Harry’s bagels Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the competitive landscape of New York City breakfast staples, Harry’s Bagels stands out as a beacon of tradition and quality. Located in the bustling Midtown Manhattan corridor, this establishment is not just another grab-and-go spot; it is a practitioner of the time-honored methods that define the "New York Bagel." For locals and commuters navigating the high-energy streets near Penn Station and Times Square, Harry’s offers a reliable anchor of flavor. The shop specializes in hand-rolled, kettle-boiled sourdough bagels, a distinction that elevates their product above the standard fare found in many modern cafes. By utilizing a naturally fermented sourdough starter, Harry’s achieves a complex flavor profile and a superior structural integrity that satisfies even the most discerning "bagel snob."
The atmosphere at Harry’s Bagels captures the quintessential New York charm—fast-paced, efficient, and unpretentious. From the moment you step inside, the aroma of fresh-baked dough and toasted onions welcomes you, providing a brief but necessary respite from the urban grind. It is a place where the staff moves with the precision of a well-oiled machine, handling the morning rush with a friendly professionalism that keeps the lines moving. Whether you are looking for a simple buttered bagel to start your workday or a towering lox sandwich for a weekend brunch, Harry’s Bagels delivers a "solid, satisfying NYC-style bagel done right."
Location and Accessibility
Harry’s Bagels is strategically situated at 520 8th Ave, New York, NY 10018, USA. This prime Midtown West location makes it exceptionally accessible for a wide variety of users. Positioned on 8th Avenue between 36th and 37th Streets, it is just a few blocks north of Pennsylvania Station, the busiest transportation hub in North America. This proximity makes it a favorite for commuters arriving via NJ Transit, Amtrak, or the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), as well as those utilizing the 1, 2, 3, A, C, and E subway lines.
For those working in the Garment District or the surrounding office towers, Harry’s is a convenient walk-to destination. Its central placement also puts it within easy reach of major landmarks like Madison Square Garden and the Hudson Yards district. The shop features a classic counter-service layout with some casual indoor seating for those who wish to enjoy their meal on-site. For many tourists staying in the numerous nearby hotels, its accessibility and "typical NYC charm" make it an ideal first stop to experience an authentic New York breakfast without straying too far from the main transit arteries.

Features / Highlights
What truly defines the Harry’s Bagels experience are the specific artisanal details and customer-centric features that make it a standout in the 8th Avenue district. Key highlights include:
- The Sourdough Edge: The use of a naturally fermented sourdough starter provides a unique tang and a "chewy center" that differentiates their bagels from the standard yeast-only varieties.
- Generous Portions: Known for their "hearty" sandwiches, Harry's is praised for layering fresh lox and meats generously, ensuring a meal that "holds you down for the day."
- Perfect Texture: Every bagel is baked to achieve a "perfect crust" with a warm, chewy interior—a hallmark of the kettle-boiling process.
- Freshness Guarantee: Bagels are baked fresh daily on-site, ensuring that the product you receive is never more than a few hours out of the oven.
- Authentic Toppings: Varieties such as the onion bagel are noted for their high-quality inclusions, like the "little fried onion bits" that add a distinct crunch and savory depth.
- Neighborhood Staple: The shop maintains a loyal following of regulars, contributing to its reputation as a "true New York institution" where locals gather.

What is Worth Choosing
When visiting Harry’s Bagels, the Lox Bagel Sandwich is an absolute must-try for anyone seeking the definitive New York experience. Specifically, ordering it on an Onion Bagel with Scallion Cream Cheese, red onions, tomatoes, and capers is a local favorite. Customers frequently rave about the "incredibly fresh" lox, which is thinly sliced and layered generously to create a sandwich that is both visually appealing and immensely satisfying. The fried onion bits on the bagel provide a textural contrast that perfectly complements the smooth, savory cream cheese.
For those seeking a hot breakfast, the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on a fresh sourdough bagel is a "good, solid" choice that never disappoints. It is the kind of hearty meal that eliminates the need for snacks until dinner time. If you are visiting with family or a spouse, do not overlook the Rugelach. These traditional pastries are a hidden gem at Harry's, often purchased as a sweet follow-up to the savory bagels. While the shop is a fantastic place for a single sandwich or a small snack, those looking to bring back a dozen for the office should be aware that flavor availability can fluctuate based on the time of day. For the best selection of their full dozen, arriving earlier in the morning is highly recommended to ensure you get your pick of all the listed sourdough varieties. Whether you're a hotel guest looking for a nearby bite or a long-time New Yorker, choosing the signature lox or a fresh cinnamon bun at Harry's is a decision your taste buds will thank you for.

Stopped here because it was close to the hotel. I had a breakfast bagel with eggs and bacon. It was good! Also got several rugelach to go as my wife loves them. I was also looking to bring back a dozen bagels for my coworkers, but decided to get elsewhere as this location did not have all listed flavors available the day I visited.

I stumbled upon this classic New York bagel shop while walking around the neighborhood and decided to stop in for a quick brunch. It had that typical NYC charm—order at the counter, a short line, and some casual seating inside (though I opted for takeout). I went with a lox bagel sandwich on an onion bagel with scallion cream cheese, topped with red onions, tomatoes, and capers. The bagel itself was warm and chewy with a perfect crust, and the little fried onion bits on top added just the right texture. The lox was incredibly fresh—thinly sliced and generously layered. The sandwich was delicious, but let me tell you—it’s hearty. One of those meals that holds you down for the day. Have one and you’re good till dinner, no snacks required. Overall, it wasn’t trying to be anything fancy—just a solid, satisfying NYC-style bagel done right.

This place has great bagels and pastries. The food is very good and super fresh. The staff are kind and get you in and out quickly. I’ll be back on my next NY trip. In my option this place is better than Liberty…but what do I know

The cinnamon raisin bagel with butter and jelly is soooooo gooood and cinnamon raisin with bacon and American cheese. The amount of bacon is insanely and delicious. The dough is very soft and chewy. The customer service is always delightful, friendly, respectful. The store is always clean smells good. I have nothing negative to say. Keep on doing what you’re doing 👍👍.
