Great Taste Bakery Introduce
In the bustling, sensory-rich streets of Manhattan's Chinatown, specifically where the neighborhood transitions into the Two Bridges area, lies a hidden gem that defines the old-school New York culinary spirit: Great Taste Bakery. Located at 35 Catherine Street, this no-frills establishment is a cornerstone of the local community, offering a window into the traditional Cantonese baking style that has sustained generations of New Yorkers. For those who prioritize flavor, authenticity, and value over modern minimalist decor or long-winded small talk, Great Taste Bakery is an essential destination. It represents the "real" New York—a place where efficiency is the primary language and the quality of the dough speaks for itself.
Great Taste Bakery is widely recognized by locals as a high-speed, high-reward environment. As many regular patrons note, this is not a location designed for "pleasant chitchat" or a leisurely afternoon spent "dillydallying." The staff operates with a surgical precision typical of the city's busiest markets, moving customers through lines with a speed that ensures everyone gets their fresh buns while they are still warm. While this level of efficiency can occasionally be misconstrued as bluntness, it is simply a reflection of the bakery's commitment to serving a high volume of local residents, senior citizens, and commuters who rely on these affordable staples. It is a place of ritual and tradition, where the clatter of baking trays and the exchange of loose change provide the soundtrack to a truly authentic Chinatown experience.
Location and Accessibility
Situated at 35 Catherine St, New York, NY 10038, Great Taste Bakery occupies a strategic spot on the eastern edge of Chinatown. This specific block is a vibrant pocket of the city, characterized by local foot traffic and a community-centric atmosphere. For New Yorkers, the 10038 ZIP code offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern urban living, and Great Taste Bakery sits comfortably at the heart of this intersection. It is a neighborhood where the buildings tell stories, and the aroma of sweet yeast and toasted coconut serves as a constant invitation to passersby.
Accessibility is straightforward for those familiar with the Lower Manhattan landscape. The bakery is easily reachable via several major transit lines. The F train at East Broadway is a short walk away, as are the B and D trains at Grand Street. Furthermore, various bus routes, including the M15 and M22, stop nearby, making it a convenient detour for those traveling through the Financial District or the Lower East Side. While the physical space inside is modest—featuring only three tables that are often claimed by a loyal group of neighborhood seniors engaging in social groups—the bakery is perfectly positioned for a "grab-and-go" style of eating. Visitors should be prepared for the tight, bustling layout common to older Manhattan storefronts, which adds to the authentic, unpretentious vibe of the shop.
Services Offered
Great Taste Bakery functions primarily as a high-volume retail bakery, focusing on traditional Chinese and Cantonese-style baked goods. Their service model is built around daily freshness and high-turnover inventory. The services provided at the 35 Catherine Street location include:

What is worth choosing
When standing before the display at Great Taste Bakery, the sheer value of the items might tempt you to buy one of everything. However, there are a few legendary items that have earned the shop its loyal following. The Coconut Buns are, without question, a top priority. At a price point that is almost unheard of in modern-day New York—often around $1.30—these buns are described by regulars as "absolutely amazing." The dough is soft and not overly sweet, providing the perfect vessel for a rich, delicious coconut cream center that bursts with flavor. It is a masterclass in balance and a testament to the skill of the bakers who work behind the scenes.
Equally noteworthy are the savory options. The Ham and Egg Bun is a classic choice for a quick, portable breakfast that satisfies the New Yorker on the move. Additionally, their Cocktail Buns (filled with a sweet, buttery coconut paste) are frequently cited as the best in the city. If you are looking for something a bit more substantial, their variety of sponge cakes and egg tarts offer a lighter, airy texture that showcases the delicate nature of traditional Cantonese pastry work. For less than the price of a single coffee at a Midtown chain, you can walk out of Great Taste Bakery with a full bag of warm, fresh treats. Don't be fooled by the modest appearance of the storefront; the quality of the baking here is world-class, making it a "must-visit" for anyone who values the true, unvarnished flavors of Manhattan's Chinatown.

If you want a nice setting and pleasant chitchat this place is not it. The staff is efficient but does not tolerate people who dillydally. This can be misconstrued as being rude and perhaps it's borderline but we've never had issues with the staff. Now that we get the preambles out of the way they have the best cocktail buns, and ham and egg buns in Chinatown. They also have other baked goods and all the prices are more than reasonable. They have 3 tables but are almost always occupied by regular customers, senior citizens who get together for some group socials.

Been here a few times now. The coconut buns are absolutely amazing. They cost about $1.30 and the taste is just incredible. The buns themselves are not too sweet but just sweet enough and the coconut cream inside is just delicious. I've gotten a few other things from here and the pastries are always good. You will not find more reasonably priced baked goods in the city. Do not be fooled by appearances. Just amazing baked goods at an even more amazing price. The staff is super sweet and I will definitely be back.

Best bakery ever. I can't find a single place in flushing with these prices. The elderly lady that works there is kind and patient. She will let you know when shes ready for you if someone is ahead of you so in that time u can browse the giant selection of pasties available

i’ve never rated a restaurant before but my negative experience here forced me to start. The overall taste of the food wasn’t bad, but to say I was greatly disappointed with the crab fried dumplings and scallop soup dumplings is an understatement. There was absolutely no crab or scallops in the dumplings not even a hint. I have very sensitive taste buds so I’m certain of the lack of seafood. Mentioned this to the waitress and was met with excuses that I as a customer couldn’t refute. Would not come back again.

This place is amazing!!! A hole in the wall that’s run down visually but that’s when you know the baked goods are going to be amazing. The prices are sooooo cheap and you get a great portion!! Definitely a place to stop by and get one of everything. I got the cream roll, raisin bread, and cheesecake and I’m so amazed at how delicious they all are. Been living in NYC for 10 years and I wish I would have found this place sooner. Definitely going back!
