Breads Bakery - Upper West Side Introduce
In the heart of Manhattan’s Lincoln Square neighborhood, Breads Bakery has established itself as an indispensable pillar of the Upper West Side culinary scene. Located at 1890 Broadway, this bakery is far more than a simple bakeshop; it is a sensory landmark where the aroma of toasted nuts, caramelized sugar, and fermenting sourdough spills out onto the sidewalk, beckoning locals and tourists alike. Since its inception, Breads Bakery has been celebrated for its commitment to Old World techniques blended with a distinctly New York energy. For residents of the Upper West Side, it serves as a reliable daily haunt for breakfast, a sophisticated lunch destination, and the primary source for the city’s most coveted celebratory breads.
The hallmark of the Breads Bakery experience is its "unparalleled freshness," a result of baking in small batches throughout the day. While many bakeries front-load their production, Breads maintains a rhythm that ensures a warm loaf of Challah or a flaky croissant is always within reach. The bakery gained international acclaim for its Chocolate Babka—frequently cited by critics as the best in New York—but its true value to the neighborhood lies in its versatility. It is a place where you can find healthy, high-quality options for every meal, from nutrient-dense salads and probiotic-rich dips to hearty, slow-fermented ryes that would make any "bubbe" proud. In a neighborhood that prides itself on community and quality, Breads Bakery has become a "valuable contribution" that mirrors the sophisticated yet grounded spirit of the Upper West Side.
Location and Accessibility
Breads Bakery is perfectly positioned at 1890 Broadway, New York, NY 10023, USA. This prime location is situated between West 62nd and West 63rd Streets, placing it directly across from the iconic Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Its proximity to such a major cultural hub makes it a favorite for pre-performance snacks or a post-matinee coffee. For those living in the Lincoln Square area, the bakery is a centerpiece of daily life, easily reachable on foot from the many residential towers and brownstones that define the neighborhood.
Accessibility is a major draw for this branch. For those utilizing the New York City subway system, the 59 St-Columbus Circle station (A, B, C, D, and 1 trains) is just a few blocks south, while the 66 St-Lincoln Center station (1 train) is only three blocks north. Additionally, the M5, M7, M20, M66, and M104 bus lines provide frequent service along Broadway and the surrounding avenues, making the bakery an easy stop for commuters. The shop itself features a clean, modern layout with street-level entry, and its outdoor seating area offers an "airy and perfect" spot for people-watching along one of Manhattan's busiest thoroughfares. For those arriving from outside the immediate neighborhood, the Central Park West entrance is only a short walk away, making it a convenient pitstop for a park-bound picnic.

What is worth choosing
When you walk into Breads Bakery, the absolute "must-try" is the Chocolate Babka. It is worth choosing because it redefined the category in New York; instead of the dry, crumbly versions often found elsewhere, this loaf is a "pure decadent insanity" of moist dough and rich Nutella-dark chocolate swirls. If you are looking for something savory, the Feta or Potato Bureka is highly recommended. These pastries are "soft, flaky, and full of flavor," making them a perfect companion to a house-made iced coffee. For a more substantial meal, the Cured Salmon on a Jerusalem Baguette—which features cream cheese, cucumbers, and red onion on a sesame-studded sourdough—is a favorite that even out-of-towners insist on taking home with them.
It is also worth paying attention to their "special of the week." Breads is known for its playful innovation, such as the Rye Babka or Rye Brownies, which offer a sophisticated nod to traditional Jewish baking with a modern twist. For those planning a dinner party, picking up a round "Festive Challah" topped with multiple seeds and grains is a guaranteed way to impress guests. Beyond the food, it is worth choosing Breads simply because of their ethics. Knowing that your purchase supports a business that donates "a massive amount" of fresh food daily to New York’s most vulnerable through Rescuing Leftover Cuisine adds a level of satisfaction that goes beyond the palate. Whether you are grabbing a quick Bureka during the morning rush or lingering over a coffee in the outdoor seating, choosing Breads Bakery means supporting a business that truly cares about the "dignity and hope" of the New York community.
Ultimately, Breads Bakery at Lincoln Square is a masterclass in how a professional business can maintain its soul while serving a massive, bustling city. While the morning rush might require a bit of patience, the "silver lining" is the opportunity to connect with the Upper West Side community. From the first bite of a warm, marzipan-filled almond croissant to the last slice of a weekend sourdough, Breads provides a high-quality, authentic experience that has become a quintessential part of the New York lifestyle. Make sure to stop by 1890 Broadway and see for yourself why this bakery remains one of the most beloved names in Manhattan.

