Ole and Steen Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the heart of Lower Manhattan, where the architectural grandeur of Tribeca meets the high-energy pace of the Financial District, Ole & Steen brings a much-needed slice of Danish "hygge" to New York City. Known in its homeland as Lagkagehuset, this acclaimed Danish bakery has successfully translated its heritage of precision baking and sophisticated design to the New York region. For local residents and the city’s professional workforce, the location at 100 Church St represents more than just a place to grab a quick bite; it is a refined culinary destination that celebrates the deep-rooted traditions of Scandinavian pastry-making and artisanal bread production.
Ole & Steen has built its global reputation on the foundation of quality and authenticity. Unlike the typical sugar-heavy American bakery, the Danish approach focuses on textures, subtle sweetness, and the complex flavors of grains like rye and wheat. Every item displayed behind their sleek, modern glass cases is a testament to the meticulous craft of Danish bakers. From their world-famous "Social" cakes to their densely packed seeded breads, the bakery offers an experience that is both visually stunning and deeply satisfying. Whether you are looking for a serene spot to enjoy a morning coffee or a sophisticated venue to pick up treats for a corporate gathering, Ole & Steen provides a professional yet welcoming atmosphere that resonates with the discerning tastes of New Yorkers.

What is Worth Choosing
If you are visiting Ole & Steen for the first time, there is one item that stands above the rest as a cultural phenomenon: the Cinnamon Social. This long, pull-apart pastry is layered with soft dough, rich vanilla custard, and cinnamon, topped with icing. It is the perfect balance of sweetness and texture, making it a favorite for office treats or weekend brunches. For those who prefer something slightly less sweet, their scones are a highly recommended choice. Local patrons frequently praise the scones for their exceptional quality, texture, and taste, noting they are far superior to the often-dry varieties found in other shops.
For a savory option, the traditional Danish open-faced sandwiches (Smørrebrød) or their freshly baked rye bread loaves are worth choosing. While some diners find the heated savory pastries, such as the ham and cheese croissants, to be quite rich and buttery, the bread itself remains a masterclass in baking. Pair your choice with one of their expertly prepared coffees—regularly cited by locals as some of the better brews in the area. Whether you are indulging in a slice of the "Social" or opting for a wholesome piece of rye, Ole & Steen offers a high-quality, authentic taste of Denmark that provides a refreshing alternative to the standard New York bakery fare.

The light skin Spanish male barista with a mullet cut that’s on bar this Friday is rude, and this is after spending $40 and tipping. I simply asked for confirmation on drinks, if you don’t like your job and having to answer questions maybe you shouldn’t be in this profession. It’s basic customer service.

Ole and Steen have a great product most of the time and the service of the staff is excellent. But the heated pastries cheese and ham croissant etc are just wrong. Too oily, too much fat in the filo pastry, just not right. I through away mine after the first then second bite. The scones are significantly better, quality and texture and taste. The coffee is good and the staff are great.

Corporate / high-volume vibe. They use Eversys machines for their espresso drinks, so expect consistency, not artisanship or craft.

Stopped here for a quick coffee and croissant. The coffee was solid, but the almond and raspberry croissant was definitely the highlight. A great spot to swing by if you’re in the area, and it also works well as a place to sit down and get some work done.

A popular Danish bakery, and while my experience was mostly enjoyable, there were a few mixed moments. I tried the Cinnamon Swirl which I had high hopes for, given the bakery's reputation. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a letdown. The swirl looked beautiful with its golden brown layers and cinnamon sugar dusting, but the texture was noticeably dry. It lacked the moist, buttery richness that I was expecting from such a pastry, which made it somewhat underwhelming. However, what redeemed the visit was the Vanilla Cream Cheese Spandauer - an absolute must-try. This was light, flaky layers filled with smooth, rich vanilla cream cheese. The sweetness was perfectly balanced, and the creaminess paired wonderfully with the crisp pastry shell. It was indulgent without being overly sweet, and I would come back just for this alone. The bakery itself has a warm, inviting atmosphere with a wide range of tempting pastries and sandwiches. Entrance faces south east and it is wheelchair accessible. Clean restrooms. In conclusion, while my experience didn’t quite hit the mark for me, I would still recommend this place for anyone seeking quality baked goods. I’ll definitely be returning to try more of their offerings!
