La Gitana bakery #4 Introduce
In the vibrant, multicultural mosaic of Jackson Heights, Queens, local food enthusiasts often look for more than just a quick meal; they search for a connection to heritage. La Gitana Bakery #4, located on the lively 37th Avenue, serves as an essential hub for authentic Colombian cuisine. While the word "bakery" is in the name, this establishment is much more than a place for bread. It is a bustling counter-order restaurant and community staple where the aromas of slow-cooked stews and fresh cilantro fill the air, offering a direct culinary link to the heart of Colombia. For New Yorkers who appreciate the "no-frills" authenticity of Queens’ legendary food scene, this is a destination where the focus remains steadfastly on traditional preparation and hearty portions.
Walking into La Gitana Bakery #4, visitors are immediately met with the energy of a true neighborhood eatery. The atmosphere is professional but unapologetically local, reflecting the lived reality of Jackson Heights where Spanish is the primary language of commerce and community. The shop operates with a practical, counter-service model that invites customers to look directly at the daily offerings before making a selection. This "see it to believe it" approach ensures that you are getting exactly what looks freshest that day. Whether you are a local resident stopping in for a daily lunch or a visitor exploring the culinary diversity of the 7-train corridor, La Gitana offers a warm, inviting environment that prioritizes the satisfaction of a well-cooked meal over flashy modern decor.
Location and Accessibility
La Gitana Bakery #4 is strategically situated at 90-31 37th Ave, Jackson Heights, NY 11372. This prime location puts it in the center of one of New York City’s most accessible neighborhoods. For those navigating the city via public transit, the bakery is highly convenient. It is just a short walk from the 90th St - Elmhurst Av station on the 7 train, which provides a direct link between Manhattan and Flushing. Additionally, the major transportation hub at 74th St - Broadway/Roosevelt Ave is within reasonable distance, offering access to the E, F, M, and R trains, as well as several major bus lines like the Q32 and Q33.
For those traveling by foot, the walk along 37th Avenue is a quintessentially New York experience, filled with diverse retail shops and other local landmarks. While street parking in Jackson Heights is notoriously difficult and best avoided if possible, the neighborhood’s high walkability score makes it an easy destination for locals. The storefront is easily recognizable and fits perfectly into the rhythmic pulse of the neighborhood. It is important for visitors to note that the establishment is deeply rooted in its linguistic heritage; while English speakers are welcome, having a rudimentary knowledge of Spanish or being comfortable with gestures will greatly enhance the ordering experience at the counter.

What is worth choosing
When you step up to the counter at La Gitana Bakery #4, the first thing you should look for is the Pollo Guisado (stewed chicken). This dish is a cornerstone of their menu, featuring chicken that has been slow-cooked until it is incredibly tender, bathed in a savory sauce with vegetables. For many regulars, this is the ultimate comfort food. Pair it with a side of their perfectly seasoned rice and sweet plantains to experience the full spectrum of Colombian home-style flavors. At approximately $12 for a large plate, it represents some of the best value for money in the entire borough.
Another must-try is the chicken soup with cilantro. Unlike the thin broths found elsewhere, this soup is hearty, filling, and packed with traditional herbs, often served with a generous side of rice. For those looking to quench their thirst with something unique, the Agua de Panela is highly recommended. It is a traditional Colombian drink made from unrefined cane sugar and lime, offering a tart and refreshing counterpoint to the rich, savory stews. When choosing your meal, the best tip is to follow the advice of local regulars: look at the counter first to see what has just come out of the kitchen. Choosing the dark meat options in the stews will generally yield the most flavor. Finally, remember to bring cash to take advantage of the better pricing and keep the transaction smooth in this busy, authentic environment.
In conclusion, La Gitana Bakery #4 is a testament to the enduring appeal of traditional cooking in the modern city. It offers a slice of Colombian life in the heart of Queens, providing delicious, soul-warming food at prices that are increasingly rare in New York. If you approach with an open mind and a hungry stomach, you will find one of the most rewarding dining experiences on 37th Avenue.

This is a great counter order restaurant. I'm not sure what is wrong with everyone leaving 1 star reviews but you need to go to their little counter and look at the food to see what looks good that day. This is not the place to get grilled chicken breast because that's not the style that is good. Also, dark chicken meat is always more delicious so go make your little grilled chicken at home and stop thinking restaurants will cook it to your tastes when you go out. Their stewed meats are slow cooked in different sauces with vegetables. The Pollo guisado is always delicious, I've loved the chicken soup with cilantro and they have a delicious columbian drink called Agua de panela that is tart and refreshing. If you don't speak Spanish it might be hard to come here but if you speak rudimentary Spanish they are super nice and will try and make sure you are happy. Pay cash and it is cheaper. A huge chicken soup with rice is $9 A huge plate of Pollo guisado with rice and a veggie side and sweet plantain is $12

The lady at the counter didn't speak English. I looked at the picture on the door that said calinda "la gitana" thinking that was a dish. The women said si and kept waiting for something else. I had to muster all the Spanish I know along with gesture. At the end, I have to give up and pick from the buffet. Which is fine. It's Queens and I wouldn't insist people to speak English. The real problem was food. The beans and rice was about to go bad. It must've left on the warm buffet all day long. I wasn't about to get food poisoning, do I left it untouched. For $15.25, I'd expect a better food. I won't be returning, needles to say.
