Michaeli Bakery Introduce
In the quiet, residential stretches of the Upper East Side, tucked away from the high-traffic avenues, lies a culinary gem that has rapidly become a neighborhood essential. Michaeli Bakery, located at the corner of East 90th Street, represents a masterful blend of classical European pastry techniques and the vibrant, soulful flavors of Israeli baking. Founded by Adir Michaeli—a pastry chef whose reputation preceded him from some of the city’s most famous kitchens—this bakery has established itself as a destination for those who seek authenticity, precision, and warmth in every bite. For local residents in the New York region, discovering this shop often feels like uncovering a well-kept secret, one that reveals itself through the irresistible aroma of butter and yeast wafting down the block.
The atmosphere inside Michaeli Bakery is one of industrious charm. Unlike the large, cavernous commercial bakeries found in Midtown, this space feels intimate and personal. When you step through the door, you are immediately greeted by the sight of tray after tray of freshly baked goods, often still warm from the oven. It is a functional, professional kitchen that happens to have a retail counter, allowing customers to see the craft in action. From the perspective of a local New Yorker, it offers a refreshing alternative to over-engineered "concept" shops; here, the focus remains strictly on the quality of the bake. The friendly yet professional service reinforces this neighborhood vibe, making it a place where regulars are recognized and newcomers are welcomed with genuine enthusiasm.
Location and Accessibility
Michaeli Bakery is situated at 401 E 90th St, New York, NY 10128, USA. This location puts it in the heart of Yorkville, a section of the Upper East Side known for its strong community feel and historical ties to European immigrant populations. The bakery occupies a corner spot that is easy to miss from the outside if you aren't looking for it, which only adds to its "hidden gem" appeal. Its proximity to the East River Esplanade and Carl Schurz Park makes it an ideal stop for those planning a morning walk or a weekend picnic by the water.
For those navigating the city via public transportation, the bakery is highly accessible. It is a short walk from the 86th Street and 96th Street stations on the Q line (Second Avenue Subway), as well as the 4, 5, and 6 trains at the 86th Street Lexington Avenue station. Multiple bus routes, including the M15 and M86-SBS, serve the immediate area, making it a convenient detour for commuters. For locals with a more stationary morning, the bakery offers a couple of cozy counter seats inside for a quick espresso and pastry, while benches located just outside provide a perfect spot to enjoy the neighborhood atmosphere during the warmer months. The sidewalk access is clean and pedestrian-friendly, reflecting the quiet, upscale character of the 10128 zip code.

Features / Highlights
What defines the Michaeli Bakery experience are the specific highlights that set its products apart in a city saturated with options. These features underscore the bakery's commitment to artisan quality and unique flavor profiles:
- Artisanal Flakiness: The bakery is renowned for its croissant dough, which is consistently described as crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, achieving the "perfect" lamination.
- Unique Flavor Balancing: Unlike many American bakeries, Michaeli often leans into a sophisticated, slightly salty profile for their plain croissants, providing a savory depth that balances the richness of the butter.
- Chef-Driven Quality: Under the guidance of Adir Michaeli, every item undergoes a rigorous standard of preparation, ensuring that "trays and trays" of pastries remain consistent in quality.
- Visual Abundance: The open layout allows customers to see the volume and variety of what is being baked, creating a sensory experience that starts visually.
- Neighborhood Charm: Despite its high culinary standards, the bakery remains unpretentious, serving as a genuine community hub for Yorkville residents.
- Savory Specialties: Beyond sweets, their "spicy cheese sticks" and other savory bakes provide a diverse menu that caters to different times of the day.
- Freshness Guarantee: The high turnover and on-site baking mean that items are frequently replenished, often arriving at the counter while still radiating heat.

What is worth choosing
Navigating the menu at Michaeli Bakery is a journey through textures and tastes, but there are certain staples that are absolutely worth choosing for any first-time visitor or returning regular. The croissants are the undisputed stars of the show. If you appreciate a traditional bake, the plain croissant is a must; its flaky, salty, and buttery profile makes it "simply irresistible." For those who prefer a classic pairing, the chocolate croissant is a favorite among the local crowd, offering a rich but not overwhelming cocoa center. However, the almond croissant is the standout choice for many, lauded for its delicious filling and perfect crunch.
Beyond the French-style pastries, it is highly worth exploring the items that highlight the bakery's Israeli heritage. Their babka—available in chocolate and cinnamon—is frequently cited as some of the best in New York City, featuring a moist, dense crumb and intense flavor. If you are in the mood for something savory, the spicy cheese sticks are a neighborhood favorite, offering a satisfying crunch and a subtle heat that makes them a perfect afternoon snack. Because the shop can be easy to miss from the outside, we recommend keeping a sharp eye out for the corner entrance on 90th Street. Whether you choose to take your treats to a nearby park bench or enjoy them at the counter, selecting a mix of their flaky croissants and savory sticks ensures a complete and highly satisfying experience that represents the very best of Upper East Side baking.
In conclusion, Michaeli Bakery is more than just a neighborhood stop; it is a testament to the power of high-quality, artisan baking. By combining a professional's eye for detail with a friendly, local spirit, Adir Michaeli and his team have created a space that enriches the New York culinary landscape. We invite you to visit, breathe in the aroma of fresh pastry, and discover why this Yorkville gem is a must-visit for anyone who truly loves bread and pastry.

Had no idea this French bakery was in the neighborhood until just recently. When you walk in, you’ll see trays and trays of freshly baked pastries. This time I just tried the croissants. The plain croissants were flaky I have to wear a little more on the salty side rather than the subtle sweetness, you could get from other places. The almond croissant was delicious.

Amazing bakery! The croissants are flaky and crunchy and soft on the inside. Simply irresistible! Easy to miss from the outside. A couple counter seats inside and benches outside. Super delicious though. The plain croissants, chocolate croissants and spicy cheese sticks were our favourites!

We stopped in for breakfast and ordered a Danish cheese and chocolate croissant. They were both airy and flaky and so delicious with just the right amount of filling. The service was fast and friendly and the store was clean. It was a little tight with our stroller, but I would let that stop you. We were able to get in and out pretty easily.

Wonderful place! A gem in the city. High quality baked goods. I very much enjoy savory pastries so feta and cheese roll was something else. I came in early enough to get it warm freshly out of the oven. Coffee is great too!

This bakery is on 90th Street, just off of 1st Avenue. There is a blackboard outside with the bakery's name on the sidewalk. It is a very popular bakery, and is open every day except on Saturdays. I tried their cherry-pistachio croissant which I felt had little flavor of those two ingredients. Its main flavor, I felt, was that of sugar. It was good, but I expected to taste more cherries, and recognize its flavor of pistachio when I ate it, which I did not. This review's three star food rating is based on that croissant only.
