Elly’s Pastry

282 Grand St, New York, NY 10002, USA

4.0
((4.25 stars)) Elly's Pastry of Japanese-styled fruit sandwiches has reopened inside of Wine Bar Creston, in the LES-Chinatown area. open for limited daytime hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. the fruit sandwiches are back on the menu, people! however, the small shop also offers a variety of baked items like cookies, financiers, loaf cake slices, and brownies. opted for the brownie which i really enjoyed because it was so simple and hit the spot when i wanted some calories on the go..the brownie had a nice balance of sweet (but not overly sugary) but still rich and full of chocolatey-ness in each bite. the brownie is soft but not mushy, so it's fairly dense and make for satisfying bites from start to finish. the part-time bakery offers s all menu of coffee and tea drinks. with colder weather looming, look forward to trying some of their other baked eats and pairing it with a hot caffeinated beverage. not sure, if you can sit inside the wine bar and eat and drink from Elly's menu or it is simple to-go. guess i will find out next time i pass through. definitely worth a stop if you were a fan of Elly's when it was in K-town or you are downtown and need a snacky bite on the go. - Ruwan J.

Elly’s Pastry Introduce

In the ever-evolving culinary landscape of New York City, certain gems shine brightest when they embrace a "less is more" philosophy. Elly’s Pastry is precisely that—a boutique Japanese-inspired bakery that has captured the hearts of locals with its refined simplicity and artistic approach to sweets. Recently relocated to a cozy residency within Wine Bar Creston at 282 Grand Street, Elly’s Pastry brings a touch of Tokyo’s sophisticated dessert culture to the vibrant Lower East Side and Chinatown border. This "shop-within-a-shop" concept creates a unique destination where the precision of Japanese pastry meets the rustic-chic charm of a Manhattan wine bar, offering a serene escape for those in the know.

For New Yorkers who remember Elly’s from its original presence in Koreatown, the reopening on Grand Street is a cause for celebration. The bakery is famous for its "Fruit Sandos"—Japanese-style fruit sandwiches that are as beautiful to look at as they are to eat. These are not your typical sandwiches; they are delicate constructions of fluffy milk bread, cloud-like whipped cream, and perfectly ripe, seasonal fruit. Beyond the viral sandwiches, Elly’s Pastry operates as a high-quality part-time bakery, focusing on a curated selection of baked goods that emphasize balance, texture, and a "not-too-sugary" profile that appeals to the mature New York palate. In a neighborhood known for its bold flavors and busy streets, Elly’s offers a moment of quiet, flavorful reflection.

Location and Accessibility

Elly’s Pastry is located at 282 Grand St, New York, NY 10002, USA, situated inside Wine Bar Creston. This specific block of Grand Street serves as a fascinating intersection of the historic Lower East Side and the bustling energy of Chinatown. For local residents, the shop is a staple of the 10002 area, providing a high-end snack option in a neighborhood filled with diverse culinary traditions. The bakery’s placement inside a wine bar adds an extra layer of exclusivity and "hidden gem" appeal to the visit.

Accessibility is straightforward for anyone navigating Lower Manhattan. The shop is exceptionally close to the Grand St Station, which serves the B and D subway lines, making it a quick trip for commuters from Brooklyn or Upper Manhattan. Additionally, it is within easy walking distance of the Delancey St-Essex St Station (F, M, J, Z trains) and the Bowery Station (J, Z trains). For those who enjoy a weekend stroll, the bakery is perfectly positioned for a walk through the nearby Sarah D. Roosevelt Park or a shopping trip to the boutiques of Nolita. Because it operates with limited weekend hours, it has become a highlight of the "Grand Street crawl" for local foodies who plan their Saturdays around these elusive treats.

Features and Highlights

  • Authentic Japanese Influence: Every item is crafted with the delicate sweetness and meticulous presentation characteristic of Japanese patisserie.
  • Signature Brownies: Highly praised by regulars for their "rich chocolatey-ness," dense texture, and perfectly balanced sugar levels.
  • Reasonably Priced Luxury: Despite the high quality of ingredients and labor-intensive preparation of fruit sandos, items are priced to be accessible for neighborhood locals.
  • Quiet Environment: Because the shop is tucked inside a wine bar and operates during specific daytime hours, it remains a "quiet" spot even in a busy part of the city.
  • Seasonal Fruit Rotation: The menu evolves based on the best available produce, ensuring that every fruit sandwich is at its peak flavor.
  • Handmade Quality: Each cookie and financier is baked with a visible attention to detail, moving away from the mass-produced feel of larger commercial bakeries.

What is Worth Choosing

If you are making your first pilgrimage to Elly’s Pastry at its new Grand Street home, the Fruit Sando is the undisputed "must-try" item. These sandwiches are the shop's calling card, featuring cross-sections of vibrant strawberries, kiwi, or mango encased in a thick layer of lightly sweetened cream. The texture of the milk bread is essential here—it is soft enough to yield to the bite without losing its structure, making for a truly harmonious eating experience. It is the kind of treat that feels indulgent yet remarkably light, making it a favorite for a weekend "tea time" snack.

For those who prefer something a bit more substantial or "chocolatey," the brownie is a standout choice. Local reviewers frequently highlight the brownie’s perfect balance—rich and dense without being overly sugary or "mushy." It is a satisfying, high-calorie snack that hits the spot when you are walking between galleries or shops in the Lower East Side. Additionally, do not overlook the Japanese-style cookies and financiers; these smaller bites are reasonably priced and offer a sophisticated crunch that pairs wonderfully with a hot tea or coffee. Whether you are a fan of the original K-town location or a newcomer to the Japanese fruit sandwich trend, a stop at Elly’s Pastry inside Wine Bar Creston is well worth the weekend detour. The combination of its relaxing environment and top-tier pastries ensures a 10/10 experience for any dessert lover in the New York region.
