Beard Papa's Introduce
In a city brimming with iconic desserts, from the heavy-hitting cheesecakes to the towering cookies of the Upper West Side, Beard Papa's has carved out a unique and beloved niche. Known globally as the purveyor of "the world’s best cream puffs," this Japanese-founded bakery chain brings a sense of whimsy and precision to 2167 Broadway. For New Yorkers navigating the vibrant streets between 76th and 77th Streets, the cheerful yellow logo and the scent of baking choux pastry serve as an irresistible invitation. Whether you are a longtime fan who first discovered them on the West Coast or a curious local looking for a light yet decadent treat, Beard Papa's offers a specialized dessert experience that emphasizes freshness and high-quality ingredients.
The concept behind Beard Papa's is elegantly simple yet technically demanding. Unlike traditional cream puffs that can often become soggy, these puffs utilize a double-layered puff shell. The interior is a soft, airy choux, while the exterior is a pie-crust layer that provides a distinct, satisfying crunch. This structural integrity is vital because every puff is filled to order. This commitment to "filling on the spot" ensures that the pastry remains crisp while the custard stays chilled and velvety. It is this dedication to the science of texture that has allowed Beard Papa's to maintain a loyal following in the competitive Manhattan bakery landscape for years.
Location and Accessibility
Beard Papa's is perfectly situated at 2167 Broadway, New York, NY 10024, USA. Located in the heart of the Upper West Side, the bakery is nestled in one of the city’s most walkable and family-friendly neighborhoods. Its position on Broadway makes it a convenient stop for those spending a day at the American Museum of Natural History or the New-York Historical Society, both of which are just a few blocks away. It is also an ideal destination for residents looking for a post-dinner treat after dining at the numerous restaurants that line this historic avenue.
Accessibility is a major highlight for this location. It is exceptionally well-served by the New York City subway system. The 79th Street station, serving the 1 local train, is just two blocks north, while the 72nd Street express station (serving the 1, 2, and 3 trains) is a short five-minute walk to the south. Additionally, the M104 bus runs directly along Broadway, dropping passengers off nearly at the storefront’s doorstep. For those coming from the East Side, the M79-SBS crosstown bus provides a quick link through Central Park, making this sweet treat accessible to a wide swathe of Manhattanites. The establishment itself is known for being clean and well-organized, offering a quick service model that respects the fast-paced nature of New York life.
Services Offered
Beard Papa's provides a focused and efficient range of services designed to deliver the freshest possible dessert experience:
- Made-to-Order Filling: Every cream puff shell is filled with fresh custard only at the moment of purchase to ensure maximum crispness.
- Customizable Combinations: Customers can choose their shell type (such as original, chocolate, or honey butter) and pair it with a variety of cream fillings.
- Bulk Purchase Discounts: The bakery offers tiered pricing for larger orders, including a $1 discount on a half-dozen (6 puffs) and a $3 discount on a full dozen (12 puffs).
- Miniature Selections: For those who want to sample multiple flavors or are looking for a lighter snack, assorted mini puffs are frequently available.
- Beverage Service: A selection of hot and cold beverages is offered to complement the sweetness of the pastry shells.
- Specialty Flavors: Alongside the classic vanilla, the shop features rotating and seasonal flavors such as Green Tea (Matcha), Chocolate, and Strawberry.
- Takeaway Packaging: Carefully designed boxes and bags that protect the delicate puffs during transit, making them a popular choice for host gifts or office treats.
Features and Highlights
Several key features define the Beard Papa's experience on the Upper West Side and contribute to its reputation as a "must-visit" spot:
- Signature Double-Layered Shell: The unique combination of choux and pie crust creates a texture that is both crisp and light.
- Adorable Branding: The store’s "Beard Papa" character and bright yellow aesthetic make for a welcoming and "adorable" environment that appeals to all ages.
- High-Volume Quality Control: Despite being a popular chain, the Broadway location is noted for its cleanliness and the consistent quality of its fresh-baked shells.
- Gourmet Fillings: The custard is made with real vanilla beans and premium ingredients, resulting in a rich, non-artificial flavor profile.
- Size and Value: While priced around $3.50 per puff, many customers note that the puffs are "HUGE" and offer a substantial serving size compared to standard pastries.
- Efficient Service: Wait times are generally short, and the staff is trained to fill puffs rapidly, making it an excellent option for those on the go.

What is Worth Choosing
When ordering at Beard Papa's, the absolute "classic" choice is the Original Shell with Vanilla Custard. This is the item that built the brand’s global reputation; the flecks of real vanilla bean in the chilled cream provide a sophisticated flavor that isn't overly sugary. For those looking for something a bit more indulgent, the Chocolate-Dipped Shell paired with vanilla or chocolate cream is a perennial favorite.
If you are lucky enough to visit when it is in stock, the Green Tea (Matcha) cream puff is highly recommended. It offers an earthy, slightly bitter counterpoint to the sweet pastry that many local enthusiasts "look forward to" having. For fans of fruity flavors, the Blueberry Cheesecake puff is a standout choice that has received glowing reviews for its creamy and slightly tart profile.
For those who are undecided or wish to share, the "assorted mini ones" are worth choosing as they allow you to experience the variety of shells and fillings in a single box. Regardless of which flavor you select, keep an eye out for discounts on half-dozen or dozen purchases, as these delicious puffs tend to disappear quickly once you get them home. Whether you are a first-time visitor using a Groupon or a lifelong fan, a trip to this Broadway gem for a "freakin delicious" cream puff is a quintessential Upper West Side afternoon activity.

I saw this store advertised on Groupon and made sure to visit when I was in the area. I'm happy to say that I was not disappointed. The store and logo are adorable, and while 3.50 isn't cheap for a cream puff, these things are delicious and HUGE. There is also a $1 discount on 6 and a $3 discount if you purchase a dozen puffs. I can't wait to visit again and try the rest of the flavors as well as the beverages.

Loved Beard Papa's since I lived in San Francisco. Over the years, I've noticed the cream puffs had gotten smaller (unless it's just this small in NYC but I would think they'd keep it consistent). They're still freakin delicious though. The wait at the location wasn't very long but then again I was the only chrome m customer here when I ordered. Clean establishment. They were out of the green tea cream puffs unfortunately and I was looking forward to having those. Got a chocolate one, assorted mini ones, and this blueberry cheesecake one for the boyfriend (he loved it). I would go back to get a chance at that green tea one.

I guess in Japan, cream puffs are made by old bearded men. If you have never had one, you should definitely try one. Its really good. I like the original and the double chocolate. The staffs are normally friendly. Service with a smile. They recently renovated and made the front smaller. I hate it. There's less seating and overall just feels like customer seating is a second thought. Is 1 cream puff worth $3.50 before tax? The answer is no. A donut is +/- $1.50. So value wise it's just meh... But it's delicious and you'll keep coming back for more. Food Star - Yes Service Star - Yes Price Star - No Environment Star - yes Overall Impression Star - Yes Total: 4 Star

Excellent cream puffs. The shell is perfectly crisp and the cream tasty and not overly sweet. Maybe it's just me, but I would have liked less cream as a small part of my cream puff was soggy and a lot of the cream was left in the package. I also wished the store didn't smell so much like wipped eggs.

Always excited when I have a reason to stop in! Freshly filled cream puffs to order, I'm a huge fan of the green tea, but wouldn't say no to any of them. Best eaten shortly after purchase, just like most cream filled pastry it is prone to getting a soggy bottom the longer they wait.
