Butterdose Introduce
In the heart of Manhattan’s East Village, where the culinary landscape is as diverse as the people who walk its streets, a small and vibrant yellow-themed bakery has been making a significant splash. Butterdose, located on East 13th Street, is a family-owned neighborhood gem that has quickly become a "must-visit" for dessert enthusiasts and coffee lovers alike. For New Yorkers, the search for a perfect pastry often leads to overpriced chains, but Butterdose offers a refreshing alternative: an independent cafe that blends French baking techniques with innovative Japanese and East Asian flavor profiles. From the moment you see the cheerful yellow exterior, it’s clear that this is a place designed to provide a "dose" of happiness through high-quality comfort food.
What sets Butterdose apart in a city saturated with bakeries is its commitment to inclusivity and creativity. The shop has gained a loyal following specifically for its attention to dietary restrictions, offering a variety of gluten-free and plant-based options that do not sacrifice flavor or texture. Whether you are a local student looking for a quiet place to study during the week or a resident seeking a sophisticated treat after dinner, the atmosphere here is consistently described as warm, clean, and welcoming. The interior, adorned with modern neon signs and minimalist decor, creates a "cozy vibe" that invites you to stay and savor your selection. In a fast-paced city, Butterdose provides a rare moment of tranquility and culinary excellence.
Location and Accessibility
Butterdose is strategically situated at 236 E 13th St, New York, NY 10003, positioned between Second and Third Avenues. This prime East Village location makes it exceptionally accessible for locals and visitors exploring Lower Manhattan. The bakery is nestled on a relatively quiet block, providing a peaceful reprieve just steps away from the high-energy corridors of the neighborhood. For those spending an afternoon at nearby Union Square or the historic St. Mark’s Place, a detour to Butterdose is both convenient and rewarding.
Public transit options are plentiful, making it easy for commuters from other boroughs to reach this sweet destination. The 3rd Ave station (L train) is just a short three-minute walk away, while the major transit hub at Union Square (4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R, W lines) is less than ten minutes on foot. Multiple bus routes, including the M14A-SBS and M15, serve the immediate vicinity. For those who prefer to travel by bike, there are several Citi Bike docks nearby. The storefront is street-level and easily accessible, and while indoor seating is intimate—accommodating about ten people—the space is well-kept and efficiently managed. It is important to note that the shop is open daily from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM, a rarity for Manhattan cafes, making it a reliable spot for both early birds and late-night dessert seekers.

What is worth choosing
When you find yourself standing before the counter at Butterdose, the cream puffs are the undisputed stars of the show. For a truly unique experience, the Lychee Rose and Goma (black sesame) flavors are highly recommended; they are described as fresh, light, and perfectly balanced without being overly sweet. If you are a fan of Japanese flavors, the Matcha and Strawberry Sakura (available seasonally) are absolute must-tries, often featuring a delicate jelly or cream filling that highlights the quality of the tea used. Note that cream puffs are typically available after 12:00 PM, so time your visit accordingly if these are your primary goal.
For those navigating a gluten-free lifestyle, the Apple Cider Donut is a revelation. Many customers recommend having the staff warm it up for you, which enhances the spices and creates a soft, freshly-baked texture that is often hard to find in gluten-free goods. On the savory side, the Pesto Biscuits are a local favorite—flaky, buttery, and a perfect pairing for their signature Brown Sugar Ginger Latte. If you’re in the mood for a refreshing drink, the Strawberry Matcha Latte is a standout, crafted with real strawberry puree and a balanced matcha flavor that isn't masked by sugar. No matter what you choose, Butterdose ensures that every bite is a testament to their "small business" heart and "big city" quality. Supporting this local establishment means not only enjoying a world-class pastry but also sustaining a piece of the authentic East Village community.
In summary, Butterdose on 13th Street is more than just a place to grab a snack; it is a destination where culinary artistry meets neighborhood warmth. From its signature cream puffs to its inclusive gluten-free menu, it offers something special for every New Yorker. Whether you are there for a brief visit or a quiet afternoon, Butterdose is guaranteed to leave a lasting, sweet impression.

This cute bakery was such a delight. They have a variety of options for people with dietary restrictions. The lady who worked inside was very helpful and sweet with explaining everything. I am gluten-free and I had plenty of options. I choose the Apple Cider donut and it was fantastic. She warmed it for me and I ate it inside. I am really looking forward to coming back to try their cream puffs.

I stopped by Butter Dose for a very short visit and had a lovely experience. We only sat down for a few minutes to enjoy two cream puffs, but everything about the place left a great impression. The pastries were absolutely delicious. one with a lychee filling and another with a goma (sesame) flavor. Both were fresh, light, and full of flavor. The space itself is beautiful, clean, and well kept, with a nice and relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer. Even though our visit was brief and focused just on enjoying the pastries, the overall vibe was warm and pleasant. It’s a great spot for a quick sweet bite, and I’d be very happy to come back again. next time also for coffee.🥰😍

Small cafe that can get crowded, but the gluten free options are fantastic. ALL the cream pups are GF, I’ll say it again… all of them. And the flavor profiles are unique and tasty. We loved the matcha strawberry and the mixed berries best.

I love love the exterior and interior of this cafe/bakery. Its so bright, warm, and welcoming. Their cream puffs are their standout items and they make unique asian flavors like yuzu, black sesam, lychee rose, ube...etc. We got one of each flavor to try and all of them were really good. They also sell other baked pastries and treats which we didn't get to try but the next time we come back we'll try them. Their presentation is top notch and everything is so aesthetically pleasing. They also have drinks from coffee to matcha. In the summer they have special drinks like fruit flavored lemonades (watermelon, mango, strawberry). They also have different matcha flavors (ube, mango, strawberry, watermelon).

The gluten free cream puffs are amazing, and I also picked up a gluten free red-velvet cookie that I still dream about. I split the cream puffs with non-gf friends and they said they couldn’t tell they were gluten free! I also got a cup of coffee, but would probably skip that next time.
