Kossar's Bagels & Bialys Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For anyone living in or visiting the Upper West Side of Manhattan, the search for the perfect bagel is a serious pursuit. Among the historic brownstones and bustling avenues, Kossar's Bagels & Bialys stands as a true neighborhood staple and a total gem. While many spots claim the title of "authentic," Kossar's carries a weight of tradition that few can match, serving as a pillar of New York’s rich Jewish culinary heritage. This isn't just a place to grab a quick breakfast; it is a destination for those who appreciate the craft of old-world baking. Whether you are a local resident looking for your daily morning fix or a traveler checking off a culinary bucket list, this shop provides a quintessential New York experience that is both delicious and deeply rooted in the city's history.
Kossar's is perhaps most famous for being a standard-bearer for the bialy—a traditional bread that is often overshadowed by the bagel but held in high esteem by true New Yorkers. However, their expansion into the Upper West Side at the 72nd Street location has allowed them to showcase a full range of classic treats, from perfectly boiled and baked bagels to their world-renowned chocolate babka. The atmosphere inside is friendly and professional, managing to feel both modern and timeless. It is a place where the staff is known for their kindness, often going above and beyond to ensure customers leave with a smile and a bag full of warm, fresh-baked goods. For fans of classic television like Seinfeld or those simply looking for a taste of the real Manhattan, Kossar's is a must-visit institution.
Location and Accessibility
Kossar's Bagels & Bialys is conveniently located at 270 W 72nd St, New York, NY 10023, USA. This prime Upper West Side location makes it incredibly accessible for locals and visitors alike. Situated on 72nd Street, one of the neighborhood's most iconic thoroughfares, the shop is just a stone's throw away from major transit hubs. The 1, 2, and 3 subway lines stop at the 72nd Street station, which is practically at the shop's doorstep, making it an easy commute from anywhere in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or the Bronx. Its proximity to Riverside Park and Central Park also makes it the ideal starting point for a weekend stroll or a picnic in the grass.
Accessibility is a key feature of this location. Unlike many tiny, "hole-in-the-wall" bagel spots in the city, this shop offers a welcoming interior that provides a respite from the elements. New York winters can be harsh, and having a warm, clean place with seating to enjoy a toasted bagel and a hot coffee is a significant advantage for local users. The storefront is easy to find and maintains a clean, professional appearance that fits perfectly into the vibrant aesthetic of the Upper West Side. Whether you are arriving by foot, bike, or subway, the shop is positioned to serve as a convenient community hub for high-quality baked goods.

What is worth choosing
Deciding what to order at a place with so much history can be a challenge, but there are a few standout items that define the Kossar's experience. For the quintessential savory breakfast, the everything bagel is a top-tier choice. Customers rave about the "everything" seasoning paired with a generous schmear of creamy salmon and shallot cream cheese. The combination is described as incredible, with the savory notes of the shallots perfectly complementing the richness of the salmon. If you prefer something with a bit of a twist, the everything pumpernickel bagel—especially when toasted—offers a deeper, earthier flavor profile that pairs wonderfully with their sweet walnut raisin cream cheese.
Beyond the bagels, the chocolate babka is an absolute must-try. It is frequently described as "scrumptious" and "incredible," representing the gold standard of this traditional Jewish dessert. It is worth getting a full loaf to take home, but even a single slice is enough to understand why it is world-famous. For a lighter treat or a nod to New York's dessert culture, the black and white cookie is another excellent choice, perfectly balanced in its frosting and soft in its base. No matter what you choose, the freshness of the bread is the common denominator that makes every item worth the trip. If you find yourself on the Upper West Side, make sure to add Kossar's to your bucket list; it is a delicious slice of New York history that lives up to the hype.

This place is a staple in the Upper West Side of Manhattan! It is also a total gem and a must go, super authentic and delicious! I took everything Togo and they were so sweet to me. They even sent me with a totally scrumptious and fresh slice of their famous chocolate babka to try and it was incredible. Everything I wanted it to be and more, I also got a black and white cookie to extra celebrate my Seinfeld fandom. Add this place to your bucket list and make a point to go! I enjoyed so much their everything bagel with a schmear of their creamy salmon and shallots, omg my mouth is watering again even thinking about it. It was incredible and I cannot wait to go back to New York and run to Kossar’s because it seriously was so good. Thank you so much for all the treats and the bonus bread, I loved all of it and the experience was wonderful!

I only got a bagel and cream cheese. So I can't comment on the menu at large. However service was good, quick and polite. I had a everything pumpernickel bagel toasted with the walnut raisin cream cheese. And a coffee. Both were great. Bagels was definitely fresh. This place also has seating which is nice especially in cold and snowy weather.

Kossars on West End Avenue and 72nd Street is worth visiting, especially if you’re hungry. I love their bialys and they also have delicious cream cheese spreads. However, recently Kossar’s Black and White Cookies ( $4.95) were rated among the top 3 in NYC! Naturally, I had to buy one and it’s definitely pheny!

Definately my favourite bagel place in the neighborhood. I tried both take out and dine in. The quality of the food is great, tons of cream cheese options! the restaurant has a few tables, they are quite small. It gets BUSY quickly, so finding a spot in rush hours isn't always easy. I've seen the line wrapping around the corner but they are also very fast. They have another location as well in UWS, and I once placed my order for pickup in the wrong location and they managed it internally and still gave me my lunch. Absolutely love this place.

Perfect spot for a bagel and watching the world go by in UWS. So much choice! Great service, didn't wait too long. Loved the fresh orange juice by the register as well.
