Magnolia Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the pantheon of New York City culinary icons, few names carry as much nostalgic weight as Magnolia Bakery. While the original Bleecker Street location sparked a global cupcake phenomenon in the late 1990s, the Upper West Side outpost at 200 Columbus Avenue has become a cornerstone for locals and dessert-seeking tourists alike. This location perfectly captures the "old-fashioned" American bakery aesthetic that defined the brand's rise to fame, offering a warm, pastel-hued environment that feels like a step back into a simpler time. Whether you’re a long-time resident or a visitor fresh from a stroll through nearby Central Park, this branch provides a welcoming space to indulge in the classic sweets that made the bakery a household name.
The Upper West Side location is particularly notable for its evolution beyond just cupcakes. As Magnolia Bakery has grown from a neighborhood secret to a global brand, this Columbus Avenue spot has remained grounded in the community while introducing modern innovations like the fan-favorite Banana Pudding Bar. The bakery maintains a professional yet friendly atmosphere, where the smell of vanilla buttercream and fresh-baked cookies fills the air, creating a sensory experience that is as much about the environment as it is about the food. Even with its high-profile reputation, the shop strives to provide a "home-baked" feel, meticulously decorating every cupcake and hand-scooping every cup of pudding to ensure that every New Yorker gets a taste of the magic that started in the West Village decades ago.
Location and Accessibility
Magnolia Bakery is prominently situated at 200 Columbus Ave, New York, NY 10023, USA. Located at the corner of West 69th Street, it sits in one of the most picturesque and walkable sections of the Upper West Side. Its proximity to several major cultural landmarks makes it a strategic stop for a day of sightseeing. It is just two blocks west of Central Park and a short walk from the American Museum of Natural History and Lincoln Center. This prime real estate means the shop is often bustling, particularly on weekends when tourist crowds gather to sample the legendary desserts.
Accessibility for this location is excellent. For those using the New York City Subway, the 72nd Street Station (serving the 1, 2, and 3 lines) and the 66th Street-Lincoln Center Station (serving the 1 line) are both within a few minutes' walk. Additionally, the B and C lines at 72nd Street provide easy access from the east side and uptown. Several bus routes, including the M7 and M11, run along Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues, stopping very close to the bakery's entrance. The shop itself is street-level and features a small indoor seating area with a few tables, allowing patrons to enjoy their treats on-site, though many choose to take their goodies "to go" for a picnic in the park.

What is worth choosing
When you step into Magnolia Bakery, the Banana Pudding is the undisputed champion and is absolutely worth choosing. Whether you opt for the classic vanilla or one of the specialty flavors like Red Velvet or Chocolate Hazelnut from the pudding bar, it is a decadent experience that lives up to its "iconic" status. Many regulars describe it as "thick liquid gold," and it is often cited as the primary reason for a return visit. It is the perfect choice for someone looking for a consistently high-quality, creamy dessert that never disappoints.
For those interested in the bakery’s namesake cakes and cupcakes, the Red Velvet Cupcake with whipped vanilla icing is a perennial favorite. However, a helpful tip from the local community: while the frostings are widely considered some of the best in the city, the actual cake can sometimes be on the denser side. If you prefer a lighter, moister bite, the Hummingbird Cake Slice (chock-full of bananas, pineapples, and pecans) or the Carrot Cake are highly recommended alternatives. If you do happen to encounter a slice that feels a bit dry, the staff is known to be professional and accommodating with refunds or exchanges, ensuring that your experience remains sweet. To avoid the heaviest crowds and ensure the freshest selection, try to visit during the weekday mornings—and definitely don't leave without a cup of that famous pudding!

Banana pudding was SO good. Iconic, I wish I could have it every day. I must be in love. Matcha cupcake was good, the frosting had to be some of the best I’ve ever had, but the actual cake was dry and hard. Pretty disappointing for a bakery.. isn’t your thing supposed to be cakes? I guess their forte is in thick liquids!

Great to have this UWS location with a nice banana pudding bar. My vanilla sliced cake was extremely dry, which ended up getting refunded -- but it was disappointing that this product was even sold in this state. Other than that, typical Magnolia eith great presentation. A few tables available inside. Be prepared for tourist crowds on the weekend!

Haven’t had Magnolia’s banana pudding in a while so I decided to check them out after dinner in the city. I ordered 4 puddings, 2 original and two chocolate covered strawberry. I was disappointed with both flavors but more with the original pudding. While purchasing my items I noticed a worker scooping the banana pudding into the cups. She wasn’t really making sure to get a little bit of everything in the cup and my pudding was mostly whipped cream. There was barely any wafers or bananas. I paid 30 dollars for four puddings that consisted of mostly whipped cream. Very disappointed and I was really excited to have my family try it. Don’t know if I’ll go back.

30AUG.2025 Quick pop in and at this location. My first time here, as I’ve been to the other location at the Hudson area. Great treats and delicious. A nice variety of sweets to choose from. Very busy spot in this area.

I am lactose intolerant and I ate the banana pudding. No stomach upset! I am usually scared to eat milk based desserts but they have excellent quality products that is probably lactose free/gluten free. The banana pudding was delicious, also tried the chocolate brownie which was yummy(tasted like it was made of almond flour-gluten free)
