Yi Mei Bakery Introduce
In the bustling landscape of the New York culinary scene, specifically within the vibrant neighborhoods of Queens, finding an authentic and affordable local spot is like discovering a hidden treasure. Yi Mei Bakery, located on Broadway, serves as a quintessential example of the neighborhood Chinese bakery that has remained a steadfast provider of comfort and quality for the local community. For residents of Elmhurst and the surrounding areas, this establishment offers a nostalgic and reliable experience, specializing in the soft, airy, and flavorful baked goods that characterize the Hong Kong-style baking tradition. In a city where prices are constantly rising, Yi Mei Bakery stands out by maintaining a commitment to accessibility and traditional taste.
The first thing many visitors notice about Yi Mei Bakery is its unassuming presence. It is a place that prioritizes the craft of baking over flashy modern aesthetics. While the exterior might blend into the busy streetscape of Broadway, stepping inside reveals a stark contrast. The interior is known among regulars for being exceptionally clean, neat, and well-organized, creating a welcoming environment for anyone looking to grab a quick breakfast or a mid-afternoon snack. It is the kind of local institution where you will see a diverse cross-section of New Yorkers, from students looking for a budget-friendly meal to long-time residents seeking the authentic flavors of their heritage. This sense of community and reliability is what defines the Yi Mei experience.
Location and Accessibility are key components of the bakery's identity. Located at 81-24 Broadway, the bakery is situated in a high-traffic area of Elmhurst, New York. While the address is technically within the 11373 zip code—an area often associated with Elmhurst but frequently integrated into the broader Queens cultural sphere—it is easily accessible for those traveling through the borough. The bakery is positioned along a major commercial artery, making it a convenient stop for those using public transportation. Several subway lines and bus routes serve this section of Broadway, ensuring that even those coming from other parts of the city can reach it with ease. While the storefront itself is described by some as a hidden gem that isn't immediately eye-catching, its proximity to local schools and residential hubs ensures a steady flow of foot traffic. If you are navigating the area, looking for the numbers 81-24 will lead you to some of the freshest buns in the borough.
Services Offered at Yi Mei Bakery are centered around the traditional "grab-and-go" model typical of high-volume New York bakeries. The focus is on providing fresh, daily-made products that cater to the needs of the neighborhood. The service is efficient and straightforward, reflecting the fast-paced nature of the city. The primary services include:
- Daily production of fresh Hong Kong-style (Chinese) buns and pastries.
- Retail walk-in service for individual and bulk purchases.
- Late-hour community discounts, often featuring deals such as two breads for a reduced price to ensure minimal food waste and community support.
- Specialized preparation of traditional staples like red bean and coconut-filled items.
- A clean and organized self-service or counter-service environment (depending on the time of day).
Features and Highlights of this establishment make it a standout choice for those who value authenticity and value over luxury branding. Despite its small size, the bakery offers several distinct advantages that keep the local population returning regularly. These highlights include:
- Authentic Taste: The bakery is celebrated for its Hong Kong-style staples, featuring buns that are consistently soft, fluffy, and true to traditional recipes.
- Incredible Value: In an era where artisanal breads often cost significantly more, Yi Mei Bakery is known for its highly competitive pricing, with many items priced around the 2-dollar mark.
- Surprising Interior: While the exterior may look modest or "old-school," the inside is meticulously maintained, clean, and well-ordered.
- Community-Centric Atmosphere: The bakery is a popular haunt for local students and families, contributing to a trustworthy and welcoming neighborhood vibe.
- Late-Day Incentives: The bakery demonstrates a commitment to the community by offering discounts during later hours, making fresh food even more accessible.
- Quality Ingredients: Despite the low price point, the quality of the staples—such as the coconut and red bean fillings—remains consistently high.

What is worth choosing when you visit Yi Mei Bakery? If you are a fan of classic Chinese pastries, there are a few items that are considered non-negotiable by the local regulars. The "staples" are where this bakery truly shines. First and foremost, the coconut bun is highly recommended for its perfect balance of sweetness and texture. Similarly, the red bean pastry is a favorite for those who appreciate the traditional, earthy sweetness of well-prepared bean paste. For those who prefer savory or plain options, the standard buns are noted for being exceptionally soft and fluffy, making them a perfect accompaniment to a morning coffee or tea. The late-hour "2 for 3 dollars" deal is also an excellent choice for those looking to sample different varieties while taking advantage of the bakery's community-focused pricing.
Please keep in mind a few practical tips for your visit. As is common with many authentic, old-school gems in New York City, this establishment is cash only. Being prepared with smaller bills will make your transaction smooth and quick. Also, because it is a small shop that prioritizes freshness, the selection may be more concentrated rather than overwhelming, but every item on the shelf is there because it meets the bakery's standards for quality and taste. If you find yourself on Broadway in Queens, do not be deterred by the modest storefront; step inside and experience one of the best-kept secrets for traditional baking in the region.

This is truly a hidden gem. The store is small and look really old/rusty. But when you got inside, its a completely clean, neat and well organized place. There are not much bread but everything look good and yummy. I saw a lot of student came inside also, so I trusted this place. The experience is more than I expected. Besides the fact that bread is really cheap- Around 2$ for a bread? You can’t find something like this anymore. Besides they have discount, 2 bread for 3$ for late hour. So it’s really a community actions. The only thing bad about this place is the location is not eye catching, i wish they be known more. Definitely will visit it again

I used to come here a lot as a little kid and have fond memories of this place. Came back here and it’s changed a little from what I remember. First, the prices are still amazing. I got a big sponge cake for $2.25. The sponge cake tasted good, but it wasn’t anything special. It was very fluffy and not too sweet. It was a little dry and had this strange banana, egg yolk taste to it. Considering I came very close to closing, they had a good variety of baked goods, mostly sponge cake rolls and buns. The service was a little curt, and I felt kind of nervous paying for my order. Even from a no frills place it’s nice to have a polite staff.

My mom and I have been to this store many years ago and had a wonderful experience. The both of us got sponge cake and buns. The food was wonderful, and the service was wonderful. The atmosphere was that some people were in there, and many other things.

My mom and I went to this place many years ago, and my mom bought many buns, including ham and egg, butter, and milk tea. The food and drink was good. The service was wonderful, and the atmosphere was lively, with lots of people buying things.
