The atmosphere within La Gran Uruguaya Bakery reflects the fast-paced, high-energy environment typical of Jackson Heights. It is a place where the aroma of fresh bread and sweet sugar fills the air, drawing in commuters and residents alike. While the bakery focuses on traditional recipes, it has gained a widespread reputation across the five boroughs, particularly among the Latino community, for maintaining a specific standard of flavor that is difficult to find elsewhere in the city. Whether you are a lifelong resident of Queens or a visitor exploring the culinary wonders of the Roosevelt Avenue area, this bakery offers a window into the rich pastry culture of Uruguay.
Location and Accessibility
La Gran Uruguaya Bakery is situated at 85-06 37th Ave, Jackson Heights, NY 11372, USA. This location is strategically placed in one of the most accessible parts of Queens. For those utilizing public transportation, the bakery is within walking distance of several major transit hubs. The 82nd St-Jackson Heights subway station, serving the 7 train, provides a direct link for those traveling from Manhattan or deeper into Queens. Additionally, the E, F, M, and R trains at the Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Ave station are just a short distance away, making it a convenient stop for anyone in the New York metropolitan area.
For locals walking through the neighborhood, the storefront is easily identifiable along the active 37th Avenue, which is known for its dense collection of international shops and eateries. While street parking can be challenging—as is common in this part of New York—the high foot traffic and proximity to bus lines like the Q32 and Q33 ensure that the bakery remains a high-visibility destination. The surrounding area is a testament to the melting pot of New York, providing a lively backdrop for a morning coffee or an afternoon pastry run.

What is worth choosing
When visiting La Gran Uruguaya Bakery, the standout choice that dominates customer recommendations is undoubtedly the Tres Leches Dulce de Leche cake. This specific dessert has earned a loyal following, with many local families considering it an essential component of their celebrations. The combination of the three-milk soak and the rich, creamy dulce de leche topping creates a flavor profile that is both decadent and traditional. If you are visiting for the first time, this cake is the definitive item to try, as it represents the peak of their confectionery skill.
Beyond the sweets, their savory options like the ham and cheese croissants and various empanadas are worth considering for a quick meal. However, it is important for New York shoppers to keep a few practicalities in mind before heading to the counter. First and foremost, the bakery operates on a cash-only basis. Despite signs that may suggest otherwise, local regulars emphasize that having cash on hand is necessary to avoid inconvenience at the register. Additionally, visitors should be aware that pricing can fluctuate; items like empanadas or croissants may see price adjustments frequently, so it is always wise to confirm the cost with the staff before finalizing an order.
While the service style is often described as brisk and typical of a busy Queens storefront, the quality of the bread and the legendary status of the Tres Leches cake continue to draw crowds. For those who prioritize authentic flavor and traditional South American baking, La Gran Uruguaya Bakery remains a significant destination on 37th Avenue. Just remember to stop by an ATM first, and you will be ready to enjoy some of the most sought-after Uruguayan treats in the city.
Ultimately, choosing La Gran Uruguaya is about embracing the local flavor of Jackson Heights. It is a place where the products speak for themselves, maintaining a legacy of taste that has spanned generations of New Yorkers. Whether you are picking up a dozen pastries for the office or a centerpiece cake for a family party, you are participating in a long-standing neighborhood tradition that celebrates the rich culinary heritage of Uruguay right here in the heart of Queens.

I have only ever come here for one thing only: the tres leches dulce de leche cake. It is absolutely delicious and my entire family has come for this cake for various occasions over the years. Removing one star because they do not take credit in 2025 and that’s annoying and the customer service could see some improvement. I haven’t tried anything else on the menu.

Very disappointed. The sign outside says debit cards are accepted, but once you’re inside, it’s “cash only.” That’s misleading and inconvenient. Prices change constantly — empanadas and ham & cheese croissants go up 50 cents to $1 from one day to the next. Customers are always asking how much things cost because nothing is consistent. Service is rude and unprofessional. The bread is good, but the inconsistent pricing, cash-only policy, and bad attitude make it not worth it.

Wanted some treats after exploring all the amazing food on 37th. Ordered two apple turnovers and some caramel treat with dried chocolate sauce and sprinkles. Staff was very friendly (Spanish speaking) and efficient. Beautiful inside and out, very spacious, lots of options. It's cash only, and parking is difficult to say the least. Would definitely return.

A Jackson Heights staple. I have been coming to this bakery since 2002 before they moved to this current location. Best empanadas and pastries you will have in Jackson Heights.

Visiting from Florida. Great service. We had the Uruguay parrillada and costilla soup. Soup was delicious. The meat was good but rating is compared with other places we’ve been.
