Ole & Steen Introduce
In the bustling heart of Manhattan, where the intersection of Broadway and the historic Union Square district creates a constant flow of energy, Ole & Steen stands as a sophisticated haven for lovers of authentic Scandinavian baking. Originally founded in Denmark and having expanded across the United Kingdom and into the United States, this Danish bakery cafe chain has successfully brought the concept of "hygge"—that uniquely Danish sense of cozy contentment—to the streets of New York City. For local residents and commuters, the Union Square location at 873 Broadway offers a refined yet welcoming atmosphere that serves as the perfect backdrop for a morning breakfast meeting, a midday coffee break, or an evening treat. It is a place where the precision of European baking meets the fast-paced life of Manhattan, providing a high-quality alternative to the standard city cafe.
The essence of Ole & Steen is rooted in a tradition of craft that spans over 20 years. Unlike many commercial bakeries, this establishment prides itself on using time-honored techniques and high-quality ingredients to produce breads and pastries that look as beautiful as they taste. The interior of the Union Square shop reflects this commitment to quality, featuring a sleek, modern Scandinavian design with clean lines, warm lighting, and an expansive display case that showcases an array of golden-brown crusts and delicate layers of pastry. For New Yorkers, it is a destination that offers a genuine taste of Denmark without needing a passport, making it a beloved neighborhood staple for those who appreciate the subtle spices and textures characteristic of Northern European baking.
Location and Accessibility are paramount for any successful New York City establishment, and Ole & Steen is perfectly situated to serve a diverse crowd. Located at 873 Broadway, New York, NY 10003, the bakery is positioned just a block away from the iconic Union Square Park. This makes it incredibly convenient for locals residing in the Flatiron District, Chelsea, and the East Village. Whether you are heading to the Union Square Greenmarket or commuting to an office in the nearby Silicon Alley, Ole & Steen is an easy and rewarding stop along your route. Ole & Steen is a Danish bakery cafe chain with 140+ outlets in Denmark, the UK and NYC. I had breakfast there with friends at their Union Square location. They have lots of delicious looking traditional pastries and cakes but I wanted something truly Danish so I had a Kloben bun made with cardamom, raisins and almonds. They also offer sandwiches made with their amazing looking breads. And as a bonus, European-style hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows!

On the way to union square, got Cortado like the Denmark style decor and got the turkey puff for my kids. They love it.

Was looking for some coffee and breakfast around Union Square and was lucky to find this lovely place. It's interior design is minimalistic yet comfortable. I thoroughly enjoyed my egg and cheese breakfast roll. The egg and cheese coupled with bread that's cruchy on the outside and soft on the inside was so delicious I was tempted to buy another one!
