premium smoked salmon paired with capers, red onion, dill, and olive oil.
- Fresh Vine-Ripe Tomatoes: The shop is highly praised for using high-quality, flavorful tomatoes that elevate even a simple cream cheese order.
- Minimalist Menu: By focusing on just three bagel types—Plain, Sesame, and Everything—the shop ensures every item is served at peak quality.
- Friendly and Helpful Staff: The team is known for being extremely welcoming and professional, contributing to a pleasant and upbeat customer experience.
- Modern Packaging: Sandwiches are often served in boxes with the slices facing up, making them much easier to eat on the go without the filling squishing out.

What is worth choosing
When you visit Apollo Bagels, the Bagel with Smoked Salmon is an absolute must-try. It is a masterclass in composition, layering silky salmon with a perfect amount of cream cheese, zesty red onion, capers, fresh dill, and a drizzle of olive oil. For those who appreciate the simpler things, the Everything Bagel with Scallion Cream Cheese and Tomato is a fan favorite; the acidity of their premium tomatoes cuts through the richness of the schmear and complements the sourdough tang of the bagel perfectly.
If you have a sweet tooth in the morning, the Bagel with Butter and Jam is surprisingly delicious and highly recommended by regulars. It highlights the texture of the toasted sourdough without the weight of heavy spreads. Additionally, for the vegan community in Murray Hill, the Vegan Cream Cheese is a high-quality alternative that holds up well against the crunchy bagel exterior. Because the shop is known for its "shatteringly crisp" texture, these bagels are at their absolute best when eaten immediately after purchase. If you’re visiting on a weekend, don’t be intimidated by a line out the door—the operation moves quickly, and that first bite of a warm, sourdough sesame bagel is well worth the 15-minute wait. For a complete local experience, pair your bagel with their fresh Ginger Lemonade for a bright, zesty contrast to your savory breakfast.

Apollo Bagels Reviews
-
I decided to give the new neighborhood Apollo Bagels a try. Very good bagel. Extra crispy exterior and noticeable sourdough taste. Not an excessive amount of cream cheese, which is good. And the coffee is decent, if unremarkable. The only available seats are stools by the window and it is a million degrees with the sun shining in! Very friendly staff and overall quite a pleasant experience.

Incredible bagels, were a bit crunchier than I would have liked them but to be honest it really went well with the schemer and tomatoes. Boyfriend had the butter and jam bagel and that was delicious as well. They had a line out the door but went fast with their operation. Was probably a 15 min wait with over 50 people in line. Overall — 10/10, great value and quality.

I had a bagel for breakfast, it was really good! Fresh and crunchy, lovely tomatoes on top, well seasoned. The place is quite simple but clean and spacious; there are not many seats.
