Levain Bakery Introduce
In the quiet, brownstone-lined streets of the Upper West Side, there is a culinary landmark that has transitioned from a local secret to an international phenomenon. Levain Bakery, located at 167 West 74th Street, is the birthplace of what many consider to be the greatest cookie in New York City—and perhaps the world. Founded in 1995 by Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald, this subterranean shop began as a small bread bakery. However, it was their creation of a massive, high-energy chocolate chip walnut cookie, designed to fuel their triathlon training, that ultimately captured the heart of the city. Today, the 74th Street location remains a "must-visit spot" for anyone seeking an authentic, high-quality New York dessert experience.
The experience of visiting this specific Levain location is unique compared to its more modern outposts. As you approach the storefront, you are greeted by the intoxicating scent of toasted nuts and melting chocolate wafting up from the sidewalk. Descending a few stairs into the cozy, sunken bakery, you enter a space where the atmosphere is thick with the warmth of active ovens and the bustle of a dedicated team. Despite the immense social media hype that surrounds the brand, the 74th Street shop maintains a grounded, neighborhood feel. It is a place where the "product is always freshly baked," and the friendly, welcoming staff ensure that the experience lives up to the reputation. Whether you are a resident of the 10023 zip code or a visitor crossing the park, this bakery offers a tangible slice of Manhattan’s culinary history.
Location and Accessibility
Levain Bakery is situated at 167 West 74th Street, New York, NY 10023, nestled between Amsterdam Avenue and Columbus Avenue. This prime Upper West Side location is exceptionally convenient for those exploring the cultural heart of the West Side. It is just a short walk from iconic landmarks such as the American Museum of Natural History, the Beacon Theatre, and the sprawling greenery of Central Park. For many locals, a trip to Levain is a standard part of a weekend stroll or a post-museum treat.
Regarding public transportation, the bakery is highly accessible via several major subway lines. It is only a few blocks away from the 72nd Street station, which serves the 1, 2, and 3 express and local trains, as well as the 72nd Street station for the B and C lines. This connectivity makes it an easy detour for commuters traveling from anywhere in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or the Bronx. While the shop is small and located down a short flight of stairs, the staff is known for their efficiency in managing the lines that often form outside. For those with limited time, the bakery’s proximity to major avenues ensures that ride-share and taxi access is seamless, allowing you to grab your warm cookies and continue your journey through the city.

What is Worth Choosing
When visiting the 74th Street location, the undisputed champion of the menu is the **Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookie**. This is the "original" that made Levain a household name—a massive, mountainous creation packed with semi-sweet chocolate chips and hearty walnut chunks. It is famous for its contrasting textures: a golden, slightly crunchy shell and a middle that remains soft and doughy. For chocolate purists, the **Triple Chocolate with Dark Chocolate** is an "incredible" alternative, offering a deep, rich cocoa flavor that is perfectly balanced and satisfying.
To truly elevate your visit, choosing a **Specialty Coffee** to go with your cookie is highly recommended. The bitterness of a well-pulled espresso or a smooth latte acts as the perfect foil to the sweetness of the dough. While the cookies are the main draw, don't overlook their savory breads; a fresh **Baguette** or a piece of their **Cinnamon Brioche** provides a different but equally artisanal experience. If you are sharing with a partner, ordering one cookie and a coffee to go is a classic New York move. No matter what you select, the combination of "best smells" and the "amazing product" ensures that your stop at Levain Bakery will be a highlight of your time on the Upper West Side.

I took my girlfriend to try what are, in my opinion, the best cookies in all of New York, and it was an absolute success. We went there mainly because of the social media hype and, surprisingly, it was 100% worth it. The cookies are always freshly baked, warm, and perfectly thick on the inside. We tried the original cookie and the triple chocolate with dark chocolate, both of them incredible and exactly as good as everyone says. We also had a specialty coffee to go with them, which was a great match and very enjoyable. On top of the amazing product, the staff is always friendly and welcoming, which makes the experience even better. A must-visit spot if you’re in New York, especially if you love good cookies. Highly recommended.

We had to stop in and try the famous chocolate chip and walnut cookie. This cookie is famous for a reason. Crisp on the outside and warm and gooey on the inside. And huge, we ordered one to share. The bakery is super cool, you walk down a few stairs down into the bakery and are met with the best smells! So glad we gave it a try, I would definitely recommend!

Levain is a New York staple and gem! I loved stumbling upon this little location in the Upper West Side of such a beloved NY bakery. I got the pumpkin spice bread and it was incredible! The slice was huge and only $5! Can’t wait to go back and try more treats and grab some coffee. Loved it and highly recommend!

Loved these!!! We were looking for amazing ny cookies and tried levain. Honestly these taste amazing and have only good things to say, very chewy, nice flavors and cute store! We asked them to heat the cookies and I feel like this is a MUST. I recommend to share the cookies with more people because they are very big. We tried the levain cookie, the double chocolate (which is very similar) and the seasonal cookie that had dark chocolate and cinnamon! So so good. These are also nice reheated. A bit expensive considering these are cookies but everything in nyc is. Try it with a friend!!!

Hands down the best cookies I’ve ever had. Every single one was unreal. The coconut chocolate chip was perfectly chewy, the PB chocolate was rich and balanced, the classic chocolate chip was flawless, and the double chocolate was next level indulgent. Fresh, soft, packed with flavor, and clearly made with care. If you like cookies, this place is a must. I’d come back just for these alone.
