Fay Da Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
Fay Da Bakery is a cornerstone of the Chinese-American culinary landscape in New York City, and its location at 40-36 82nd St serves as a vital hub for the Elmhurst and Flushing communities. Founded in 1991 by Han Chou, a baker who refined his craft in Taiwan before immigrating to the United States, Fay Da has grown from a single shop in Manhattan's Chinatown into one of the most recognizable bakery chains in the tri-state area. This specific branch on 82nd Street is often described by local patrons as "especially cute," offering a cozy and homey atmosphere that stands out even among its sister locations. As a professional local guide for the New York region, it is clear that Fay Da represents a bridge between traditional Eastern baking techniques and the diverse tastes of a modern metropolitan audience.
The bakery is renowned for its ability to balance quality with affordability, making artisanal-style Chinese pastries accessible to everyone. In a city where specialty desserts can often command premium prices, Fay Da remains committed to its roots as a family-owned neighborhood provider. The interior of the 82nd Street shop is clean, well-organized, and designed for a seamless self-serve experience. Customers can grab a tray and tongs, browse the rows of fresh-baked buns and pastries, and pay at the counter—a quintessential New York bakery ritual. Whether you are a local resident picking up a quick breakfast or a visitor exploring the rich food culture of Queens, Fay Da Bakery offers an authentic slice of the city's multicultural flavor profile.
Location and Accessibility
Located at 40-36 82nd St, Flushing, NY 11373, USA (technically situated in the vibrant Elmhurst neighborhood near the border of Jackson Heights), this bakery sits on one of the busiest commercial strips in Queens. The location is ideal for those who navigate the city via public transportation. It is just steps away from the 82nd St-Jackson Heights station, which serves the 7 train—the "International Express" that connects Manhattan to the heart of Queens. This proximity makes it an incredibly convenient stop for commuters heading to or from work.
For those traveling by bus, multiple MTA lines including the Q32 and Q33 stop in the immediate vicinity, providing easy access from other parts of the borough. Pedestrian access is excellent, as the bakery is situated in a high-traffic walking district filled with various shops and services. While street parking on 82nd Street can be challenging during peak business hours, the shop’s efficient service model is designed for quick turnarounds, making it a perfect "grab-and-go" destination for those who find a nearby spot. The storefront is street-level and easily recognizable by its classic branding, contributing to the bustling, energetic streetscape that defines this part of New York.

What is worth choosing
When visiting the 82nd Street location of Fay Da Bakery, the first thing any local would suggest is their signature cakes. Unlike the dense, sugary frostings found in many American supermarkets, Fay Da’s cakes are celebrated for their light, airy chiffon base and fresh fruit toppings. The Strawberry and Cream cake or the Mango Mousse cake are perennial favorites that offer a refreshing, delicate sweetness. For those celebrating a milestone, their "Zodiac Animal" cakes are a charming and unique choice that adds a personal touch to any party.
On the savory side, the Roast Pork Bun (Char Siu Bao) and the Curry Beef Puff are essential picks. The Curry Beef Puff, in particular, has received accolades for its flaky, buttery crust and flavorful filling. If you are looking for a more substantial lunch, the spicy slaw chicken sandwich or the wild Alaskan pollock fish sandwich are surprisingly robust options that regulars highly recommend. For those who enjoy a bit of nostalgia, the "Hot Dog Bun" wrapped in sweet dough is a classic New York Chinese bakery staple that never disappoints. While some popular items like sesame balls may sell out quickly due to delivery schedules, the sheer variety of other buns—like the Taro or the Cream and Coconut—ensures you will always find something delicious. To wash it all down, don’t miss their house-made soy milk or a classic Hong Kong-style milk tea, which provides the perfect creamy accompaniment to their savory treats. Choosing Fay Da means choosing a piece of New York history that continues to prioritize the simple joy of a fresh-baked bun.

I’m not usually someone who complains about food, but I felt I had to share my experience. I recently purchased 4 chicken patties and a cake. While the cake was good, the patties had a bad smell and taste, as if they had been sitting out for a couple of days. In addition, I’ve noticed on multiple visits that the staff at this location are consistently rude, especially toward people of color. They don’t greet customers, and even when I say “thank you” or “have a nice day,” they don’t acknowledge it. Overall, I left very disappointed.
