Épicerie Boulud Introduce
In the vibrant landscape of the New York culinary scene, few names carry as much weight and prestige as Chef Daniel Boulud. For those who live and work in the Midtown East area of Manhattan, the arrival of Épicerie Boulud at 885 3rd Ave represents a sophisticated addition to the neighborhood's daily routine. This establishment is more than just a standard bakery; it is an eat-in and take-out market that brings the essence of a traditional French épicerie to the heart of the United States' most bustling metropolis. Nestled within the iconic architecture of the Lipstick Building, this location serves as a refined sanctuary for locals seeking high-quality artisanal breads, delicate pastries, and gourmet prepared foods that reflect the standards of fine dining in a more accessible, casual format.
For New Yorkers, the "Lipstick Building" at 53rd Street and 3rd Avenue has long been a landmark of architectural intrigue. The transformation of its vast lobby area into a modern culinary destination has been a point of interest for commuters and residents alike. Épicerie Boulud perfectly utilizes this open, airy space to provide a clean and quiet environment that stands in stark contrast to the hectic energy of the streets outside. Whether you are a professional heading to a meeting in one of the surrounding skyscrapers or a local resident looking for a peaceful spot to enjoy a morning croissant, this bakery offers a level of consistency and elegance that is synonymous with the Boulud brand. It is a place where French tradition meets New York efficiency, catering to a steady stream of customers who value both quality and speed.
Location and Accessibility
Épicerie Boulud is strategically located at 885 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10022, situated inside the lobby of the famous Lipstick Building. For those navigating the New York region, accessibility is one of the primary draws of this specific location. It sits directly at the intersection of 53rd Street and 3rd Avenue, a critical junction for Midtown East commerce and transit. Its proximity to major public transportation makes it an ideal stop for those on the move. The bakery is located right by the 53rd St and 3rd Ave subway entrance, providing immediate access to the E and M trains, and it is only a short walk from the 6 train at the 51st Street station.
The layout of the space within the building lobby allows for a seamless transition from the sidewalk to the counter. For local office workers, the location is a convenient "grab-and-go" hub during the morning rush or the lunch hour. Furthermore, the surrounding area is a mix of high-end corporate offices and residential buildings, making it a versatile spot that serves different needs throughout the day. While the seating area is often described as having a modern and slightly "sterile" aesthetic—fitting for a corporate landmark lobby—it remains a pleasant and professional environment for a quick sit-down meeting or a solo coffee break. The large open area ensures that even during peak hours, the space feels breathable and organized, a luxury in the densely packed grid of Midtown Manhattan.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Épicerie Boulud at the Lipstick Building, the coffee is an excellent place to start. Frequently praised by locals for its depth and quality, it serves as a reliable anchor for the morning commute. However, to truly experience the bakery’s French roots, one should not overlook the selection of viennoiseries. The croissants are a standout choice, characterized by their buttery, flaky layers that transport the palate straight to a Parisian café. For those visiting during the lunch hour, the selection of prepared sandwiches on house-made baguettes is highly recommended, as they utilize the same high-quality ingredients found in Boulud's more formal restaurants.
Another highlight worth choosing is the seasonal pastry selection. Whether it is a fruit tart or a delicately balanced macaron, these items showcase the technical precision of the pastry team. If you are a resident of the New York region looking to elevate a home meal, the artisanal bread—particularly the traditional baguette—is a staple that outperforms most standard grocery offerings. Finally, for those who appreciate the convenience of the location, the gourmet take-out options like their chilled salads or soups offer a healthy and sophisticated alternative to typical fast-food fare. Regardless of what you pick, the combination of the sleek, modern environment and the classic French flavors makes every visit feel like a small, luxurious treat in the middle of a busy New York day.

I have passed by the Lipstick building a hundred times over the years and watched as this new coffee/food spot was developed in the vast lobby area. Last week I decided to try it out and stopped in for a coffee. Nice clean and quiet space with a steady stream of customers, most for take out. The coffee was very good. The seating area is a little sterile for me but still pleasant.
