Harpers Bread House Introduce
For those navigating the vibrant and often overwhelming streets of New York City’s Chinatown, finding a true "hidden gem" is a badge of honor. Harpers Bread House, located on Grand Street, is precisely that—a steadfast institution that has served the Lower East Side community for years with an unassuming storefront and a powerhouse of flavors. While many bakeries in the area focus solely on traditional Cantonese sweets, Harpers has carved out a unique niche by blending classic Chinese pastry arts with Japanese-inspired savory snacks. This fusion has made it a daily ritual for local students, commuters, and food enthusiasts who seek high-quality, freshly made food without the inflated prices often found in more modernized parts of Manhattan.
The atmosphere at Harpers Bread House is distinctively old-school New York: efficient, no-nonsense, and consistently busy. It is a grab-and-go sanctuary where the primary focus is the product on the shelves rather than elaborate interior design. Despite its modest appearance, the bakery is frequently cited by critics and locals as one of the best spots in the city for specific items like egg tarts and rice balls. For many residents, the shop represents the authentic spirit of Chinatown—a place where quality is measured by the warmth of the bun and the value of the meal. Whether you are arriving at 7 am for a fresh breakfast or stopping by in the afternoon for a snack, the consistent quality of their offerings has built a loyalty that spans generations.
Location and Accessibility
Harpers Bread House is conveniently located at 271 Grand St, New York, NY 10002, USA. Situated in the traditional Lower East Side/Chinatown area, it sits in a corridor known for its rich culinary diversity and bustling street markets. The shop’s location makes it a perfect pitstop for those exploring the eclectic boutiques of the LES or the historic markets of Chinatown.
For those relying on the New York City Subway, the bakery is exceptionally easy to reach. It is located just a few steps away from the Grand St Station, which serves the B and D trains. Additionally, it is within a short walking distance of the Bowery Station (J and Z trains) and the Canal St Station, which provides access to a wide array of lines including the 6, N, Q, R, and W. This high level of connectivity makes it a prime location for a quick "detour" for anyone traveling through Lower Manhattan. For those on foot, the shop is a landmark in the neighborhood, easy to spot even amidst the dense activity of Grand Street.

What is Worth Choosing
If it is your first time visiting Harpers Bread House, you absolutely cannot leave without trying their onigiri. The "Kimchi Chicken" and "Teriyaki Chicken" flavors are local favorites, offering a perfect savory balance at an unbeatable price point—often around $5 for two, making it one of the best lunch deals in Manhattan. These rice balls are satisfying, portable, and always fresh.
For dessert, the "Dan Tat" (egg custard tart) is non-negotiable. Whether you choose the traditional golden custard or the Portuguese-style with its caramelized, bruleed top, you are getting a masterpiece of texture—warm, jiggly, and encased in a flaky shell. For those looking for a more substantial meal, their "Curry Chicken" buns and "Bacon Egg and Cheese" rolls are highly recommended for their generous fillings and soft, freshly baked dough. Whatever you choose, you’ll find that Harpers Bread House manages to deliver a high-quality experience that feels like a well-kept secret in the heart of the city.
In a neighborhood that is constantly evolving, Harpers Bread House remains a steadfast reminder that great food doesn't have to be expensive. It is a place where $40 can buy a feast for a family, and a single dollar can still buy one of the best pastries in New York.

Hours are 7 am-5:30 everyday I’ve been coming here for years the food is at minimum 8/10 but almost everything is delicious. Today I spent $41 on 3 curry chicken, 3 teriyaki chicken, 3 bacon egg and cheese, 2 salmon teriyaki, 2 shrimp tempura salad, 2 kimchi, 1 red yam bun. All of which were delicious. I love the fortune cookies, sweet buns and deserts.

Rating: 7/10 Date Last Visited: 1/24/2026 I ordered the egg tart ($1.50) and hot dog bun ($1.50). The egg tart was great, with a soft custard filling and crispy and flaky crust. For the price, it is very worth it. The hot dog bun was very standard, one big hot dog wrapped by bread. I would order both again, especially for the price. Most other pastries are also under $2, so I would recommend trying multiple things. This place is cash only, so make sure you bring some extra cash with you. Overall, I would recommend if you’re looking for a cheap bakery in Chinatown.

We initially came in to try the egg tarts. We got 1 of each and picked up a rice ball too. The coconut egg tart wasn’t so great. It was dry to the mouth. You need a cup of tea or coffee to help wash it down. The Portuguese egg tarts and regular egg tart was great. Nice filling and the crust was nice and flaky. There’s a large selection of the rice balls, we got the spicy salmon and it did not disappoint. Coming back to try the other flavors.
