Russ & Daughters Introduce
In the pantheon of New York City culinary landmarks, few names carry as much weight or history as Russ & Daughters. Located at 179 E Houston St, this isn't just a place to grab a quick bite; it is a living piece of Lower East Side history. Established in 1914 by Joel Russ, the shop has remained a family-owned icon for over a century, specializing in what is traditionally known as "appetizing." In the unique vernacular of New York’s Jewish food culture, an appetizing store is the counterpart to a delicatessen; while a deli sells meats, an appetizing store sells "the foods that go with bagels," primarily dairy and smoked fish. Stepping into the Houston Street shop today, visitors are met with a scene that feels remarkably preserved, featuring white-coated counters, neon signage, and a meticulous display of the world’s finest smoked fish.
For local New Yorkers, Russ & Daughters represents the gold standard of quality. It is a place where the art of thin-slicing smoked salmon is treated with the reverence of a high-performance craft. The atmosphere inside is high-energy and distinctly "Old New York." Because of its legendary status, the shop is often bustling with a mix of neighborhood regulars and culinary pilgrims. The staff moves with "true New York fashion"—fast, efficient, and direct. It is the kind of place where you should come prepared with your order ready, as the pace reflects the urgency of a city that values both its time and its traditions. Despite the occasionally long lines and the frantic energy when they are slammed, the reward is a taste of something that has been perfected over four generations.
The experience at Russ & Daughters is defined by the uncompromising quality of its products. From the legendary Gaspe Nova smoked salmon to their private-label cream cheeses and hand-picked caviar, every item behind the counter is curated to be the best of its kind. While many modern shops attempt to replicate the "vintage deli" aesthetic, Russ & Daughters doesn't have to try—it simply is the original. It remains a cornerstone of the Lower East Side, surviving decades of neighborhood change while continuing to serve the same high-caliber food that earned it a place in the National Register of Historic Places. For anyone looking to understand the soul of New York food, this Houston Street shop is an essential destination.
Location and Accessibility
Russ & Daughters is situated at 179 E Houston St, New York, NY 10002, USA, on the northern edge of the Lower East Side. This prime location puts it at the crossroads of several vibrant neighborhoods, including the East Village and Nolita. The shop’s exterior, with its iconic neon fish and classic signage, is a landmark in its own right and is easily recognizable to anyone walking along the busy Houston Street corridor.
Accessibility for local residents and visitors is excellent via public transportation. The shop is located just a few blocks from the Second Avenue station, served by the F train. Additionally, the Broadway-Lafayette St station (B, D, F, M, 6 trains) is within reasonable walking distance, making it accessible from almost anywhere in Manhattan or Brooklyn. For those using the bus, the M15 and M21 routes provide convenient stops nearby. While the shop does not offer much in the way of indoor seating—it is primarily a "take-away" appetizing counter—its proximity to local parks like Sara D. Roosevelt Park provides a perfect spot for locals to enjoy their sandwiches on a nice day. Be mindful that the area is very busy, so arriving by foot or transit is always recommended over trying to find street parking.

What is worth choosing
When placing an order at Russ & Daughters, the "Classic" is the most famous starting point. This sandwich usually consists of Gaspe Nova smoked salmon and cream cheese on a bagel. The smoked salmon is consistently exceptional—fresh, flavorful, and salted to perfection. However, local "insider" advice suggests that while the fish is world-class, the bagel itself can sometimes be a point of contention for true bagel purists who prefer a specific level of crust and chew found in dedicated bagel-baking shops. Because of this, many seasoned New Yorkers opt for the "DIY" approach: they purchase the high-end lox and spreads from Russ & Daughters and pair them with fresh bagels from their favorite neighborhood bakery.
Beyond the classic salmon, the sturgeon and sablefish are highly recommended for those looking to explore deeper into the appetizing menu. Both are sliced with incredible precision and offer a buttery, rich flavor that is hard to find elsewhere. If you have a sweet tooth, their chocolate or cinnamon babka is widely considered some of the best in the city. Another highlight is the cream cheese; whether you choose the plain, scallion, or the decadent caviar cream cheese, the quality is undeniably "next level." While a single sandwich can cost around $18, the generous amount of high-quality fish makes it a worthwhile experience for any food lover. Ultimately, Russ & Daughters is about the fish—buy it by the pound or in a sandwich, and you are participating in a New York tradition that is as flavorful as it is historic.

I finally got a chance to stop by Russ & Daughters, and now I totally understand why it’s such an iconic New York institution. Stepping inside, the whole place has this classic, timeless, old-school deli vibe, like walking back into a genuine piece of history. All the beautiful fish and items displayed behind the counter are stunning. In true New York fashion, they move fast, so definitely come prepared to order! The food quality here is absolutely next level. Everything they serve is incredibly fresh and flavorful. I went with a classic, getting the salmon sandwich on an everything bagel, and the fish was just exceptional—so fresh, packed with flavor, and sliced generously. The classic bagels and spreads are a perfect complement, with the cream cheese being so good it honestly steals the show! You truly get a lot of food for what you order, making the whole experience feel completely worthwhile and a great value. I did notice that because they are so popular, the service can feel slightly slow when they are slammed, but honestly, the quality of the smoked fish and the authentic atmosphere more than make up for any wait time. Russ & Daughters is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates top-tier smoked fish and an authentic deli experience. It’s sought out by locals for a reason, and I can't wait to go back.

The lox here was good, but the bagel was not When people bring up the best bagel & lox sandwich in NYC, this place comes up occasionally. However, having had it, when you only do half that equation well, I don't think you can be in consideration On the positive side, the smoked salmon was pretty appetizing. It tasted very fresh and had a great salt level. It did feel a bit thin in the context of the bagel, though, like there wasn't that much of it. The cream cheese was fine, but nothing out-of-this-world. The bagel was where I had a big problem. It was so chewy, so not-fresh, that it was not easy to eat. I could tell after my first bite that this was nothing like the other fresh bagels I've had in the city. It just tasted like it was baked a long time ago, and transported to the restaurant. I had to give up on eating this as a sandwich and eventually had to eat it like an open-faced bagel on each half, because of how I just couldn't deal with having that much bad bagel in a single bite. It was just not good. The other thing I've heard people say is the right thing is just to buy the smoked salmon from here, buy a bagel from somewhere else, and make your own DIY bagel & lox. After having this, I would recommend that as well. It cost $18 - which is not terrible, and the portion size is pretty good, but I wouldn't call this a value either Overall, it's some good lox mixed with a pretty bad bagel. 5/10

Just heaven on earth! I recently visited Russ & Daughters and had the most unbelievable Pastrami Russ. The pastrami-cured salmon on an everything bagel, paired with mustard and sauerkraut, was an absolute revelation, bold, perfectly balanced, and unforgettable. I even brought some of their chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons back home to Texas and can’t wait to try them. Truly a must-visit and highly recommended!

Take a number when you walk in the door. The bagels here are top notch and there are plenty of high end options for toppings, take home items and sides. The pickles are some of the best I've ever had and the lox cream cheese is unbelievable. We are our bagels across the street in the park, it's take out only.

I researched where a NY visitor could find a classic Jewish deli and Russ & Daughters did not disappoint. This deli has been around since the 1920’s with fun memorabilia to show the history. On a Friday at 11am, we had no wait because we sat at the bar, but there was not much of a line for a seat. The menu had many yummy dishes almost all included salmon and other traditional cured fish. If you love fish in your food, you will love Russ & Daughters as they do not skimp on the portions. This was a great NYC breakfast icon that is worth the trip.