I have long been a loyal patron of Bread’s Bakery. They offer a variety of delicious breads, pastries, salads, dips, vegetables, beverages and more made with high quality ingredients. They are a really valuable contribution to the lincoln square neighborhood with a healthy option for breakfast, lunch, or dinner for residents and employees working nearby. Their menu offers a variety of options for individuals with different dietary needs and preferences. They have always had an A safety rating. One family anecedote to testify to how divine bread’s bakery really is- my brother and his wife moved to DC a few years ago and without fail whenever he visits her one request (insistence) is for for him to bring her a sandwich from Bread’s Bakery back to DC! The one minor criticism for me has, and likely always will be the very slow and at times less than professional, cold and unfriendly thr service is- in a way that really contrasts their warm food and aromas. If you visit at off peak times you will still be quickly taken care of, but come during a morning rush and you may be waiting 30 minutes to order 1 item. The silver lining? If you’re a local you’re bound to run into and catch up with at least one neighbor while you wait. I also want to commend Bread’s Bakery on their business model. In a world where many business don’t even have a recycling receptable, Bread’s takes recycling and composting very seriously. They also really care about food waste. I have it on very good authority from friend who volunteers with Rescuing Leftover Cuisine (RLC)- an NYC based nonprofit that Bread’s donates DAILY a massive amount of fresh salads, vegetables, dips, soups, breads and pastries to our cities most vulnerable. They donate from every location fresh food that is still good. For many of these neighbors of ours, this is the first nice salad or well balanced fresh meal they’ve had in weeks or months. Thank you Bread’s! Bread’s Bakery also participates in Too Good To Go, another food waste reduction program which is not a not for profit. I will continue to support bread’s bakery and encourage you to do the same!! P.S the special babka flavor of the week was RYE BABKA and RYE brownies! How I wish my bubbe and zayde z”l were still alive to taste this!

Visited Breads Bakery during my recent trip to New York. Though it was a quick stop, I tried the Bureka and an Iced Coffee—both were absolutely delicious and instantly lifted my mood. The freshly baked Bureka was soft, flaky, and full of flavor. What really stood out to me was the warm aroma of fresh baked goods that filled the air—it made the experience even more inviting. The staff were energetic, welcoming, and always smiling. We also enjoyed the outdoor seating, which was clean, airy, and perfect for relaxing. I’ll definitely be coming back to try more on my next visit to New York! Signing off Hiral Amodia (Instagram @TheHeeBee)

Disappointing. Been coming for years and it's changed. Cappuccino was terrible. Barista pulled the shot then let it sit while making another drink so it was cold and bitter. Egg sandwich overpriced by at least $1.50. Cool music and friendly staff couldn't compensate.

📍Breads Bakery (Broadway), NY Almond croissant 🥐 Chocolate rugelach 🍫 Brewed coffee ☕️ Cappucino ☕️ Food: The almond croissant was baked perfectly- flaky and crispy outside, soft and buttery inside. The almond filling smelled amazing and tasted very natural. It was a bit on the sweeter side, but still really good!! Every bite brought so much happiness 😆 The chocolate rugelach was also delicious! It was lighter than the croissant but still rich in flavor. Both the brewed coffee and cappuccino were smooth and rich! Service: The staff were super friendly and full of energy! They created such a warm and happy vibe that felt like the perfect way to start the morning ❤️ Environment: They had utensils, napkins, water, and different types of milk (oat, almond, whole) available for self-serve! Though the café is small, it is kept very tidy and organized. The outdoor seating was also well-maintained and is great for enjoying your drink while watching people walk by, cars on the road, and even pigeons flying around. Overall: Definitely a 5/5!! If I were staying in the area longer, I’d come here all the time. This place just gives you a happy, feel-good morning 😁

The chocolate babka is legendary for a reason. I had one bite, and that led me to go out of the store with three loaves, confident that my loved ones will like it.
