Terranova Bakery Introduce
In the heart of the Belmont section of the Bronx, a neighborhood affectionately known by locals as the "Real Little Italy," Terranova Bakery stands as a towering pillar of New York’s culinary heritage. For over 50 years at its current retail location—and with roots stretching back even further to the arrival of founder Pietro "Peter" Terranova from Sicily in 1961—this establishment has defined the standard for authentic Italian bread. While modern commercial bakeries have largely switched to electric or gas ovens for the sake of speed, Terranova remains a rare custodian of the coal-fired brick oven. This commitment to tradition is not merely for show; the intense, dry heat of coal creates a crust-to-crumb ratio that is nearly impossible to replicate, making their bread a staple on the tables of the city's finest Italian restaurants and in the homes of generations of Bronx families.
Walking into Terranova Bakery at 691 E 187th St is like stepping through a portal to a different era of New York City. The air is thick with the intoxicating, earthy scent of yeast and charred wood, a sensory landmark that has greeted residents for decades. It is a family-owned business in every sense of the word. Peter and his partner Gandolfo expanded the business from a small storefront to a robust wholesale and retail operation, and today, their sons continue the legacy. For the local New Yorker, Terranova is more than just a place to buy a loaf; it is a community touchstone. It is where you go for the "Pane di Casa" (Bread of the Home) that anchors a Sunday dinner, or the sesame-seeded breadsticks that become a childhood favorite for every kid growing up in the 10458 zip code.
The bakery’s reputation extends far beyond the borders of the Bronx. It is common to hear stories of former residents who have moved to Westchester, Connecticut, or even further afield, only to return to 187th Street specifically to stock up on Terranova bread. The bakery has successfully bridged the gap between a high-volume wholesale giant—supplying delis and grocery stores across the tri-state area—and a warm, accessible neighborhood shop. This duality ensures that whether you are buying a single olive roll or ordering a hundred loaves for a corporate event, you are receiving a product made with the same obsessive attention to quality that Peter Terranova brought with him from Sicily over six decades ago.
Location and Accessibility
Terranova Bakery is perfectly situated at 691 E 187th St, Bronx, NY 10458, USA. Its location is a cornerstone of the Belmont food corridor, just a short walk from the iconic Arthur Avenue Retail Market. For those living in the Bronx, it is an easy and essential stop during a weekend food run. The storefront is modest but unmistakably vibrant, often surrounded by the hum of the neighborhood and the occasional delivery truck loading up fresh bakes. Its proximity to Fordham University also makes it a popular destination for students and faculty looking for authentic local flavor.
Accessibility is straightforward for both pedestrians and those using public transit. The bakery is well-served by several Bronx bus lines, including the Bx9, Bx12, and Bx17, which stop within minutes of the storefront. For subway commuters, the B, D, and 4 trains provide access to the Fordham Road stations, followed by a pleasant walk through one of the city's most historic neighborhoods. While street parking in Little Italy is notoriously competitive, the bakery's efficient service makes it a viable "quick stop" for those lucky enough to find a spot. Furthermore, for those who have moved away from the neighborhood but still crave that authentic Bronx crust, Terranova offers online shipping services, bringing a taste of the Bronx to doorsteps across the country.

What is worth choosing
When you visit Terranova, the absolute "must-buy" is the signature Pane di Casa. This loaf is the heart and soul of the bakery. It features a thick, resilient crust that crackles when broken, revealing a soft, slightly chewy interior that is perfect for "scarpetta"—the Italian tradition of using bread to scoop up every last drop of sauce from your plate. It is available both solid and sliced, but many regulars prefer the solid loaf to preserve that coal-fired crunch until the very moment it is served. At a price that has remained remarkably fair over the years, it is the best value in the neighborhood.
For something with a bit more savory flair, the Prosciutto Bread (also known as Lard Bread or "Ciccolo") is legendary. Fresh out of the oven, this loaf is packed with bits of cured meat and black pepper, creating a rich, salty experience that is a meal in itself. Many customers also rave about the Olive Bread and the Pizza Bread, both of which are perfect for a mid-day snack or as the base for an incredible sandwich. If you are looking for something to pair with your morning coffee, don't overlook their traditional Italian biscuits. The sesame-seeded Regina cookies and the pepper taralli offer a crunch and flavor profile that serves as a nostalgic trip back to a traditional Sicilian kitchen.
Finally, if you are lucky enough to visit during the holiday seasons, look out for their specialty bakes like Irish Soda Bread or Easter breads. However, regardless of the season, the true beauty of Terranova lies in the consistency of its staples. Choosing the simple bastone (long loaf) or a handful of their fresh dinner rolls is a guaranteed way to bring the authentic flavor of the Bronx Little Italy into your home. As one customer noted after buying bread for over 20 years, the friendly staff and great prices make every visit worthwhile. Whether you are a lifelong local or a first-time visitor, Terranova Bakery provides a delicious, crusty slice of New York history that you simply cannot afford to miss.

I bought Terranova sesame seed bread sticks and an olive roll for a homeless man requesting money outside on the street. Vhuntermassage LLC

Great little storefront with fresh bread items and some sparse desserts (just packaged cookies). No cakes, danish or similar treats available. The staff were all super sweet and helpful. Their olive bread is amazing! A previous reviewer mentioned them “making” off menu items for their friends/neighbors and I fully believe her. A gent came in during my visit and requested something they definitely don’t carry but they told him to wait while getting it prepared for him. Guess it’s more “who you know”. I’ll definitely return just for the pane di casa and olive bread.
