Parisi Bakery & Deli Introduce
In the heart of Manhattan’s historic Nolita neighborhood, just a stone's throw from the bustling energy of Chinatown, stands a culinary monument to New York’s Italian-American heritage: Parisi Bakery & Deli. Established in 1903, this family-owned institution has spent over a century perfecting the art of the hero. For local New Yorkers, Parisi is not just a place to grab lunch; it is a vital connection to the "old-school" city—a place where the bread is baked fresh daily, the portions are legendary, and the service is as efficient as it is authentic. Whether you are coming off a morning spent at the Lunar New Year celebrations or simply navigating your daily commute, the sight of the Parisi storefront on Mott Street is a welcoming signal that a world-class meal is just moments away.
What truly separates Parisi from the myriad of modern artisanal sandwich shops popping up across the city is its unwavering commitment to tradition. While the neighborhood around it has transformed from a strictly Italian enclave into a trendy shopping and dining destination, Parisi has remained largely unchanged. Its interior reflects decades of history, focusing on what matters most: the food. It is widely known as a "grandmom-and-grandpop" shop, a term of endearment for places that maintain the standards of previous generations. This dedication to quality once earned them famous regulars like Frank Sinatra, who reportedly had their bread shipped to his home in California. Today, that same bread serves as the foundation for sandwiches that are frequently ranked among the best in the five boroughs.
Location and Accessibility
Parisi Bakery & Deli is located at 198 Mott St, New York, NY 10012, USA. Nestled in Nolita (North of Little Italy), the shop is perfectly positioned for those exploring the charming, narrow streets of Lower Manhattan. Its location makes it a favorite stop for locals who live in the area, as well as visitors who have done their research on NYC's most authentic eats. The shop is easily recognizable by its traditional signage and the line of hungry patrons that often stretches out the door during the lunchtime rush.
For those traveling by public transit, the shop is exceptionally accessible. It is within a five-to-ten-minute walk from several major subway stations, including:
- Spring St (6 train)
- Bowery (J, Z trains)
- Grand St (B, D trains)
- Prince St (R, W trains)
Services Offered
Parisi Bakery & Deli operates with a focus on speed, efficiency, and freshness. As a traditional deli and bakery, their services are designed to get high-quality food into the hands of New Yorkers with minimal fuss. Key services include:
- Fresh Daily Bread Baking: The heart of the business is its bakery, producing crusty Italian rolls and loaves that are the envy of the neighborhood.
- Custom Hero Construction: A wide array of cold and hot sandwiches made to order, featuring premium Italian meats, cheeses, and house-made spreads.
- Efficient Takeout Service: The staff is known for being quick and professional, managing long lines with the characteristic speed of a veteran NYC deli.
- Bulk Bread Sales: For those who want to take the Parisi experience home, whole loaves and rolls are available for purchase.
- Catering Options: They provide large-scale sandwich platters that are a staple at local office meetings and family gatherings.
- Pick-up and Delivery: While the in-person experience is classic, they also facilitate orders through local delivery platforms for those within the immediate radius.
Features and Highlights
The "Parisi way" involves specific features that have turned first-time visitors into lifelong fans. Here are the highlights of this Mott Street gem:
- The Bread: Often described as the "perfect" Italian roll—crusty on the outside but light and airy on the inside—the bread is the secret to their sandwich success.
- Massive Portions: A single hero at Parisi is often enough for two meals. These are stacked "lean-to" style, packed with layers of flavor that hold together surprisingly well.
- "The Dennis": Their signature sandwich has achieved viral fame. It features a leaning tower of chicken cutlet, prosciutto, mozzarella, tomatoes, balsamic, and a special herb spread.
- Historical Significance: Established in 1903, it is one of the oldest operating bakeries in the city, offering a tangible link to New York's culinary past.
- Cash-Only Policy: To maintain its old-school operations, the shop remains a cash-only establishment, a quirk that regulars have come to respect as part of its charm.
- Authentic Atmosphere: The shop lacks the "K-mart lighting" or sterile feel of modern chains, opting instead for a cozy, time-worn deli vibe that feels like home.
Contact Information
Because the shop can be busy and occasionally sells out of popular items toward the end of the day, it is helpful to keep their contact details on hand:
Address: 198 Mott St, New York, NY 10012, USA
Phone: (212) 226-6378
Mobile Phone: +1 212-226-6378
Note: Remember that Parisi is typically a cash-only business, so be sure to visit an ATM before joining the queue.
What is Worth Choosing
If you are visiting for the first time, there is really only one choice that serves as the ultimate introduction to the shop: The Dennis. This sandwich is widely regarded as one of the best in New York City. The chicken cutlet is sliced thin, breaded, and fried to a perfect golden brown, then layered with salty prosciutto and creamy fresh mozzarella. The addition of balsamic vinegar and their signature basil/herb spread provides a sweet and savory punch that cuts through the richness of the meat. Many regulars suggest adding hot peppers or roasted red peppers for an extra kick of flavor. The sheer size of The Dennis—often compared in scale to several pieces of fruit stacked together—makes it an incredible value.
Beyond the famous heroes, the Potato and Egg sandwich is a beloved local favorite, particularly for those looking for a hearty breakfast or brunch option. While most of their sandwiches are universally praised, it is the consistency of the bread that makes every choice a winner. Whether you are choosing a simple Turkey Swiss or the "Big Italian" (packed with mortadella, capicola, and pepperoni), the foundation remains that crusty, fresh-baked semolina or Italian roll. For anyone who has ever joked about opening the "perfect" sandwich shop after winning the lottery, Parisi Bakery & Deli is the real-world realization of that dream. It is a place built on quality, history, and the simple joy of a perfectly stacked hero.
In a city that is always rushing toward the future, Parisi Bakery & Deli reminds us that some things are best left exactly as they were in 1903. It is a must-visit for any New Yorker who appreciates the timeless combination of great bread and fresh ingredients.

The sandwich was excellent. We split it after watching the Lunar New Year celebrations in Chinatown, added hot peppers and lettuce. It was stacked but held together while eating. The bread was perfect. Crusty but light. The chicken was sliced thin and tasted fresh. Inside is quick and efficient. Cash only. No seating, so plan to grab a park bench or find a spot nearby. My husband and I love Italian sandwiches and always joke about opening a shop “when we win the lottery.” This is the kind we’d want to make!

Check how big a Dennis roll is compared to a medium sized mandarin. Lots of layers, lots of flavors. Giving 4/5 because the potatoes were a little stale in the egg sandwich I had last time.

Right over the bridge, got my sandwich in a roll but honestly the Hero could feed two people. Crazy good. Freshly made right there over the counter

You can’t beat the prices, sandwich sizes, or quality. I had a #3 and it was delicious. You could tell the ingredients were fresh and that it was made with care.

Stumbled across this place and I’m so glad I found it! This was my last meal before catching my flight back home and it was amazing! I ordered the number 2 on a roll and it was huge. Delicious sandwiches!
