Délice de Bernay Introduce
New York City is a landscape defined by its relentless pace, but every so often, a neighborhood gem emerges that encourages us to slow down and savor the moment. Délice de Bernay, located in the charming crossroads of Greenwich Village and the West Village, is exactly that kind of sanctuary. As a professional French bakery, it brings a touch of European elegance to the corner of West Houston Street, offering a refined yet approachable atmosphere that resonates with local New Yorkers. Whether you are looking for a quick morning pick-me-up or a quiet place to escape the mid-day rush, this establishment has cultivated a reputation for being more than just a place to buy bread—it is a community hub where hospitality and flavor intersect.
The essence of Délice de Bernay lies in its commitment to the "vibe" and service that define the neighborhood experience. In a city where service can sometimes feel transactional, the staff here are frequently praised for their genuine friendliness and warmth. This personal touch creates an inviting environment that complements the decadent nature of their baked goods. From the golden, flaky layers of their signature croissants to the specialized beverage options, the bakery manages to balance traditional French techniques with the specific preferences of a modern New York clientele. It is a place where every pastry feels like a small indulgence, and every customer is treated like a welcomed guest.
Location and Accessibility
Délice de Bernay is perfectly positioned at 178 W Houston St, New York, NY 10014, USA. This prime location puts it at the heart of one of Manhattan’s most sought-after neighborhoods. For those navigating the city by subway, the bakery is exceptionally convenient; it is just steps away from the Houston St station (1 train) and a short walk from the West 4th St-Washington Sq station (A, C, E, B, D, F, and M lines). Its central location on West Houston Street makes it an easy stop for residents of the West Village, Soho, and Greenwich Village alike, serving as a transitional point between these vibrant districts.
One of the most remarkable accessibility features of this bakery is its hidden outdoor space. While the front of the shop maintains a classic city storefront aesthetic, the interior leads to a backyard patio that acts as a true sanctuary from the surrounding urban noise. This garden area is a rare find in Lower Manhattan, providing a peaceful, open-air environment for customers to enjoy their coffee and pastries. The bakery is designed to be accessible for those on a quick commute, but the availability of the patio encourages a more leisurely experience for those who have the time to linger. The shop’s layout and location ensure that it remains a high-traffic destination without losing the intimate feel of a local village cafe.

What is Worth Choosing
When you visit Délice de Bernay, the absolute "must-order" item is the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Croissant Sandwich. While this is a staple of the New York breakfast diet, the version here is elevated by the superior quality of the croissant itself. The staff will often offer to warm it up for you, which is highly recommended to fully appreciate the "amazing texture" and the way the flavors of the egg and cheese meld with the buttery, flaky pastry. It is a savory symphony that outshines many of the standard deli offerings in the area. For those looking for something even more substantial, the Steak Croissant is a decadent and unique choice that comes highly recommended by regulars for its rich, satisfying filling.
On the sweet side, the Fruit Danish is a classic choice, particularly when enjoyed fresh in the backyard patio. To accompany your meal, the coffee program is surprisingly robust for a neighborhood bakery. Specifically, the decaf coffee paired with pistachio milk is a delightful and inclusive option that sets them apart from more traditional shops. While the bakery offers a variety of cookies and cakes, such as the Opera cake, the true stars of the menu are the savory croissant-based creations and the overall atmosphere of the garden. Choosing to sit in the patio with a warm sandwich and a specialty latte is the best way to experience the "impeccable vibe" that makes Délice de Bernay a West Village favorite. Very friendly staff and incredible croissant sandwich with bacon egg and cheese! Great flavor in the egg and cheese and amazing texture in the croissant, and he warmed it up for us which was lovely. The opera cake was good but not amazing (light on coffee and almond flavor, a little on the dense side), ditto with the fruit Danish (you could tell it had been refrigerated vs made fresh). Cookies were ok but had an odd texture kind of like they were gluten free. We were very grateful they had decaf coffee with pistachio milk, and the guy working there was so sweet. I'd definitely come back for the breakfast sandwiches!

Nice decoration but that’s about it. I was super excited to try the first vegan French bakery in the city but what a disappointment - even the vegan Whole Foods pastries bit these (by a lot). We came in for brunch at 12 pm and the croissant and cakes were definitely a couple of days old. The croissant was tasty but it was extremely dry (it was a struggle to cut with fork and knife) and cold (the chocolate was solid). The lemon cake was overall not tasty and so sweet that we could not eat more than a couple of bites. The cheesecake had some potential but it was lukewarm and the strawberry jam was most likely store bought. All 3 desserts took over 20 minutes to be served, even though the place was not full and they were not fresh. We had also ordered tea which only arrived as we were wrapping up the pastries. A very expensive and unfortunate brunch. Their restaurant menu is tasty but still very overpriced (steak from steak frites is just pan seared Chunk Foods steak anyone can get at the supermarket for $5).

This patisserie is just amazing! Went there on opening day and although super busy, the service was impeccable! Tried the Chocolatine and the Plain Danish and both were so delicious! Can’t wait to go back and try everything else from the menu! As a bonus, the space is very beautiful

The best vegan French restaurant and bakery in NYC and maybe the world! The food was so fresh, flavorful, and delicious that I couldn't believe it was vegan and I'm not vegan. The guy working at the front is great. He made me the best croissant with eggs, bacon, and cheese that I've ever had. I'd definitely recommend this place to both non-vegans and vegans. I'm definitely going back to try everything!
