Tompkins Square Bagels | Union Square Bagel Shop Introduce
In a city where the bagel is arguably the most scrutinized food item, Tompkins Square Bagels has managed to secure a reputation that resonates with both long-term residents and those seeking the quintessential New York breakfast experience. Their Union Square location, situated on 17th Street, serves as a bustling hub for the neighborhood, bridging the gap between the historic charm of Gramercy and the modern energy of Chelsea. For New Yorkers, a bagel shop is more than just a place to eat; it is a community staple where the rhythm of the morning is set. Tompkins Square Bagels excels in this regard, offering an atmosphere that feels deeply local and decidedly authentic, steering clear of the tourist-trap feel that can sometimes plague Manhattan’s most famous eateries.
The shop is celebrated for its commitment to tradition, producing bagels that are large, filling, and consistently fresh. Upon entering, the first thing most patrons notice is the sheer variety of options available. From the classic everything bagel to more adventurous seasonal creations, the menu is designed to cater to every possible palate. But it isn't just about the bread; the shop is equally famous for its extensive selection of cream cheeses and spreads, which are applied with the legendary generosity that New York delis are known for. Whether you are grabbing a quick coffee before heading into the office or sitting down to enjoy a slow weekend brunch, Tompkins Square Bagels provides a sensory experience that defines the local lifestyle.
Location and Accessibility
Conveniently located at 23 E 17th St, New York, NY 10003, USA, this branch is perfectly positioned for those living in or visiting the Union Square area. This specific location is one of the most accessible in the city, situated just a stone's throw from the 14th St-Union Square station. This transit hub connects the 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R, and W trains, making it an easy destination for commuters from virtually any part of the five boroughs. For those who prefer to navigate the city on foot, the shop is a pleasant walk from the Flatiron District, Greenwich Village, and Chelsea, sitting right on the edge of the vibrant Union Square Park.
The accessibility of the 17th Street location makes it a prime spot for local office workers looking for a high-quality lunch or a morning meeting treat. Despite the central location, the shop maintains a neighborhood vibe that makes it feel like a hidden gem tucked away from the main commercial drags. Accessibility is also considered in the shop's layout; while the lines can grow long—particularly during the morning rush and weekend peaks—the operation is remarkably efficient. The staff is trained to handle high volumes, ensuring that even when the queue stretches toward the door, the wait time is kept to a minimum, allowing you to get back to your New York day with a warm bag in hand.

What is worth choosing
Navigating the menu at Tompkins Square Bagels can be an adventure in itself. If you are looking for the gold standard, the savory bagels—particularly the Everything or Salt bagels—are the foundation of the experience. They are known for being incredibly filling, so they are perfect for a long day of exploring the city or a heavy workday. When it comes to the spreads, the selection is legendary. However, a local tip for first-timers: the cream cheese application is famously heavy. If you prefer a more balanced ratio, it is worth asking for a lighter spread, though many purists believe the "mountain of cream cheese" is part of the shop's unique charm.
Beyond the bagels, the bakery side of the business is highly recommended. The muffins are a standout choice, often described as just as delicious as the bagels themselves. If you are leaning toward the sweet side, a cinnamon raisin bagel with a sweet cream cheese or one of their fresh cookies makes for an excellent afternoon treat. For those who want the full New York experience, the classic lox and cream cheese sandwich on a fresh, hot bagel is non-negotiable. It captures the essence of the city in every bite. Whether you choose a savory breakfast sandwich or a sweet bakery item, the combination of generous portions and the authentic atmosphere makes every choice a winner at this Union Square staple.
Ultimately, Tompkins Square Bagels on 17th Street stands out because it respects the craft of bagel making while embracing the fast-paced needs of the modern New Yorker. It is a place where the quality of the product matches the efficiency of the service. For anyone in the Chelsea or Union Square area looking for a meal that is both filling and culturally authentic, this shop remains a top-tier recommendation. It is a true slice of New York life, served one massive bagel at a time.

The line was long but moved really fast with the efficient ordering system. Lots of variety with the bagel type and cream cheeses. Everything tasted great — bagels were hot and fresh — but there was way too much cream cheese. I already had known about that beforehand but actually eating it I had to squeeze a bunch of it out. I wish they had half options for the cream cheese, but otherwise still tasty overall.

The bagels are absolutely amazing, very delicious and quite large. The staff is very welcoming, and we were treated wonderfully. The place offers both bagels and bakery items, so if you’re in the mood for a muffin, you can definitely enjoy that as well—and they’re delicious too! It’s highly recommended to try both the sweet and savory options. Personally, I had an excellent experience, and although I leaned more towards the sweet side, I was still completely satisfied. The bagels are really big and filling, so that’s something to keep in mind. The atmosphere is very local, not touristy at all, and it really lets you soak in the authentic Chelsea and New York vibe. All in all, it’s definitely recommended!

NYC bagels! Tompkins bagels are top notch: selection & variety, friendly staff and quick to order. Even though there was a line to the door, it moved quickly and still maintained quality. There are a TON of different schmears - too many to write down (see pics). Of special note is that they were quick to correct an order, with a smile.

Food: 4.3/5 Service: 4.1/5 Value: 4.2/5 This place is so hype and I can get it but it just wasn’t the best tasting nor was it a great experience ordering just because there are so many people. I will admit that their operation is impressive in terms of efficiency. Food: Blueberry bagel with blueberry spread: very solid bagel and delicious spread Murray the cop with bacon: fantastic sandwich but expensive. Another patron recommended adding bacon which definitely made it better. Strongly recommend this if you’re looking for something hearty. Everything bagel with jalapeño cheese spread: pretty disappointing with minimal jalapeño taste. Tastes like just plain cream cheese with cheese Blueberry bagel with cookie dough spread: this was also pretty disappointing. It just seemed overly sweet and didn’t taste like cookie dough. Although we were disappointed by some of the choices, the quality of the food is still good, so I would just make different choices next time! Probably not worth all of the hype but still worth a visit. I would strongly recommend visiting in off hours, as we only had to wait 20 min.

There’s a reason this place is popular! There is a long line but their system is efficient. Wide selection of all things bagels and they will not disappoint. Every sandwich on the menu sounded enticing. I ended up going with the Weezer - egg, chorizo, bacon, cream cheese, and cheddar. Rich but not heavy, perfectly satisfying every bite. Highly recommend!
