Grandpa Chen Kissena Char Siu Bao Introduce
In the vibrant and culinary-rich neighborhood of Flushing, Queens, New York, the streets are lined with diverse eateries that cater to every possible craving. Among these local establishments is Grandpa Chen Kissena Char Siu Bao, a traditional Chinese bakery that focuses on the staples of Cantonese-style snacking. For New Yorkers living in or traveling through the Kissena Boulevard corridor, this bakery serves as a specialized destination for those seeking a quick, no-frills bite. Known primarily for its eponymous steamed and baked buns, the shop aims to provide the community with flavors that are reminiscent of classic Hong Kong-style cafes, albeit in a more streamlined and modest setting.
For many locals, particularly students and residents in the immediate vicinity, a neighborhood bakery is judged by its convenience and its price point. Grandpa Chen Kissena Char Siu Bao occupies a space that prioritizes these two factors. While Flushing is home to many elaborate and high-end pastry shops, this particular location maintains a simpler approach. It is the kind of place where the aroma of steamed dough often catches the attention of pedestrians, drawing them in for a warm snack during a busy commute or a long day of classes. However, like many authentic local gems, it carries a distinct neighborhood character that combines traditional food preparation with a straightforward, utilitarian service style that is common in many of the city’s smaller ethnic enclaves.
Location and Accessibility
Grandpa Chen Kissena Char Siu Bao is strategically located at 60-08 Kissena Blvd, Flushing, NY 11355, USA. This location is particularly notable for its proximity to several major educational and residential hubs in Queens. It sits directly across from or near major institutions, making it a frequent stop for students who are looking for a cheap and filling snack between lectures. The bakery is situated on a busy stretch of Kissena Boulevard, which is a primary artery for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the Flushing area, ensuring high visibility for those navigating the neighborhood.
Accessibility via public transportation is one of the location’s strongest suits. The bakery is well-served by the Q17, Q25, and Q34 bus lines, which run frequently along Kissena Boulevard and connect the area to the main Flushing-Main Street transportation hub (servicing the 7 Train and the Long Island Rail Road). For those driving, the bakery is easily reached from the Long Island Expressway (I-495), which is just a few blocks away. While street parking in Flushing can often be a challenge, the quick-service nature of the shop allows for relatively fast pickups. Pedestrians will find the storefront easy to access directly from the sidewalk, fitting right into the urban fabric of one of New York City’s most energetic boroughs.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Grandpa Chen Kissena Char Siu Bao, the primary draw is, of course, the Char Siu Bao. These buns, available in both steamed and baked versions, are the foundation of the menu. For those who are passing by and need a quick, warm snack that "does the job," these buns provide a classic flavor profile that is synonymous with New York's Chinese bakery scene. While the quality is reflective of the very low price point, the convenience of having a warm BBQ pork bun in hand while walking down Kissena Boulevard is a quintessential Flushing experience. For those who prefer their buns with a bit more structure, the baked versions offer a slightly glazed, sweet exterior that contrasts well with the savory pork filling.
One of the most practical choices at this location is the selection of frozen buns. Sold at a discount, these are an excellent value for local residents or students who have access to a steamer at home. Buying them frozen allows you to enjoy the bakery’s offerings at your own convenience while saving even more money on an already affordable product. Additionally, for a traditional pairing, the iced milk tea is a staple beverage choice that complements the sweetness of the Char Siu filling. While the service style at Grandpa Chen is famously direct and no-frills, those who go in knowing exactly what they want—specifically the signature buns—will find that it serves its purpose as a reliable, budget-friendly neighborhood stop.
It is important for visitors to keep in mind the unique character of this establishment. As a small, localized bakery, the menu is often displayed at the register, and the staff operates with a level of efficiency that can sometimes be perceived as intense. However, for many New Yorkers, this is simply part of the authentic charm of a busy Queens storefront. If you are in the area and looking for an inexpensive way to satisfy a craving for a traditional Chinese snack, Grandpa Chen Kissena Char Siu Bao offers a functional and accessible solution. Just be sure to check the stock of the day's bakes when you arrive, as popular items can move quickly due to the high volume of foot traffic from the nearby schools and transit lines.
Ultimately, Grandpa Chen Kissena Char Siu Bao represents the gritty, functional reality of New York's neighborhood bakeries. It doesn't aim to be a luxury patisserie; it aims to be a reliable source of affordable food for the people of Flushing. Whether you are grabbing a bun for the bus ride or stocking your freezer with discounted staples, this shop remains a steadfast presence on Kissena Boulevard. For the local New Yorker who values proximity and price, it is a location that fills a specific and necessary niche in the community's daily life.

I go to school in the area and was excited to see a Chinese Bakery so close. The smell hypnotized me into walking in. However, the menu is printed only on the cash register so as I looked, the cashier stared at me. It seemed like she wanted to turn me to stone. The prices are cheap but so is the quality. They only had two drinks and the food I ordered wasn’t even in stock!! Either way I left with my iced milk tea AND A HEADACHE. I’ve been experiencing migraines and stomachs ever since and it made me wish I never walked in. If you don’t want bad customer service, and bad food then go somewhere else.

It’s alright, does the job if you’re passing by. The filling could use more salt and the bun could be fluffier. They also sell frozen buns at a discount.

I've purchased many char siu buns since they've opened and the quality has gone down. Last week I purchased six char siu baos and was extremely disappointed. The bao had a vinegar like taste and there was so much bao and little meat. This isn't an isolated incident. I thought I would give it another try but after last week I will go to Mei La Wah to buy my baos.

Buns are average. Pineapple bun is a little dense. Egg tarts are runny and crust falls apart. A little pricey for being average tasting. I prefer other Asian bakeries.

Used to go to the one in little neck, finally one closer to me! Char siu bun is delicious and the new pineapple butter bun was yummm ! Their ice honey lemon drink was really really good, like the one I use to drink as a kid in main st bakeries.
