Natalie Bakery Introduce
In the vibrant tapestry of Manhattan's Chinatown, where every street corner tells a story through aroma and tradition, Natalie Bakery stands as a steadfast guardian of authentic Cantonese baking. Located at 271 Grand St, this neighborhood fixture has long been a "go-to" for locals who prioritize taste and tradition over flashy modern aesthetics. Formerly known to long-time residents as Egg Tart King, the bakery has transitioned its name while meticulously preserving the recipes that made it famous. For New Yorkers living in the 10002 area or those commuting through the Lower East Side, Natalie Bakery represents the quintessential "hole-in-the-wall" success story: a small, focused space where the quality of the pastry speaks louder than any marketing campaign.
The atmosphere at Natalie Bakery is a reflection of the neighborhood itself—bustling, efficient, and deeply rooted in community. It is a place where the staff is noted for being exceptionally friendly and patient, a trait that stands out in the fast-paced environment of Lower Manhattan. The shop is cozy, featuring just a few seats by the window, which makes it primarily a "grab-and-go" destination for those seeking a quick breakfast or a midday snack. Despite its modest size, the bakery maintains a clean and organized display, often sealing its buns in protective packaging to ensure the highest standards of hygiene. Whether you are a local picking up a dozen tarts for a family gathering or a visitor warming up with a hot tea during a cold New York winter, the welcoming energy of Natalie Bakery makes every transaction feel personal.
Location and Accessibility are significant advantages for this Grand Street staple. Natalie Bakery is situated at 271 Grand St #231, New York, NY 10002, placing it directly across from the Grand St subway station (B and D trains). This prime location makes it perhaps the most convenient stop for commuters entering or exiting the subway system. For those traveling by bus, the M103 and M15 lines provide easy access to the surrounding blocks. While Manhattan is notoriously difficult for drivers, limited curbside parking is available along Grand Street, though locals generally recommend utilizing the excellent public transit links. Its proximity to other Chinatown landmarks and the Bowery makes it an ideal anchor point for a culinary walking tour of the district.

What is worth choosing at Natalie Bakery? The undisputed star of the menu is the Egg Tart. For those who appreciate the nuances of Chinese pastry, the tarts here are a masterclass in texture. The crust is legendary—pure, buttery, and so flaky that it "shatters" upon the first bite, a sure sign of expert lamination. The custard is perfectly balanced: light, smooth, and just the right level of sweetness. While the traditional egg tart is a must-try, the Portuguese-style (Macau) tart is equally essential, featuring a scorched, caramelized top that adds a deeper, toasted flavor profile to the eggy center.
Beyond the tarts, the savory Steamed Buns (Bao) are a favorite for the lunchtime crowd. These are consistently fresh and pillowy, with generous fillings that provide a satisfying, portable meal. For those looking for something a bit more unique, the Coconut Tarts offer a delightful tropical twist with a dense, flavorful texture that pairs beautifully with a hot milk tea. If you find yourself at the bakery during the summer months, keep an eye out for their seasonal fruit drinks; their watermelon slush has gained a loyal following for being a crisp, refreshing antidote to the city heat. Whether you are grabbing a 90-cent snack or a full box of assorted treats, Natalie Bakery proves that in the world of New York food, authenticity and value are the ultimate ingredients for success.

This place was formerly known as Egg Tart King. Not sure what's up with the name change, but I'm glad that their egg tarts have been consistently delicious all these years. In addition to the traditional egg tart, they also offer the Portuguese and egg white types. Also, can't beat the price of 90 cents/egg tart! I've also tried some of their other baked goods from time to time - all were good. Another bonus to this bakery is that every staff I've encountered is super friendly and patient, especially by Chinatown standard.

As the closest cafe to the Grand st metro station, this is a quick place to stop and get a snack or drink. Egg tarts (90 cents) come in different flavors, such as strawberry. During the summer they ran a special on watermelon slush, 2 for $3. Only a few seats by the windows so there isn't much space. In the cold winter though it's a warm spot to grab some tea and sweets.

This used to be called the Egg Tart King with good reason, the egg tarts here are consistently delicious! They have a variety of egg tart styles (Macau, flavored, regular, etc.) and they have not disappointed me yet. I prefer the regular or Macau style tarts, the flavored ones are ok. It's also across the street from the Grand St. station which makes it very convenient for a quick breakfast stop.
