Golden Steamer Introduce
In the heart of Manhattan’s historic Chinatown, where the streets are lined with tradition and the air is filled with the inviting scents of global cuisines, sits a culinary treasure known as Golden Steamer. For New Yorkers who know their way around Mott Street, this establishment is far more than just a standard bakery; it is a specialist in the delicate art of the steamed bun. While the exterior might appear modest or even "generic" to the untrained eye, Golden Steamer has earned a reputation among locals as one of the premier destinations for high-quality, authentic Chinese bao. It is the kind of place that captures the essence of the neighborhood—unpretentious, efficient, and focused entirely on the quality of the product.
Golden Steamer distinguishes itself from the crowded field of New York bakeries by focusing on "steamed" rather than "baked" goods. While many nearby shops focus on ovens and glazed pastries, this shop masters the steamer basket. The result is a texture that many locals describe as exceptionally soft, fluffy, and moist without ever becoming soggy. This commitment to the steamed method ensures that every bun retains its structural integrity while melting away in the mouth. Whether you are a long-time resident of the Lower East Side or a commuter passing through for a quick, inexpensive breakfast, Golden Steamer offers a comforting slice of authentic culinary craftsmanship that has remained a constant in the ever-changing landscape of New York City.
Location and Accessibility
Golden Steamer is located at 143A Mott St, New York, NY 10013, USA. Situated on Mott Street—one of the central nervous systems of Chinatown—the shop is surrounded by a vibrant tapestry of Chinese grocery stores, herbalists, and tea shops. Because it is a "tiny shop on a busy street," it can be easy to walk past if you aren't looking for it. However, its proximity to major local landmarks and shopping destinations makes it an ideal stop for those already doing their weekly food shopping in the area. For many, stumbling upon Golden Steamer while visiting the grocery store across the street is how they become lifelong fans.
From a transit perspective, Golden Steamer is highly accessible for anyone in the New York metropolitan area. It is located within walking distance of several major subway hubs. The Grand Street station (B and D trains) and the Canal Street station (serving the 6, N, Q, R, W, J, and Z lines) are just a few blocks away, providing a direct connection to Brooklyn, Queens, and the rest of Manhattan. While the area is heavily trafficked and street parking is extremely limited, the bakery is designed for the pedestrian pace of the city. It is a "grab-and-go" style establishment where the lack of seating is offset by the speed of service and the portability of the food.
Services Offered
- Freshly Steamed Buns: A wide variety of bao prepared daily on-site, served hot and ready for immediate consumption.

Features / Highlights
- Signature Fluffy Texture: The buns are famously soft and have the "right amount of moisture," ensuring a premium mouthfeel that sets them apart from mass-produced versions.

What is worth choosing
For the uninitiated visitor, the "must-try" items at Golden Steamer are undoubtedly the sweet specialty buns. The Pumpkin Bun is a local favorite, offering a unique flavor profile that is both earthy and sweet, wrapped in that signature yellow-tinted dough. The Custard Bun is another standout, providing a rich, creamy interior that pairs perfectly with the light-as-air exterior. For those who prefer a savory classic, the Roast Pork Bun (Char Siu Bao) is highly recommended; the filling is flavorful and robust, providing a satisfying contrast to the sweet dough.
Perhaps the most valuable choice at Golden Steamer is the prepackaged box of six. These boxes allow you to mix and match or stock up on your favorites to enjoy later. New Yorkers who live outside of Chinatown often buy multiple boxes to keep in their refrigerators or freezers. Because the quality of the dough is so high, these buns do not require a professional bamboo steamer to return to their original state; a simple steam at home in a covered pot will revive them to their soft, fluffy glory. If you are standing at the counter and feeling overwhelmed by the choices, do not hesitate to ask the staff for help—they are well-regarded for their patience and will gladly guide you toward the bun that best fits your cravings. With prices so low—where you can walk away with three boxes of premium buns for roughly twenty dollars—it is worth experimenting with several flavors to find your own personal favorite.
In summary, Golden Steamer represents the best of what New York’s local food scene has to offer: specialized expertise, incredible value, and a product that brings comfort to every bite. Whether you are standing on the sidewalk of Mott Street taking your first warm bite or steaming a batch in your own kitchen days later, the quality remains consistent and undeniably delicious. It is a cornerstone of the Chinatown bakery circuit and a must-visit for anyone who appreciates the humble perfection of a well-made steamed bun.

I stumbled upon this little bakery as it was across the street from my favorite Chinese grocery store. It's a tiny shop on a busy street full of shops. It's a pretty generic looking bakery so you can easily walk past and miss it. The place specializes in all sorts of steamed buns. I visited a few times and bought several different ones. I always buy the convenient prepackaged box of 6 buns to steam at home. They are freshly made, and I often see condensation inside the lid. You don't need a fancy bamboo steamer to reheat at home either! I use a trivet inside a low stock pot and the buns heat up wonderfully! They come out soft and fluffy like the first day! Notably, there is more bun to filling. However, the fillings are very sweet, so I think the ratio is on point! My favorites include the pumpkin, custard, and roast pork buns. The buns are very inexpensive too for the quality!

Staff was super nice and explained what each bun was. There's no seating, but we stood to the side to try out the buns. The buns were very soft and had the right amount of moisture, not soggy at all. The filling was flavorful. We ended up getting three boxes for about $20!

I know this place got kind of popular online so I was expecting to have to shell out a little more than you do at some of the “underground” places. I was pleasantly surprised; I bought 5 buns and the total was like 8-12$ (I forgot the number but remember my shock at the steal). Not only was the food super cheap, it was also really good! I’m a fan of lean cuts of meat and normally compromise when I get a roast pork bun, but there was only 1-2 big chunks of fat. I also got the chicken bun and that was great as well. The red bean bun I liked less—definitely not sweet enough for my western tastes 😅.

4.4 stars. Reasonably priced boxed take to take home stuffed buns. The bun is very light and fluffy. The red roast pork filling was a good amount and the taste was pretty good. We liked the smaller, slightly sweet, baked, 8-to-a-box, red roast pork buns better because of the higher meat to bun ratio. I tried the salted egg custard bun for the first time and it was pretty good. Comparable to Go Believe Bakery on Grand, which always has a consistent amount of meat but less airy bun.
