Bear Mountain Bakery and Cafe Introduce
In the heart of Manhattan’s Midtown hustle, beneath the intersection of 58th Street and 8th Avenue, lies a hidden gem that has quickly become a destination for dessert lovers across the five boroughs. Bear Mountain Bakery and Cafe, located within the innovative Turnstyle Underground Market, offers a warm, rustic escape from the frantic pace of the New York City subway system. While many commuters rush through the Columbus Circle transit hub, those in the know pause at 1000 8th Ave to indulge in what are frequently described as some of the most decadent, "size-of-your-face" cookies in the city. This bakery brings a touch of homemade comfort to the urban underground, proving that world-class sweets don't always require a traditional street-level storefront.
Bear Mountain Bakery and Cafe is part of a larger tradition of excellence, originally gaining fame for its Hudson Valley roots and its connection to the West Point community. By bringing their family recipes to the Turnstyle Market, they have introduced a specific style of baking—one characterized by gooey centers, well-balanced sweetness, and substantial portions—to a diverse audience of New York locals and global travelers. The atmosphere is friendly and energetic, with staff members who understand the need for speed during a commute while still maintaining a genuine passion for the artisanal products they serve. For anyone navigating the Upper West Side or Midtown West, it is a essential stop for a high-quality "pick-me-up" that stands out in a city full of options.
Location and Accessibility
Strategically located at 1000 8th Ave, New York, NY 10019, Bear Mountain Bakery and Cafe occupies a unique position within the Turnstyle Underground Market. This is an "underground" location in the most literal sense, situated in the concourse that connects the 59th Street-Columbus Circle subway station to various street-level exits. This placement makes it incredibly accessible for anyone using the A, C, B, D, or 1 subway lines. You do not need to swipe your MetroCard to access the market; it is located in the public-access corridor, making it an easy detour for pedestrians walking near the southwest corner of Central Park.
For those entering from the street, look for the glass-canopied entrances to the Turnstyle Market along 8th Avenue between 57th and 58th Streets. Once downstairs, the bakery is easy to find amidst the curated selection of food vendors. Its proximity to major landmarks like the Time Warner Center, Lincoln Center, and the Hearst Tower ensures that it is perfectly situated for a quick snack before a show or a treat to enjoy while people-watching at Columbus Circle. Because it is sheltered from the elements, it is also a popular "all-weather" destination for locals looking to avoid the rain or snow while still enjoying a premium bakery experience.

What is worth choosing
If you are standing at the counter and struggling to decide, the Pistachio Marshmallow cookie is arguably the most talked-about item on the menu. It is a vibrant, flavorful choice that balances the nuttiness of the pistachio with the sweet, gooey pull of melted marshmallow. For the traditionalist, the Chocolate Chip cookie is a "must-try"—it is a masterclass in the classic recipe, featuring high-quality chocolate and a dough that stays soft and chewy long after it leaves the oven. These are the kinds of cookies that locals describe as "perfectly baked," reminiscent of the best high-end bakeries in the city but with a unique, gooey character all their own.
Another worth-choosing item for the "pistachio lovers" is the Caramel Pistachio Marshmallow, which adds a layer of rich caramel to the already popular base. If you aren't in the mood for a cookie, the brownies and "crinkles" (fudgy brownies finished with powdered sugar) are equally impressive. For those on a morning commute, the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese sandwiches are surprisingly high-quality for a bakery setting, often served on fresh biscuits or croissants. Whether you are grabbing a single cookie to "inhale" before your train arrives or a bundle of three to share with friends, Bear Mountain Bakery and Cafe delivers a consistently excellent, highly indulgent experience that makes the underground trek well worth the effort.
In conclusion, Bear Mountain Bakery and Cafe at 1000 8th Ave represents the best of New York’s "underground" food culture. It combines the convenience of a transit hub with the heart and soul of a high-end artisanal bakery. With its massive, gooey cookies and friendly atmosphere, it has earned its place as a favorite among Midtown West residents and commuters alike. If you find yourself anywhere near Columbus Circle, do yourself a favor: go downstairs, follow the scent of fresh baking, and treat yourself to one of the best cookies you’ll find in Manhattan.

Really geat cookie selection - I had a hard time choosing. The cookies are large, and the flavors were good. I think my favorite was the pistachio - but I think they rotate their flavors frequently. The service was very friendly.

Firstly, this is underground in the Turnstyle Underground Market. The cookies are amazing, gooey with a good chew and a well-balanced sweetness!! It also doesn't hurt that they're each like the size of your face. I love the chocolate chip and the pistachio marshmallow ones so far, I haven't had the chance to try all of them yet. Will update my review with pictures the next time I get a cookie or three, I keep inhaling them before I remember to take a pic 📸 If fresh cookies on your commute/walk/date/hangout/trip aren't your thing, there is also a full spread of other goodies 🤤 pictured: caramel pistachio marshmallow and biscoff 🤩

Best cinnamon rolls I've ever had. No cap, as the kids like to say. Don't know about the other baked goods, but they looked great and everything is baked on premises. Not overloaded with frosting. Buy a tray and take then to work, you'll be the most popular person there!

What’s with the inconsistency between the same red velvet cheesecake? $7 for a mini cheesecake that can’t even be consistent in size.
