Black Seed Bagels - Nomad Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the competitive landscape of New York City’s breakfast scene, Black Seed Bagels has carved out a unique niche by blending the best of two legendary traditions. Located in the trendy NoMad (North of Madison Square Park) neighborhood, the shop at 1188 Broadway represents a sophisticated evolution of the classic New York bagel. Founded in 2014, Black Seed has become a local sensation for its artisan approach, led by James Beard-nominated executive chef and head baker Dianna Daoheung. Unlike the oversized, pillowy bagels found at many corner delis, Black Seed’s offerings are a hybrid of New York and Montreal styles—smaller, denser, and characterized by a distinct chew and a hint of sweetness from being boiled in honey-infused water before hitting the oven.
What truly sets this NoMad destination apart is its wood-fired baking process. Each batch is hand-fired in a massive wood-burning oven, resulting in a perfectly charred, crispy exterior that shatters satisfyingly before revealing a soft, fermented interior. For residents and professionals in the Flatiron and NoMad districts, Black Seed isn't just a place for a quick "schmear"; it is a culinary experience that respects old-world craftsmanship while embracing modern Manhattan energy. The shop serves as a vital neighborhood hub, often packed with locals who know that despite the fast-moving queue, the quality of the product is consistently above average. Whether you’re a purist seeking a plain toasted bagel or a foodie looking for elevated signature sandwiches, this Broadway staple delivers a "proper" bagel that honors the family-favorite varieties while pushing the boundaries of what a NYC bagel can be.
Location and Accessibility
Black Seed Bagels NoMad is located at 1188 Broadway, New York, NY 10001, USA. It sits on the bustling stretch of Broadway between West 28th and West 29th Streets, placing it right in the heart of one of the city's most dynamic commercial and hotel districts. The shop’s physical location is famously "hidden" within the historic Ace Hotel building, a detail that adds a layer of insider charm to the visit. While the primary entrance is on Broadway, the shop’s layout offers a unique architectural bonus: a rear door that leads directly into the spacious and beautifully designed Ace Hotel lobby and lounge. This connection allows patrons to escape the elements and enjoy their meal in one of the most iconic "living rooms" in Manhattan.
For those navigating the city via public transit, the shop is exceptionally accessible. It is just a short walk from the 28th Street station, serving the R and W subway lines, and the 28th St station for the 6 train. Additionally, the major transit hub at 34th Street-Herald Square is only a few blocks north, providing access to the B, D, F, M, N, Q, and PATH trains. Its proximity to Madison Square Park and the Empire State Building makes it a convenient stop for both local office workers and those exploring the central Midtown South area. While seating inside the shop itself is limited to a few stools along the wall, the availability of the hotel lobby makes it a rare "sit-down" bagel destination in a city dominated by grab-and-go windows.

What is Worth Choosing
If you are looking for the definitive Black Seed experience, the "Salmon Classic" is the undisputed heavyweight champion of the menu. It features a generous portion of smoked salmon, plain cream cheese, tomatoes, red onions, and capers on your choice of bagel. For a truly authentic taste, many regulars recommend ordering it on a toasted Poppyseed or Everything bagel; the wood-fired crunch of the seeds pairs perfectly with the silky texture of the salmon. At roughly $19.00, it is a premium-priced item, but the "overstuffed" nature of the sandwich often makes it a substantial meal that justifies the investment in a city where high-quality smoked fish is a prized commodity.
For those visiting during the morning rush, the "BEC" (Bacon, Egg, and Cheese) is a elevated version of the New York classic, utilizing Vital Farms pasture-raised eggs and white cheddar. If you want to try something that highlights the shop's innovative spirit, look for the "Chili Crisp Cream Cheese" special—a collaboration with Fly By Jing that adds a spicy, numbing, and savory kick to any plain bagel. Finally, for a sweet-and-savory hybrid, the "AB&J" (House-made Almond Butter and Raspberry Jam) on a toasted Cinnamon Raisin bagel is a sophisticated alternative to the standard breakfast fare. Pro-tip: if the shop is crowded, grab your order and head through the back door into the Ace Hotel lobby. Finding a corner in that beautiful space with a fresh, warm bagel and a coffee is one of the best ways to spend a morning in NoMad.

Despite being a franchise, these folks do one thing and they do it well. Proper bagels in all the family favorite varieties and then some, decent portioned spreads and "shmears" – it's no wonder this place is packed for breakfast and lunch. Don't be discouraged by the queue, though – they move quickly. A single toasted poppyseed bagel with cream cheese took just a few minutes. It was one of the better bagels I'd had in a minute, filling in a good way, with a nice crunch on the outside and a soft (but not overly chewy) inside. The seating here is just some stools off to the side since most people get their food to go. One can be infinitely picky about what constitutes an excellent bagel, but I'd say on most days these folks consistently serve above average. Give them a try. A bonus: in the rear of this shop is a door that leads to the spacious ACE Hotel lobby/lounge, which is delightful on its own but also affords shelter from the elements.

Overstuffed bagel! This location happens to be hidden in the Ace Hotel. It’s nice since you have the option of eating in the beautiful hotel lobby. I ordered the Salmon Classic and a coffee, only able to finish half. The taste was great, the price wasn’t. Inflation clearly is winning. The counter help was super friendly. FYI. They sell day old bagels at a discount already packaged.

A cute little shop located we popped into after spending forever trying to locate a place to get some food. We heard New York bagels were a thing to try, and the reviews on here were goood. We had a pleasant experience overall. It was amusing listening to the kid in the back who thought we were asking what the definition of Russian dressing was vs.. what it was.. (i.e, the base, the taste)... However, the gentleman at the counter was very helpful and provided a couple recommendations based on our likes/dislikes.

This morning, I went to buy a bagel. I entered the store at 10 AM to place my order and waited for 10 minutes without being served. So, I went somewhere else to order coffee. When I returned to pick up my bagel, they told me there had been a mistake. Throughout this process, I was dissatisfied—the employee didn’t even offer a sincere apology, just said one word: "mistake." As I opened my bagel, it looked just like in the picture—the food was made so poorly that it was completely unappetizing and killed any desire to eat it. I spent time waiting and paid money, yet I didn’t even receive an apology. The food was carelessly prepared, and I am extremely angry about this. Such an attitude and such poor quality are absolutely unacceptable.

Stopped in for a quick bite and honestly, the bagels are really good perfectly chewy inside with a nice crisp outside. You can tell they care about quality ingredients. I tried everything bagel with egg and cheese and it definitely hit the spot. Prices are steep for a bagel. Expect to pay $9-$12 for a simple sandwich or specialty bagel, which feels high for something so classic.
