Nita's Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the culturally rich neighborhood of Sunnyside, Queens, Nita's Bakery serves as a dedicated destination for those seeking the specific and nostalgic flavors of Eastern Europe. Specializing in traditional Romanian confectionery and baked goods, this local establishment has become a point of interest for the New York region’s Romanian community and food explorers alike. The bakery is best known for its commitment to heritage recipes, offering a window into the culinary traditions of Romania through its selection of cakes, sweet breads, and savory pies. In a city where global flavors are around every corner, Nita's Bakery maintains a niche focus on authenticity, aiming to recreate the "homemade" feel of desserts that many residents remember from their childhoods in Europe.
The bakery operates as a cornerstone for cultural celebrations, providing essential items for holidays and family milestones. While the experience of visiting can vary—with some patrons enjoying the quiet, focused atmosphere and others seeking a more personalized touch—the core appeal remains the products themselves. For the local New Yorker looking for something beyond the standard American cupcake or croissant, Nita's Bakery offers a sophisticated palette of chocolate-layered cakes, walnut-filled breads, and cheese-based pastries. As a professional content writer observing the Queens food scene, it is clear that Nita's Bakery plays a vital role in preserving specific cultural foodways on Greenpoint Avenue, catering to a demographic that values traditional texture and balance in their sweets.
Whether you are planning a birthday for a loved one or simply craving a unique afternoon treat to pair with coffee, Nita's Bakery provides an array of options that reflect the soul of Romanian baking. From the rich, syrupy layers of their cakes to the dense, aromatic swirls of their sweet breads, the bakery aims to deliver a high-quality experience that honors the ingredients and techniques passed down through generations. Like many local neighborhood spots in New York, it is a place where the history of a community is baked into every loaf and every slice.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Nita's Bakery, there are two quintessential items that define the Romanian dessert experience and come highly recommended by regulars. The first is the Amandina. This is a classic Romanian sponge cake layered with chocolate or almond cream and soaked in a sweet syrup. At Nita's, the Amandina is celebrated for being creamy and chocolatey while remaining very well balanced—never cloying or too sweet. It is the perfect choice for someone who appreciates a multi-layered, rich chocolate dessert that pairs elegantly with a hot cup of tea or coffee.
The second must-try item is the Cozonac. This traditional sweet bread is a staple of Romanian households, especially during festive seasons. When it is fresh, the Cozonac at Nita's is soft, rich, and perfectly flavored, mimicking the quality of a homemade dessert. It is often filled with a swirl of walnuts or cocoa, providing a beautiful aesthetic and a satisfying, dense texture. While some patrons have noted that quality can vary depending on the day, finding a fresh loaf of Cozonac is considered a "golden ticket" for fans of authentic Eastern European breads.
For those ordering for a special occasion, the Romanian cakes are a popular choice. Be sure to engage with the salesperson to specify if you want an inscription written on the cake to make your granddaughter’s or loved one’s birthday extra special. While the bakery focuses on a professional and "plain" service style, the quality of the Amandina and the soft richness of the Cozonac remain the primary reasons that locals and members of the Romanian diaspora continue to support this Sunnyside gem. If you are looking for a taste of authentic Bucharest in the heart of Queens, these traditional sweets are your best bet.

I came on a Tuesday to buy a Romanian cake for my granddaughter. It was about 3pm. There were no other customers. The salesperson was a tall woman in her fifties. She made no eyecontact, all she asked was if I want anything written on the cake. I bought the cake and I wanted a loaf of sweet bread/cozonac and 2 cheese pies! The service was plain, unprofessional, unpersonalized! My bill was $84. I paid and left $5 tip because it is customary in our Romanian tradition. The cake was OK! The cheese pies were awful and the sweetbread/cozonac was terrible. They were old and staled! I gave this review so that the owners can see it and take some action!

I had a wonderful experience at Nita Baker y. I tried the cozonac and the amandina, and both were absolutely delicious. The cozonac was soft, rich, and perfectly flavored, just like a traditional homemade dessert. The amandina was creamy, chocolatey, and very well balanced, not too sweet. Everything tasted fresh and high quality. I highly recommend Nita Baker y to anyone who loves authentic and tasty desserts. I will definitely come back!

This European Bakery in Sunnyside is a true 💎. The space is super cute. I got a Dobos and some Rugelach. The Dobos (a Hungarian Pastry) is a layered cake with Chocolate Buttercream and Caramel topping. It was 😋. It wasn't overly sweet and the Caramel was crunchy. The Rugelach was the best I ever had. The prices were good. The ladies working there were helpful and friendly. I will definitely be going back to try some of their other pastries. It is 4/2/23, it's been awhile since my first review. I am happy to say that I've been back to try some other pastries, as promised. They are all equally 😋. I had the Savarina the other day and it was amazing. It was big enough to share and it was the best version of a Baba Rum I've ever had. The Cartof is also very good and very rich. I will be visiting this lovely bakery again.

Love at first bite! We’ve been going to Nita’s European Bakery regularly for years now and it has not disappointed once. Their breakfast pastries (especially the cinnamon roll!), cookies, and individual pastries are all delicious with plenty of variety. I really recommend Nita’s for birthday/special event cakes as well. Their cakes are fairly priced, beautifully decorated, and tasty (plus they seem to be able to accommodate fairly short turn around times for standard sizes). All of the ones I’ve tried are delicious, but the Dantella is truly special.
