L'imprimerie Introduce
In the heart of Bushwick, Brooklyn, where the elevated M-train tracks cast rhythmic shadows over Myrtle Avenue, lies a sanctuary of French culinary tradition: L'imprimerie. This artisanal bakery and cafe has become a neighborhood institution, known for its uncompromising commitment to the craft of French baking. The name itself, which translates to "The Print Shop," is a nod to the building's history as a local printing press that operated for over half a century. Today, instead of the scent of ink and paper, the air is thick with the intoxicating aroma of fermenting sourdough and high-quality French butter, drawing in a diverse crowd of locals, hospital workers from nearby Wyckoff Heights, and pastry aficionados from across the five boroughs.
Founded in 2015 by Gus Reckel, a former investment banker who traded his corporate suit for a baker’s apron, L'imprimerie was born from a "labor of love." Reckel spent years perfecting small-batch breads and pastries, even going so far as to keep bees on the roof to produce ultra-local honey for his recipes. While the bakery underwent an ownership change in 2024 as Reckel moved into retirement, the spirit of meticulous, small-batch production remains. The interior retains its vintage charm, featuring the original 1920s printing press as a centerpiece, creating an atmosphere that feels both historic and vibrantly alive. For New Yorkers, L'imprimerie represents the best of the city's small-business culture: a place where quality isn't just a buzzword, but a daily practice that begins at 2:00 AM.
The bakery is particularly celebrated for its technical mastery of lamination and fermentation. Unlike mass-produced "French-style" goods found elsewhere, the items here are the result of a multi-day process involving organic ingredients and long cold-proofing. This dedication results in a texture and flavor profile that has been lauded by critics and champion bakers alike. Whether you are looking for a quiet place to enjoy a morning espresso or a reliable source for the crustiest baguette in Brooklyn, L'imprimerie stands as a testament to the idea that some things simply cannot be rushed. It is a cornerstone of the Bushwick community, providing a high-end, authentic experience without the pretension often found in Manhattan’s boutique patisseries.
Location and Accessibility
L'imprimerie is located at 1524 Myrtle Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11237, USA, situated on the border of Bushwick and Ridgewood. This location is remarkably accessible for local commuters and visitors. It sits just steps away from the Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs station, a major transit hub serving both the L and M subway lines. For those traveling from Manhattan or other parts of Brooklyn, the short walk from the subway makes it an easy destination for a morning pastry run or a mid-day coffee break. The bakery is also well-served by several local bus lines, including the B52, B54, and B60, which stop frequently along Myrtle Avenue.
For those arriving by car, street parking is available on Myrtle Avenue and the surrounding side streets, though like most of Brooklyn, it can be competitive during peak hours. The storefront is street-level and easily accessible, featuring a cozy indoor seating area and a few cafe tables outside for those who wish to enjoy their treats while watching the neighborhood go by. Its proximity to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center and various local galleries makes it a central meeting point for a wide cross-section of the community. Whether you are catching the train or exploring the street art of Bushwick, the bakery’s location makes it a convenient and welcoming stop.

What is worth choosing
If you are visiting L'imprimerie for the first time, the Chocolate Almond Croissant is an absolute must-try. This isn't just a pastry; it's a structural marvel. Topped with a generous dollop of almond meringue that caramelizes in the oven, it features a crisp, crackling exterior that gives way to a buttery, honeycomb interior with a rich streak of chocolate and almond paste. For those who prefer a savory start, the Bacon & Cheddar Quiche is highly recommended for its silken texture and smoky depth. The bakery also offers one of the city's most authentic "Jambon Beurre" sandwiches—a simple yet perfect combination of sliced ham, butter, and cornichons on a fresh mini baguette that transports you directly to a Parisian bistro.
For the bread enthusiasts, the Levain Sourdough is a best-seller for a reason. It is a hearty, rustic loaf with a thick, well-baked crust and a moist, airy crumb that reflects the bakery's mastery of natural fermentation. While the sourdough is a staple, don't overlook the Cardamom Lemon Bun. This treat is frequently praised by regulars for its amazing glaze and perfectly balanced floral and citrus notes. It is a refreshing departure from standard sweet rolls and perfectly showcases the bakery's ability to innovate within traditional frameworks. If you are a fan of cookies, the house-made Chocolate Chip Cookie—based on a recipe from the founder's mother—features house-milled flour and a touch of espresso, offering a unique flavor that stands out in a city full of cookies.
While the quality of the pastries is consistently high, New Yorkers should be mindful of timing. The most sought-after items, particularly the specialty croissants, are best enjoyed as early as possible. As the day progresses, the humidity of the city can soften the crispness that makes these pastries famous. Additionally, while the $15-$16 price point for sandwiches may feel premium, the quality of the ingredients and the labor-intensive process of small-batch baking justify the cost for those seeking a truly artisanal experience. Whether you're a long-time resident or a visitor, choosing any of the sourdough-based pastries or the classic French loaves will ensure a "first-class" taste of what makes Bushwick's culinary scene so special.

I have been buying and enjoying their pastries for years. Their King Cake was nice. However, L’Imprimerie ripped me and any other customer who purchased a Miche loaf from them on New Years Eve. They were burnt. Not well-done or rustic, completely bitter and inedible. To spend $15 for something to go in the garbage was a waste.

Tried the guava croissant and the cardamon lemon bun. They are $6.50 a piece. Loved the crisp exterior and the soft interior. The guava filling was just under a spoon. It was more of a crispy croissant. The cardamom lemon bun was amazing. The whole bun was glazed with this flavor and tasted great.

The sandwich was ok. Not a big fan of the croissant and chocolate chip cookie texture

If you’re hiring please call me :) I loved this place’s atmosphere. It was cute and there was a lot of detail in the decor. I ordered a latté with regular milk and after added about a teaspoon of sugar I was very pleased ! I will definitely be returning as I like visiting places an hour away from my home for the walk. Best coffee beans I’ve had so far in all of Brooklyn 🎀☕️

The vegan pastries are delicious. The service is courteous and prompt. But I would look at this place more like a bakery and less like a cafe. The coffee really isn't that good. Both the Americano and drip are very light and watery. But the food? Delicious.
