Ole & Steen Introduce
In the bustling heart of Midtown East, where the pace of New York City rarely slows, Ole & Steen stands as a serene outpost of Danish culinary tradition. Known in its homeland of Denmark as Lagkagehuset, this bakery has successfully translated the concept of "hygge"—a Danish word for a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality—into the vertical landscape of Manhattan. For local New Yorkers, Ole & Steen at 518 Lexington Ave is more than just a place to grab a morning caffeine fix; it is a sophisticated sanctuary where artisanal craftsmanship meets the high-energy demands of the city. The bakery is celebrated for its commitment to long-fermentation processes and high-quality ingredients, offering a menu that is both deeply rooted in Nordic heritage and perfectly adapted for the modern metropolitan palate.
The essence of the experience at this Lexington Avenue location is defined by the contrast between the sleek, minimalist Scandinavian design and the warm, inviting aromas of fresh cinnamon, cardamom, and toasted rye. For residents and professionals in the New York region, the bakery provides a reliable anchor for daily rituals, whether that involves a quick takeaway for a commuter heading into Grand Central or a leisurely meeting over open-faced sandwiches. In a city where bakeries are a dime a dozen, Ole & Steen distinguishes itself through a specific aesthetic and a rigorous standard of baking that ensures every loaf and pastry feels like a handcrafted labor of love.
Location and Accessibility
Ideally situated at 518 Lexington Ave, New York, NY 10017, USA, Ole & Steen enjoys a premier location at the corner of East 48th Street. This placement is particularly advantageous for Midtown East residents and the vast workforce that populates the surrounding office towers. The bakery is a mere block away from the iconic Grand Central Terminal, making it an exceptionally accessible destination for those commuting via the 4, 5, 6, 7, and S subway lines, as well as the Metro-North Railroad. For New Yorkers, the ability to step out of the city's largest transit hub and find world-class Danish pastries within a three-minute walk is a luxury that integrates seamlessly into a busy schedule.
The accessibility factor is further enhanced by its proximity to several major Midtown hotels and landmarks, such as the Waldorf Astoria and the Chrysler Building. For those navigating the city by foot, the wide sidewalks of Lexington Avenue provide a straightforward path to the bakery's welcoming glass facade. Inside, the space is designed to be efficient for the "grab-and-go" crowd while offering enough clean, modern seating for those who wish to linger. What is worth choosing
Navigating the glass display cases at Ole & Steen can be a sensory delight, but for the definitive experience, there are a few items that are absolutely worth choosing. The "Cinnamon Social" is the undisputed king of the menu; this long, braided pastry is filled with rich vanilla custard and cinnamon paste, topped with white icing. For a single serving, the Cinnamon Social slice provides a soft, doughy texture that is almost donut-like, making it a perfect accompaniment to a morning coffee. If you prefer something with a bit more of a traditional Danish profile, the Copenhagener—a poppy seed-covered pastry filled with almond paste—offers a sophisticated balance of sweetness and crunch.
For those seeking savory options, the Danish "Toasties" are highly recommended. These are served warm on house-made focaccia or rye, with the Ham & Cheese Toastie being a particular favorite among the lunch crowd. The bread selection is also worth exploring, specifically the Carrot Rye, which offers a moist, seedy crumb that is perfect for building your own smørrebrød at home. While prices at this Midtown location are on the higher end of the scale, the quality of the ingredients—from the almond paste to the lemongrass tea—justifies the cost for those looking for a premium experience. Whether you choose a classic cardamom bun or a robust sourdough roll with Havarti cheese, a visit to Ole & Steen ensures you are getting an authentic taste of Denmark right on Lexington Avenue.

This establishment was right across from our recent hotel stay in midtown NYC. Wonderful selection of sweet and savory pastries, sandwiches, fresh breads, and hot beverages. There are various locations throughout the city. I chose a poppy seed covered pastry with almond paste and a lemongrass hot tea. Both were excellent. However, service was quite slow and server not so friendly. Visited the next day with family and service was quick and friendly, and the coffee excellent. Prices on the higher end, but clean place with some delicious offeri as to eat in or take out. Restroom for customers and a cde is needed to punch in.

Good location. Staff not super-friendly, not mean. Just doing their jobs. Drip coffee - good flavor, but not hot enough. Oat meal - overpriced, extra charges for add-ons ($10+ for nothing special) Cinnamon swirl - Very good flavor. But just a little hard. My daughter liked it.

Sunday afternoon. The pastries were whet you could expect on a weekend. The place was rough and shabby, understaffed I suppose. Could do with a good cleanup. Enjoyed my Danish vanilla though with a black kaffe.

Our favorite place near Grand Central to have great coffee and delicious sandwiches Today we had house special hot chocolate and a turkey press sandwich. All great. Back again today as we were in the area. Today just had the regular hot chocolate. It was great and really hit the spot on a cold blustery day. Can’t wait to come again. They have a nice bathroom setup. Two bathrooms w/o sinks and a sink area outside. Works very well. Stopped in for late lunch today. Place was pretty busy so we had to wait a few minutes to get a table. Today we ordered tuna salad sandwich and chicken bacon toastie. And a delicious cup of decaf Americano. Everything was delicious.
